Parking in Naples Italy: Costs, Garages and Metro

For a northern arrival, Colli Aminei keeps parking costs low, but for a short walk to Piazza del Plebiscito, choose Maschio Angioino. Morelli suits the Chiaia side, Metropark Napoli Centrale the station area, and Brin an eastern approach if you are comfortable with a longer walk.

Choose where to leave the car before driving into central Naples. A garage space and permission to pass a camera-controlled gate are separate matters, and a cheaper parking stay can mean more walking or metro fares for everyone travelling with you.

Colli Aminei is the lower-cost choice among the calculated parking stays. From the Tangenziale, use the Zona Ospedaliera exit for the northern approach. Add metro tickets per traveller rather than treating them as part of the parking charge. Maschio Angioino costs more but removes the train transfer, which can matter with children, bags or limited walking tolerance.

Metropark charges €3 for the first hour or fraction, then €3.50 per hour or fraction until 23:59 that calendar day. Its comparison figure assumes the whole daytime stay falls within that day. Maschio Angioino charges €3 for the first hour or fraction and €2.50 for each subsequent hour, so the longer-stay figure is an hourly calculation, not a daily package.

Morelli’s online one-day quote varies with the number of bookings. An online day quote is not a walk-in hourly tariff or a rolling 24-hour price. It suits visitors approaching Chiaia who prefer a garage and a walk rather than a metro connection.

Brin involves an active gate: its access arrangement relies on the car park reporting your licence plate to the municipality. Have the plate correctly recorded for that visit. Keeping a road-trip car parked at one site is usually simpler than retrieving it between central sights.

ZTL restrictions and camera gates

A ZTL, or limited-traffic zone, controls vehicle entry, not just parking. A parking destination does not by itself authorise passage through a restricted gate. Centro Antico covers the historic centre around Spaccanapoli and the Decumani, so choose your car park’s approach rather than driving through this area to reach it.

  • Centro Antico, Via del Sole gate: restrictions Monday–Thursday, 09:00–22:00; Friday–Sunday, public holidays and days before public holidays, 09:00–02:00 the following day.
  • Centro Antico, Via Miroballo, Via Duomo and Via Santa Sofia gates: restrictions daily, 09:00–17:00.
  • Mezzocannone: restrictions Monday–Thursday, 09:00–22:00; Friday–Sunday, public holidays and days before public holidays, 09:00–02:00 the following day.
  • Piazza del Gesù: authorised vehicles only, every day, 24 hours a day, year-round.

Mezzocannone’s permit categories include hotel, garage and repair-shop customers, and non-residents with an off-street parking space. Taxis and chauffeur-driven hire cars also have recognised exceptions. If your hotel or garage lies within Mezzocannone, arrange approved vehicle access before entering. A temporary-permit application is not permission: approval is not automatic, and applications require identification, vehicle-registration documents and supporting evidence.

Temporary applications can cover documented needs such as loading, removals or clinical visits for someone with temporary mobility difficulties. Motorcycles and mopeds may pass Centro Antico gates, but require authorisation in Mezzocannone and Piazza del Gesù.

From Colli Aminei car park to its station, allow about 2 minutes on foot over about 150 metres. The transit and car-park walking legs have the same rounded times in reverse.

Brin, Maschio Angioino and Morelli on foot

If you prefer to reach Piazza del Plebiscito without the metro transfer, Maschio Angioino offers the shortest walk of these options. The car park on Via Vittorio Emanuele III is beside Castel Nuovo. From there to the square, the walk is about 650 metres and about 9 minutes. It is a useful choice when the onward walk matters more than the parking saving.

Brin, on Via Alessandro Volta on the eastern edge, involves a walk of about 3.5 km, taking about three quarters of an hour to Piazza del Plebiscito. Treat that as part of your sightseeing day, not merely a connection before it. With luggage or children, the walk back after visiting the centre may be the deciding drawback.

Morelli gives you a Chiaia-side starting point on Via Domenico Morelli. Its walk to the square is about 1.1 km and takes about 16 minutes, a middle choice between Maschio Angioino’s close approach and Brin’s longer walk. Choose Morelli when your plans also take you towards Chiaia and the seafront, rather than solely for reaching the square.

Street parking and lower-cost options

Free parking in Naples is a street-by-street search, not a guaranteed central option. The individual bay’s sign determines whether you may use it, including any time limits or local restrictions.

Using street bays

Do

  • Use free white bays only where the sign allows your vehicle and intended stay.
  • Pay the posted charge in eligible blue bays using a meter or an authorised app.
  • With a meter ticket, display it as instructed; with an app, enter the correct plate and parking location.

Don’t

  • Use yellow reserved bays without the required entitlement.
  • Treat paint colour alone as permission to park.
  • Treat payment to an unofficial attendant as municipal payment or legal permission.

On Via Caracciolo and Riviera di Chiaia, you can pay with coins at a meter or through the ANM Tap&Park and ANM GO apps. Authorised third-party alternatives include EasyPark, MyCicero and Telepass. Choose a channel you can use reliably, and make sure the payment covers the bay where you actually leave the car.

Possible peripheral search districts include Fuorigrotta, Arenella, upper Vomero, Ponticelli, Barra and Soccavo. These are areas in which to look for eligible white bays, not designated free car parks. A free space can mean a longer onward journey and time spent searching. Colli Aminei’s organised parking is an alternative if your priority is a predictable place to start the metro journey.

Keep valuables out of sight and take the documents and belongings you need before leaving the car, as returning to a peripheral bay interrupts the city visit.

Overnight parking

For an overnight city stay, leaving the car at one site avoids repeated parking searches and transfers. Colli Aminei is open 24 hours on weekdays and public holidays, while Morelli is open 24 hours every day. This makes overnight storage and late retrieval possible, though a metro-connected car park still requires a way back after your evening out.

Morelli offers online booking. Colli Aminei’s calculated longer-stay charge in the comparison suits a car you intend to leave parked, while Morelli’s online quote varies with bookings. Choose the parking arrangement for your whole stay, including how you will collect the car when you leave Naples.

A hotel garage can simplify unloading and collecting luggage, but ask the accommodation to arrange any required vehicle permission before driving to it. A garage reservation and approved restricted-zone access remain separate. Compare the parking charge with leaving your car elsewhere, and keep the Naples tourist tax separate from both: it belongs to the accommodation bill, not parking.

Is a car worth bringing?

Hiring a car solely to visit central Naples is usually not worthwhile. Retaining one for a wider road trip is a different decision: you can leave it parked during the city stay and collect it when you continue beyond Naples.

Bringing a car for a Naples visit

Pros

  • Useful for continuing a wider road trip beyond the city.
  • Lets you carry luggage and family belongings to a chosen garage.
  • Can make arrivals and departures easier when your accommodation has suitable vehicle access.

Cons

  • Central parking adds a charge while the car sits unused.
  • Peripheral parking adds walking or metro transfers and fares.
  • Restricted gates complicate driving to accommodation and between central sights.

With children or heavy bags, Maschio Angioino’s shorter onward walk may matter more than the parking saving at Colli Aminei. Morelli can fit a stay on the Chiaia side. For limited mobility, choose around the actual distance you can manage and your accommodation’s access arrangements, as a metro connection still includes walking at both ends.

Keep the car parked throughout the central visit rather than moving it between sights. Choose central parking to reduce the walk, or Colli Aminei for a northern arrival when you are happy to use Line 1. If you no longer need the road-trip car, returning it before your city stay removes the storage decision.
