Five days in Vienna: palaces, art and wine taverns

Vienna rewards separating its imperial rooms from its great art collections. Give the Hofburg, Schönbrunn, Bruegel and Klimt different mornings, then leave a final day for Kahlenberg and the wine taverns of Grinzing. Starting near Karlsplatz, these five full days keep lunch, accommodation breaks and neighbourhood dinners alongside sightseeing.

The Hofburg’s apartments, Graben’s Plague Column and St Stephen’s Gothic stonework make a rich central walk, easing into Judenplatz’s old lanes and Spittelberg dinner. The walking legs cover about 7.4 km.

The Hofburg ticket normally combines Elisabeth’s personal objects and portraits with her and Franz Joseph’s private and state rooms. During refurbishment, focus on the furnished apartments.

Heldenplatz frames the monumental Neue Burg. Burggarten’s morning placement keeps this garden visit within its seasonal gates. On Graben, look for the Baroque fountain as well as the Plague Column and historic façades.

  • Burggarten in March: 07:00–19:00.
  • April–October: 06:00–22:00.
  • November–February: 07:00–17:30.

At St Stephen’s, seek the stone pulpit and Frederick III’s tomb. Church entry is free, with some areas ticketed, but sightseeing in the service area is not permitted during worship. St Peter’s adds gilding and dome frescoes. State Hall ordinary online tickets remain valid indefinitely during opening hours, while reduced tickets are sold only on site with proof of eligibility.

Try a Melange, coffee with steamed milk, and apple strudel. Allow roughly €10–18 for seated coffee and cake, more in grand central cafés. Lunch usually falls around 11:30–14:30 and dinner around 18:00–22:00.

The Palace Ticket includes the Great Gallery, Hall of Ceremonies and Franz Joseph and Elisabeth’s private apartments. This is a selective look at those rooms, not the full circuit, whose official duration is approximately 75 minutes.

The main park is free, but separately ticketed attractions are extra. Morning light suits the Gloriette’s palace views. Wear walking shoes for its uphill paths and steps. Carry water and shorten the exposed garden walk in heat or heavy rain.

  • Schönbrunn park gates open daily at 06:30.
  • Closing: November–February 17:30; March and October 19:00; April and August–September 20:00; May–July 21:00.
  • Last entry is about 30 minutes before closing.

Hietzinger Kai lies beyond the palace’s immediate surroundings, so lunch involves a substantial walk. Afterwards U4 brings you back towards Haus der Musik, where ordinary entry generally needs no advance reservation. The Virtual Conductor lets you lead the Vienna Philharmonic, while the Sonosphere explores how sound is perceived.

Karlskirche’s frescoed cupola provides the optional architectural contrast before the openly accessible Resselpark. After your accommodation break, Stadtpark gives the evening a green pause. Naschmarkt’s restaurants offer sit-down dining beyond the daytime market shopping.

After Schönbrunn and music, Bruegel’s painted worlds at the Kunsthistorisches Museum lead into the MuseumsQuartier courtyards and Spittelberg’s cobbled lanes, with a lighter afternoon and dinner around Neubaugasse. Set off again from Karlsplatz for the museum quarter.

Prioritise Bruegel’s The Tower of Babel and Hunters in the Snow in the Picture Gallery. Their architecture and seasonal landscape reward looking closely rather than racing through every gallery. Add the grand staircase or the Kunstkammer, the chamber of art and curiosities, with Cellini’s Saliera, a sculptural salt cellar. Ordinary admission needs no time slot.

Maria-Theresien-Platz’s monument shows the empress surrounded by figures from her court and government. Across from it, the MuseumsQuartier offers freely accessible courtyards, passageways and seating around the clock, without museum admission. Spittelberg’s Biedermeier houses give the optional lane walk its character. At Rathausplatz, look up at the Town Hall’s pointed arches, towers and crowning Rathausmann figure. Continue through public Rathauspark. Events can restrict access to the square or require security checks.

Give Klimt’s The Kiss and Judith the morning’s attention, then select works by Schiele and Kokoschka rather than trying to cover every period. Your ticket is for Upper Belvedere, not all the collections and buildings bearing the Belvedere name.

Morning light is useful for the gardens’ palace views. Shorten these exposed terraces in rain or strong heat.

  • Belvedere garden gates open at 07:00 in March and November–February, and 06:30 April–October.
  • Closing: March and October 19:00; April and September 20:00; May–August 21:00; November–February 17:30.

Schwarzenbergplatz adds the High Jet Fountain before Wieden lunch. Tram 1 carries the afternoon detour towards Hundertwasserhaus, where colourful uneven forms, trees and an onion-shaped cupola reward an exterior look. Continue to the Prater’s Jesuitenwiese, publicly accessible in every season and at any time.

After your accommodation break, follow the Danube Canal near Schwedenplatz. Keep this waterside pause shorter in winter cold or fading daylight. Rochusmarkt’s surrounding restaurants still offer dinner after the market stalls close.

After Belvedere and the Prater, Kahlenberg’s panorama, Nussdorf’s winegrowers’ houses and Beethovengang’s leafy path make an outward-looking final day, ending with wine-tavern dinner in Grinzing. Start again from Karlsplatz for the hill.

Take U4 to Heiligenstadt, then bus 38A to Kahlenberg. The two travel legs take about 44 minutes. Weekday daytime buses generally depart every 10 minutes, varying by season and day. Your Vienna urban transport ticket covers the journey.

The public viewpoint is free. Choose a clear morning for Vienna, the Danube and the Vienna Basin, with the distant Carpathians sometimes visible. St Joseph’s Church adds an optional look at its ornate Baroque high altar.

Descend by bus for Nussdorf lunch, then walk past old winegrowers’ houses and courtyards around Greinergasse. Beethovengang adds a leafy stroll and a monument to the composer’s association with the area. The Beethoven Museum in Probusgasse develops that connection, and ordinary admission needs no reservation.

After your accommodation break, Himmelstraße provides the evening stroll before dinner in Grinzing. A Heuriger is a wine tavern: expect local wine with cold meats, cheese and bread, often alongside hot dishes. Allow roughly €20–35 per person for food and wine, depending on portions and whether you choose a buffet or table service.

Google Street View, 2026-07.

Poor visibility favours neighbourhood time over lingering at the viewpoint, or more time with the art collections on the earlier days.

Late starts and shorter stays

  • Four full days: omit Kahlenberg and Grinzing rather than compressing both palaces and both art collections.
  • Three full days: retain the Hofburg/old-town and Schönbrunn days, and choose Bruegel at the Kunsthistorisches Museum or Klimt at Upper Belvedere for the third.
  • Late start: protect timed palace and collection entries, and cut optional churches, hill climbs, monuments and exterior detours first.
  • Rain, heat or short daylight: shorten gardens, courtyard walks, Prater and canal pauses while retaining indoor visits and meals.

An arrival afternoon or departure morning is a partial day, not another full sightseeing day. Move an unreserved MuseumsQuartier courtyard visit or Spittelberg walk into it, rather than squeezing in a palace entry. If your stay is shorter from the outset, three days in Vienna offers a separately paced route with fewer daily commitments.
