Austin Clubs: Pick Your Music and Dance Floor

Austin’s dance floors offer very different nights: Barbarella’s mixed DJ parties, Mala Fama’s Latin clubbing, Elysium’s alternative sounds, Cheer Up Charlies’ queer-oriented events and The White Horse’s country partner dancing. Choose by the music you want to dance to, rather than treating every Sixth Street venue as the same kind of club.

The best choice is the floor that matches your music and crowd. Austin has both DJ clubs and partner-dancing bars. Dirty Sixth means East Sixth Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35. Red River runs north from that strip, while East Austin’s Sixth Street venues lie beyond the interstate.

Admission estimates allow for ordinary nights, with ticketed parties, guest DJs or special shows pushing costs higher. Typically budget $5–$8 for a beer or $10–$16 for a mixed drink, with premium spirits costing more. Dance floors generally build later in the evening, and arriving before the main rush gives you time to settle in. Line-ups change from night to night.

You must be 21 to purchase alcohol in Texas, even where younger guests can enter. For film, comedy or a night without a dance floor, Austin evening activities beyond bars offers a different set of choices.

Barbarella

Barbarella suits dancers who want a mixed crowd and music beyond top-40 hits. Its wider mix takes in soul, hip-hop and electronic sounds. Friday focuses on 1980s music, and Saturday brings New Noise. Tuezgayz, the Tuesday dance party, draws local regulars and a typically college-aged crowd.

Mala Fama

Mala Fama is the Latin-club choice, with reggaeton, perreo (a close-bodied style of reggaeton dancing), hip-hop and live banda, Mexican brass-band music. Its multi-floor setting suits a party crowd looking for Latin clubbing rather than Red River’s alternative scene.

It sits on Dirty Sixth itself. From Congress Avenue and Sixth Street, head east along Sixth, staying on the downtown side of Interstate 35.

Elysium

Elysium is the choice for goth and alternative dancing, with industrial, synth-pop, new wave, post-punk and indie-dance fans forming its core audience. Its dark dance identity differs from mainstream pop or Latin clubbing, though drag tributes and burlesque also have a place in its programme. It welcomes people of all lifestyles.

On Red River near Seventh Street, it is north of Barbarella. From Congress Avenue at Sixth Street, head east and turn north on Red River.

Bring cash for the door, where cover depends on the event. Regular nights work around door admission rather than a requirement to buy advance tickets.

Cheer Up Charlies

Cheer Up Charlies suits a queer-oriented DJ night rather than a fixed nightly soundtrack. The venue describes itself as “Vegan+Queer”, and its LGBTQ+-friendly crowd mixes locals and visitors. DJs, drag and themed dance parties share the programme with live performances, so a DJ-led event is the choice when dancing is your priority.

It sits on Red River near Ninth Street, farther north than Elysium. From Congress Avenue and Sixth Street, head east to Red River and continue north towards Ninth.

The White Horse

The White Horse is for country partner dancing, not a DJ-club night. This honky-tonk, a country-music dance bar, draws local and visiting country, roots-music and two-stepping fans. Country and western sits alongside honky-tonk and conjunto/Tejano, the accordion-led and broader Texan-Mexican musical traditions.

On Comal Street in East Austin, it lies beyond Interstate 35. From Congress Avenue and Sixth Street, continue east across the interstate towards Comal rather than turning north into Red River.

The bar opens daily. Its FAQ gives a 6pm opening, while its Visit listing gives the earlier opening shown above. You do not need advance tickets, and reservations are not taken. Thursday–Sunday dance lessons offer a way into partner dancing if you are new to the floor.

  • 483 Night Owl Riverside: towards Riverside.
  • 484 Night Owl South Lamar: towards South Lamar.
  • 485 Night Owl 7th Street/Cameron: towards Seventh Street and Cameron.
  • 486 Night Owl South Congress: towards South Congress.

Choose a Night Owl bus by the corridor towards your accommodation, whether you finish downtown or on East Sixth. Services run year-round on Monday–Saturday nights, midnight–3am, every 20–30 minutes depending on the route. During downtown construction, all Night Owl routes terminate at Lavaca and Sixth Street. Use that junction as your downtown departure reference rather than assuming you can board beside the club.

Take a taxi or ride-hailing car if the bus corridors do not fit your destination. Move away from the busiest club entrances to a well-lit pickup point where a driver can stop safely, and confirm the meeting place before requesting the car. Stay with your group while waiting and match the vehicle and driver details before getting in.
