Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is the closest airport to central Austin for scheduled commercial passenger flights. It is the straightforward choice for an Austin visit, with a short road transfer and a direct downtown bus connection.
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is a realistic alternative when its airfare or flight itinerary makes the longer ground journey worthwhile. Compare the flight and the transfer together, especially if you are arriving late, travelling with several bags or hiring a car.
Austin–Bergstrom or San Antonio?
| Criterion | Austin–Bergstrom (AUS) | San Antonio (SAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Driving time | about 20 minutesBest | about an hour and a quarter |
| Driving distance | about 11 milesBest | about 74 miles |
| Changes on a direct road transfer | None | None |
| Estimated one-way taxi or app-based ride, per vehicle | US$30–60Best | US$150–250 |
Choose AUS unless the flight advantage at SAT outweighs the extra ground journey and expense. San Antonio handles scheduled commercial passenger flights, so it is worth comparing actual itineraries rather than choosing solely by the airfare. A cheaper ticket can lose its advantage once you add the ride into Austin, and an earlier landing does not necessarily mean an earlier arrival at your hotel.
The road comparison ends at Austin City Hall, a downtown landmark at 301 West 2nd Street. The AUS journey starts at the Barbara Jordan Terminal. Arrival formalities, vehicle collection, pickup waits and traffic delays add to these driving times, while your accommodation may require a further journey.
The ride estimates depend on demand, vehicle size and luggage. Busy periods or a larger vehicle can push the price higher. Compare the full vehicle cost for your party, not that cost against a single passenger’s flight saving.
Car hire is available at both airports. At AUS, use the Rental Car Facility. At SAT, the Consolidated Car Rental Facility is reached from Terminal B via the mezzanine and Sky Bridge. Rental charges are separate from fuel, and downtown parking adds another consideration if you only need the car for the airport journey.
For public transport from AUS, CapMetro Route 20 runs directly to downtown Austin in about 35 minutes, boarding on the lower level outside baggage claim. The AUS arrival connections explain bus boarding, payment and car connections to Republic Square, rather than the City Hall endpoint used above.
Airlines and international flights
Major airlines serving Austin–Bergstrom include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, alongside Alaska Airlines, JetBlue Airways and other scheduled carriers. International airlines include British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Aeromexico and Copa Airlines.
The June 2026 international nonstop listing includes London Heathrow, Amsterdam and Frankfurt in Europe, plus Toronto, Mexico City, Cancún and Panama City in the Americas. These give you several ways to reach Austin without first flying through another US airport, depending on where you depart.
Compare a connecting flight into AUS with the complete journey through SAT. A connection can still be preferable if it leaves you close to your Austin destination, while a convenient nonstop into San Antonio may justify the longer road transfer. Weigh the connection length, landing time and ground cost together. If you will return through the same airport, include the outbound transfer in that decision too.
Barbara Jordan Terminal and the South Terminal
The Barbara Jordan Terminal is the building name to use for your Austin–Bergstrom arrival. Its official address is 3600 Presidential Blvd, Austin, TX 78719. Use the named terminal as the destination when arranging a lift or setting driving directions, so the person meeting you is heading to the passenger building rather than another airport facility.
A terminal name identifies a building, while an airport booking code identifies the airport. Use the code in flight searches and the terminal name for your ground journey. Older travel notes may refer to the separate South Terminal, but that name is not an alternative airport to compare when buying a ticket.
Killeen Regional and Austin Executive
Austin Executive Airport is a general aviation airport, not a scheduled-airline arrival option. Its Austin name can make it stand out in airport searches, but it is not interchangeable with Austin–Bergstrom when you are choosing a regular airline ticket.
Killeen Regional Airport uses the booking code GRK. It does handle scheduled passenger flights, with American Airlines connecting it to Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport. This makes it a possible itinerary to consider if that connection suits your departure airport, rather than a substitute chosen simply because it appears in a nearby-airport list.
Car hire is available at Killeen Regional, with Enterprise, National and Alamo operating there. If you are considering a GRK itinerary for an Austin visit, weigh the onward drive and rental cost alongside the flight. Geographic proximity alone does not make an airport convenient: the useful choice is the one whose flights and ground journey fit your destination. For a straightforward Austin arrival, favour Austin–Bergstrom, with San Antonio as the principal alternative to compare.
