4 Beaches Near St Augustine for a Day by the Sea

St Augustine’s Atlantic beaches offer different reasons to leave the historic centre: beach-town facilities at St Augustine Beach, shell-fragment sand at Vilano, a broad walking shore at Crescent Beach and shark-tooth hunting at Mickler’s Landing. Choose for what you want to do on the sand, not just the shortest drive. All four face Atlantic surf, so a beachcombing day and a swimming day need not lead you to the same shore.

Vilano is closest by road distance, but the Ocean Pier access has the shortest driving time. Vilano’s outward journey is about 3.6 miles, against about 4.6 miles to the pier. Choose St Augustine Beach over Vilano for facilities, and Vilano for beachcombing.

For the prettiest setting, choose Crescent if you like a wide, quieter shore, or Mickler’s Landing if dunes and shell-rich sand appeal more. Its longer return trip rewards a picnic rather than a quick dip. For gardens, towns and historic sights instead, consider day trips from St Augustine by car.

From the historic centre, the southern approach leads to St Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach. The northern approach reaches Vilano, then Mickler’s Landing at Ponte Vedra Beach. Use off-beach parking and walk onto the sand, rather than treating a vehicle ramp as ordinary beach entry.

The STAR Circulator gives you a car-free option for St Augustine Beach. Its operating window helps you plan a beach outing with a meal before returning downtown.

A single red flag means high hazard. Choose a staffed area and keep children close in Atlantic surf. If caught in a rip current, float, signal for help and swim parallel to shore when able, rather than fighting directly towards land. Leave the beach for a substantial building or enclosed vehicle when thunder sounds. Seasonal lifeguard service does not mean every access has a staffed tower throughout that season.

St. Augustine Beach

St Augustine Beach is the facilities choice, with a broad sandy shore around St Johns County Ocean Pier & Courts Park and restaurants, a playground and public amenities nearby. You can spend a half-day on the beach or stay for a meal and make it a full day. The water entry faces open Atlantic waves, rather than a sheltered paddling bay.

Use the park for pedestrian access and off-beach parking, both free. A Street is a separate public access further south along the same beach, useful if you prefer to start away from the pier area.

Choose where to enter the sea according to surf conditions, warning flags and the pier restriction.

Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach favours beachcombing over gentle family paddling. Its coquina sand (sand containing shell fragments) and steep water entry distinguish it from the broader southern shores. Heavier surf makes a walk along the Atlantic edge a better focus than assuming children can stand safely near shore.

Use Anahma Drive for the main Atlantic-side access, with nearby dining for a half-day outing or a longer beach day. Pedestrian entry is free. Surfside offers another walkover. Porpoise Point is an inlet-side landmark for watching the water or fishing, and strong inlet currents make it a different prospect from the ocean swimming shore.

The vehicle pass is for driving onto the sand, not walking onto the beach or using the off-beach lot. Park off the beach if you simply want to walk and look for shells.

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach’s wide, hard-packed sand suits walking and beach games. This quieter shore gives you room to make the sand, rather than nearby restaurants, the focus of your outing. Swimming is an option when Atlantic surf allows, but the open-ocean water entry is not a guaranteed shallow paddling area.

Approach Crescent Beachfront Park along A1A South and use the pedestrian access from the off-beach lot. Both admission and parking are free. Showers and toilets make it easier to spend time on the shore, while picnic pavilions give you a reason to bring lunch. A half-day by car works well, or stay for a full beach day with a picnic.

The vehicle ramp is a separate, condition-dependent way onto the sand. Use the park’s walking access for a straightforward beach visit, rather than making your day depend on driving along the shore.

Ponte Vedra Beach at Mickler’s Landing

Mickler’s Landing is worth the northern trip for shark-tooth hunting and dune scenery. This public access at Ponte Vedra Beach leads over a dune walkway to shell-rich coquina sand. Look among shells and darker fragments along the shore, and treat finding a tooth as a possibility rather than the measure of a successful outing.

Follow A1A north towards Ponte Vedra Beach for Mickler’s Landing Beachfront Park. Pedestrian access is free, and the park opens daily from dawn to dusk. Allow a fuller day for beachcombing and a picnic, so the longer drive leaves you time to enjoy the shore.

The exposed Atlantic water entry makes swimming dependent on conditions. If the surf is unsuitable, keep the day centred on the sand and use the dune walkway rather than cutting across the dunes.
