Bike Hire in Lucca: Prices and City-Wall Rules

Hiring a bicycle in Lucca gives you a leisurely way to enjoy the elevated promenade on its Renaissance walls. You can collect a shop bike for an outing or use Lime for a short journey where the app offers a bicycle. Choose your vehicle around who will ride it and how often you want to stop, especially with children.

Lucca suits relaxed cycling, while walking is the default for sightseeing in the compact centre. Hire a bike when the ride itself is part of your outing, rather than for repeated stops inside churches or museums.

A conventional city bike suits a short walls ride. Choose electric assistance according to your stamina and confidence, particularly for a longer local ride, but you still need to steer, brake and control the bike. An e-bike assists your pedalling, unlike a standing electric scooter.

Shop hire gives you a bicycle for an outing, while app hire suits a short journey. With luggage or a late transfer, taxi ranks and fares in Lucca offer a more relevant transport alternative.

Ordinary bicycles are permitted on the upper city-wall promenade. Its broad paved surface is mostly level, with gentle rises around some gates rather than sustained steep gradients. Watch for uneven patches and exposed roots near older trees, and take particular care on wet paving or leaves.

From San Colombano on the southern side, head towards San Regolo and then Libertà on the eastern side. San Salvatore leads towards the northern bastions. Santa Croce and San Donato mark the western side, with San Paolino and Santa Maria bringing you south again. Use the bastions as landmarks, leaving room to pause rather than treating the circuit as a speed course.

Where to hire a bike

Choose a hire counter near where you will start and finish, so returning the bicycle does not interrupt the rest of your day. Tourist Center Lucca is convenient if your outing starts from the railway station. It also offers self-directed day e-bike hire: you do not need to join a guided tour or follow a fixed tour route.

Cicli Bizzarri suits a start from Porta Santa Maria on the northern side of the centre. Cicli Rai, on Via San Nicolao, gives you an eastern-side collection point within the walls. For a family outing, let the available bicycle fit and child equipment decide the final choice, rather than location alone.

Riding with children

Choose a child’s own bicycle only if they can steer, brake and stop confidently. Try the fit before leaving, keep children close on the shared promenade, slow around pedestrians and allow plenty of room to stop. A short outing gives you an easy opportunity to turn back before anyone tires.

In Italy, an adult aged 18 or over may carry a child up to 8 years old on an ordinary bicycle, properly secured in a suitable child seat. The seat must be firmly attached to the frame, with armrests and a backrest joined by a bar, restraining straps and leg protection. It must stay within the bicycle’s outline and leave the rider’s view and movement unobstructed.

Four-seat pedal vehicles, locally called risciò, let a family ride together. They are permitted on the walls, subject to the rules for using the promenade. Allow extra room for their width, especially when passing pedestrians, and choose one only if the person steering feels comfortable controlling it.

Helmets are recommended for safety, although Italy’s national rules do not require them for ordinary bicycle riders. Fit them securely before setting off, including for children riding in a seat.

App-based, per-minute bicycle sharing

Shop hire suits an outing with stops. Per-minute billing keeps running while the hire remains active. At a shop, agree the hire period before leaving, especially if you want to pause for a meal or visit a sight.

Typical e-bike prices vary with the model and length of hire. Longer hire periods may reduce the hourly equivalent. Pedal-vehicle prices depend on capacity and duration.

Collecting and returning your bike

Before accepting a shop bike, make sure you can reach the brakes and stop comfortably. Agree which lock and child equipment come with it, where to return it and the return deadline.

Do

  • Test the brakes and adjust the saddle before leaving.
  • Lock a shop bike whenever you leave it unattended.
  • Agree the shop’s return arrangements before setting off.
  • Park a Lime bicycle in a permitted location without blocking access.

Don’t

  • Accept a bicycle or child seat that does not fit.
  • Leave a shop bike elsewhere without agreement.
  • Treat parking a Lime bicycle as ending its hire.

For a Lime bicycle offered in the app, download the Lime app and create an account with a phone number, email, Google or Apple sign-in. Add a credit or debit card, PayPal or Apple Pay. Find a bicycle on the app map. You can reserve it for 10 minutes. At the bicycle, tap “Start ride”, or use “Scan to start” and scan its QR code.

Lime’s standard minimum age is 18. Younger riders are permitted only where local app rules allow them: they must meet that local minimum, be at least 14 and have parental or guardian consent if under adulthood.

Inside the walls, return Lime bicycles only to the app’s virtual stations. Outside the walls, use a valid parking location in the permitted free-floating area.
