Budapest Itinerary: One, Two or Three Days

Budapest’s Parliament, Castle Hill viewpoints and Széchenyi Thermal Bath make three distinct sightseeing days. Stay around Deák Ferenc Square in central Pest and you can give each its own outing, with lunch, a return to your accommodation and an evening outside before dinner.

How many days do you need?

Three full sightseeing days are a good first-visit choice. You can explore Parliament and central Pest, spend a separate day among Castle Hill’s churches and terraces, then enjoy the thermal pools without squeezing bathing between monuments.

Two days retain the Pest and Castle Hill outings. If bathing matters more than the hilltop viewpoints, substitute the bath day for Castle Hill. One day is best spent following the Pest route rather than repeatedly crossing between the three clusters.

Count usable days, not nights booked. An evening arrival and morning departure can leave a three-night stay with only two full days. Parliament needs a reserved tour, while a substantial Széchenyi visit takes most of a morning, so neither makes a comfortable last-minute addition to a departure day.

Deák Ferenc Square connects metro lines M1, M2 and M3. Bus 16 serves Castle Hill, and M1 runs towards City Park. Late-night venues cluster around Kazinczy Street and nearby Jewish Quarter streets: choose a room away from evening venues if quiet matters. Compare where to stay in Budapest for the differences between central Pest, the Opera area, the Jewish Quarter and the Castle District.

For Parliament, choose a date and available English tour through Jegymester, the official online sales channel. Email reservations are not accepted. Bring a printed entry ticket. Matthias Church interior tickets need no timed reservation and remain usable within their calendar year, regardless of the selected date, but they are non-refundable.

Széchenyi needs no reservation, but advance online tickets have priority when the bath is full. Online and on-site prices are identical, with no mandatory booking charge. The BKK travelcard covers unlimited trips on its included services, but not the 100E Airport Express.

Budapest Card includes city travel on BKK buses, trolleybuses, trams and metro. Parliament still needs its separate ticket. The card gives 20% off the Basilica and 10% off Dohány Street Synagogue, rather than free entry. Only the 72-hour PLUS product includes Matthias Church admission. Standard cards do not.

The card’s Széchenyi benefit is 20% off a standard daily locker ticket bought on site, not Fast Track or other products. That saving means foregoing the priority of an advance online ticket. A discount still requires buying admission, whereas an included entry does not.

Parliament, St Stephen’s Basilica and Great Market Hall give this day architectural variety, before a riverfront pause and Ráday Street dinner. From Deák Ferenc Square, it is a long walking day: wear comfortable footwear and keep the accommodation break.

Parliament’s guided visit takes you inside the landmark visible from Buda tomorrow. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your reserved tour for ticket procedures and security. The guided visit itself takes about 45 minutes.

The Shoes on the Danube Bank commemorate Jewish victims shot into the river by Arrow Cross members during the Second World War. Pause quietly at the memorial.

Liberty Square’s former Stock Exchange façade earns the optional architectural detour. Skip it first to protect the Basilica visit.

St Stephen’s Basilica holds the Holy Right, St Stephen’s mummified right hand. Look up into the dome, then enjoy the terrace’s city view in clear daylight. Use lifts or climb 304 steps. Worship takes precedence over sightseeing, so services may change admission.

Around Hold Street, try gulyás, Hungary’s paprika-seasoned beef soup, usually with potatoes and vegetables.

Great Market Hall combines fresh-food stalls with a vast exposed iron roof. Browse produce, meat and Hungarian spices, then try lángos, fried bread commonly topped with sour cream and cheese.

Liberty Bridge’s Pest end looks towards Gellért Hill and upstream to Buda Castle. Károlyi Garden offers an enclosed garden with trees, lawns and paths. Leave these optional outdoor stops first in heat or rain.

After resting, Vigadó Square’s riverfront frames Buda Castle and the Matthias Church–Fisherman’s Bastion area, and late-day light suits the scene. Continue to Ráday Street’s restaurants, cafés and bars for dinner.

Matthias Church’s painted vaults, Fisherman’s Bastion’s Parliament view and Buda Castle’s courtyards make a hilltop day, followed by Margaret Island and Pozsonyi Road dinner. After yesterday’s Pest outing, return to Deák Ferenc Square for bus 16 to Trinity Square.

Matthias Church rewards an interior visit with geometric and floral painting across its walls and vaults. Outside, its patterned roof uses glazed ceramic tiles. Religious services take priority, so follow entrance notices if sightseeing admission changes.

Fisherman’s Bastion gives you the Parliament view across the Danube, especially clear in morning light. The lower terraces are free and open day and night, while the upper areas have separate ticketed periods, so you need not buy admission for this stop.

Tóth Árpád Promenade adds an optional walk with views over the Danube and Pest before lunch. Fortuna Street’s cafés and restaurants serve Hungarian and international dishes.

Buda Castle’s Lion Courtyard has a gateway guarded by four stone lions. It and Hunyadi Courtyard are public areas, ordinarily open day and night without museum admission.

Castle Garden Bazaar’s neo-Renaissance terraces add an optional garden visit before returning to your accommodation. In heat, rain or short winter daylight, cut the promenade or garden before the church and main viewpoint.

Margaret Island’s southern parkland offers lawns and paths for an evening pause. The onward walk from Castle Garden Bazaar is substantial: preserve the accommodation rest. Enjoy the greenery before continuing to Pozsonyi Road for dinner.

Széchenyi’s pools, Heroes’ Square and Dohány Street Synagogue pair a leisurely bath morning with Jewish heritage, before a garden pause and Kazinczy Street dinner. After Castle Hill, start again from Deák Ferenc Square: trolleybus 72 serves the bath approach, and M1 to Széchenyi fürdő is an alternative.

Széchenyi deserves time to enjoy its pools. Pack swimming-specific swimwear and a towel. Slippers are compulsory around the bath, but must come off before entering pools. A swimming cap is required only for the lap pool.

Vajdahunyad Castle’s optional exterior stop features the seated Anonymous chronicler with his pen. Heroes’ Square centres on the Millennium Monument. From there, take M1 to Oktogon for lunch around Hunyadi Square.

Dohány Street Synagogue’s Moorish Revival prayer hall and Tree of Life memorial, a weeping willow bearing Holocaust victims’ names, anchor the afternoon. The wider visit includes the museum, Heroes’ Temple, cemetery and memorial park. Change out of bath clothes: cover shoulders and knees, avoid low necklines, and men must cover their heads.

Andrássy Avenue’s Opera House has a neo-Renaissance façade with composer statues and entrance sphinxes. Liszt Ferenc Square adds an optional tree-lined garden and benches. In rain or short winter daylight, leave this stop and Vajdahunyad Castle first, preserving both main visits and the accommodation break.

After resting, Klauzál Square’s gardens and benches offer an evening pause. Continue to Kazinczy Street, an established dining and nightlife street with restaurants, bars and ruin pubs.

Google Street View, 2022-09.

One day, two days or a late start

  • One day: follow the Pest route, keeping Parliament, the memorial, Basilica and market rather than crossing between all three clusters.
  • Two days: keep Pest and Castle Hill. Bath enthusiasts can replace Castle Hill with Day 3, losing its church and viewpoint cluster.
  • Late start: cut Liberty Square, Liberty Bridge and Károlyi Garden on Day 1; the promenade and Castle Garden Bazaar on Day 2; Vajdahunyad Castle and Liszt Ferenc Square on Day 3. Preserve your accommodation break.
  • Early departure: move the reserved Parliament tour off departure day.
  • An extra day: spread the existing paid visits and breaks rather than adding another excursion.

After the Jewish Quarter evening, extra time is best used to slow down the visits you most enjoyed.
