Cheap Eats in Salzburg: Four Budget Food Stops

A bowl of pho or a whole pizza makes a different lunch from a sausage sandwich grabbed between sights. In Salzburg, choose the order to suit your appetite, not just the lowest bill: Balkan-Grill Walter serves the city’s Bosna, Uncle Van offers Vietnamese noodle soup, and L’Osteria has an unusually large Margherita. Augustiner Bräustübl Mülln suits a lighter cheese-and-pretzel stop with time at a communal table. The spending estimates below cover food for one person. Beer, soft drinks and other extras sit outside them.

L’OsteriaDreifaltigkeitsgasse, across the SalzachWhole MargheritaAbout €12
Augustiner Bräustübl MüllnMüllnCubed cheese and a pretzel€6–10

Keep about €15 per person for food, then choose one main order rather than building a meal from several purchases. These rounded estimates depend on the filling or cheese portion you choose. Pho and a whole pizza are the full-meal choices. A Bosna is a substantial snack, while cheese and a pretzel make a light order.

For cheap food in the central Old Town, Balkan-Grill Walter is the Getreidegasse choice. Uncle Van and L’Osteria put a seated meal across the Salzach, while the brewery takes you away from the central sights to Mülln.

A drink, side or second order raises the bill, so decide on those separately. Walk-in counters and takeaway suit an unplanned stop. Arrange a table for a group or a restaurant meal at a fixed time, because buying food at a counter does not secure seats.

Balkan-Grill Walter

Balkan-Grill Walter belongs on a budget shortlist for its original Bosna, a sausage sandwich with a Salzburg history. The menu offers several variations, including the original. A Bosna usually puts bratwurst into a white bread roll with chopped onion, mustard and curry seasoning: a handheld order rather than a plated lunch with sides.

The recipe’s creator was Zanko Todoroff, the Bulgarian founder of Balkan Grill. He developed it in 1949 while working at the Müllner Bräustübl, creating the secret bratwurst recipe before later opening his own snack stand. Ordering the original gives this quick food stop a connection to the city’s eating traditions, rather than simply choosing a familiar sandwich.

You order through the serving window in the Stockhamer passage. Treat one Bosna as a substantial snack, not a guaranteed full meal if you arrive very hungry. It suits a pause during Old Town sightseeing, but if you would need another sandwich to feel satisfied, choose a full main elsewhere instead of assuming the smallest order will cover lunch.

Uncle Van

Uncle Van’s Steingasse branch is the choice for a bowl of pho as your main meal. Pho is Vietnamese noodle soup, usually built around broth, rice noodles, herbs and a meat or other topping. Here the pho choices include beef, tofu, vegetables and prawns, so you can choose the bowl around what you want to eat rather than adding a separate main.

Beef pho is a straightforward order if you want meat, while tofu or vegetable pho gives you another direction. If you need a vegetarian meal, ask about the broth as well as the topping: a tofu option alone does not establish what went into the soup.

Summer rolls are also on the menu, with fillings including tofu, beef, mushrooms and prawns. These are usually rice-paper rolls enclosing fillings and vegetables, rather than fried spring rolls. Keep a summer roll as an optional extra, not an assumed part of the pho budget. A bowl first is the simplest way to keep your food spending under control.

L’Osteria

L’Osteria’s Dreifaltigkeitsgasse restaurant suits a hungry diner who wants a whole Margherita as a single main course. Its mozzarella-and-basil pizza costs €11.90. Choosing that plain pizza keeps the order simple, without relying on sharing or adding a starter to turn it into lunch.

The pizza measures 45 cm in diameter, which explains why this is a notably large individual order. Give it room on the table, and judge whether you want anything else after the pizza rather than ordering several dishes at the outset.

Margherita usually combines tomato, mozzarella and basil, so its appeal is the straightforward topping rather than a long list of ingredients. It is a good choice when your priority is a substantial seated meal without meat. If your appetite is smaller, you do not have to finish the whole pizza. Ask whether leftovers can be packed to take away.

Augustiner Bräustübl Mülln

Augustiner Bräustübl Mülln is worth choosing for a light cheese-and-pretzel order at a communal table, rather than a conventional restaurant main. The brewery was established in 1621. Its Mülln setting, north-west of the central Old Town, makes this a separate food stop rather than a counter you pass while visiting Getreidegasse.

In the food arcade, Kammeringer specialises in bite-sized cubes of regional Salzburg cheeses, including Graukäse, or grey cheese. The stall also offers homemade cheese spreads, including Liptauer, a seasoned cheese spread, and herb cream cheese. Choose a portion of cubed cheese and look for a pretzel among the arcade’s baked goods. Keep the cheese portion modest if you want a light, inexpensive order, because adding more food changes both the size of the meal and the bill.

Buy directly from the individual stalls, then carry your food to your table. Beer is ordered and paid for separately, so the food budget is not a budget for an evening of drinking. Food-stall customers can eat at communal tables in the beer garden: be prepared to share a table rather than expecting a private restaurant setting.

The stalls follow the tavern’s service window, with an earlier start on public holidays as well as weekends. That makes this an afternoon or evening choice, not a morning snack stop.
