Fiesta San Antonio: Parades, Tickets and Traditions

Fiesta San Antonio offers very different ways to take part in the city’s spring celebrations: boats on the San Antonio River, a daytime street parade, illuminated floats after dark, and food and live music at Historic Market Square.

Choose your parade before arranging your stay. The Texas Cavaliers River Parade suits a riverside evening, Battle of Flowers puts flowers and marching bands in daylight, and Fiesta Flambeau rewards those happy to stay out late. Fiesta de los Reyes gives you a less seat-bound way to join the celebrations between parades.

Fiesta has no single fixed calendar date. Its dates vary each year around the traditional commemoration of the Battle of San Jacinto, fought on 21 April 1836. Fiesta commemorates the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto and celebrates San Antonio’s diverse cultures, history and community. The Battle of Flowers Parade began the celebration in 1891.

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission publishes event details and ticket links on its official Schedule page. Each named event has its own listing, bringing together celebrations run by separate organisers. A seat for one parade does not cover the others, so decide which procession you want to watch before choosing tickets.

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade makes the river itself the stage. More than 45 decorated floats travel on the San Antonio River, so the spectacle is waterborne rather than a procession down a street. Choose it if watching from the riverbank appeals more than joining a street-parade crowd. Have dinner beforehand, or leave a meal afterwards separate from the time you spend watching.

Battle of Flowers offers much more than its floral centrepiece. Costumed participants, giant helium balloons, horse-drawn carriages and antique cars join military entries and student pep squads. Choose this parade for a daytime celebration, particularly if a late evening is awkward for your group. Sun protection, water and comfortable shoes matter while you wait and watch, and a sit-down lunch afterwards gives the day a natural break.

Fiesta Flambeau turns the street procession into a night-time display, with light forming part of the entries rather than simply illuminating them. Local, regional and visiting bands accompany the dancers and other entertainers. Choose Flambeau for the illuminated spectacle, not an early finish. Eat before settling into your viewing place and leave room for a crowded departure afterwards.

The start of a parade is not the moment every viewing area sees its first float. Keep the meal and return journey flexible rather than fitting either tightly around the opening procession, especially if you are travelling with children or someone who needs regular breaks.

Parade viewing and reserved seats

The San Antonio River Walk brings you close to the Texas Cavaliers River Parade’s waterborne floats. Reserved riverbank seats are sold directly by the Texas Cavaliers, with seat selection at checkout. Choose your seat before deciding where to meet your group, since your ticket’s seat number determines your viewing position. The organiser’s parade information also includes a seat locator.

For accessible river viewing, the Cavaliers provide a designated section and ramps. Their Fiesta Stars programme also offers accessible viewing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through nonprofit partnerships. Treat this as a separate arrangement from simply choosing an ordinary riverbank seat.

Battle of Flowers sells reserved bleacher seats and street chairs through the Battle of Flowers Association. Named seating areas include Crockett Park, Madison Square and Lexington Avenue. Street chairs are the more useful starting point if bleachers would be difficult to reach. Lexington Avenue has this seating type, and accessible-viewing enquiries go to street-chair vendor Tom Krueger at Tomk3726@gmail.com or (210) 889-3993.

Flambeau offers separate purchase links for street chairs and bleacher seats through its listing on the Fiesta Commission’s Schedule page. A reserved seat gives you a known place to watch, though reaching it still means moving through a parade crowd.

For a popular unreserved Flambeau curbside spot, allow about three to four hours beforehand. That is time spent holding your viewing place, not extra time for another attraction. Bring water and plan food and toilet breaks within your group. If you would rather spend the afternoon elsewhere, reserved seating is a better fit than relying on finding a prime gap shortly before the procession.

Market Square, food and Fiesta traditions

Fiesta de los Reyes at Historic Market Square is a food-and-music celebration that usually runs every day of Fiesta, from 10am–11pm. Multiple stages feature Tejano and Conjunto, two regional musical traditions, alongside Latin jazz and country music. Come for a meal and stay for a performance, rather than treating the square only as a place to pass through.

Stalls regularly sell tacos, gorditas, thick corn pockets with fillings, and churros, fried pastries usually coated in cinnamon sugar. As a rough spending allowance, budget $10–20 per person for food and $3–10 per drink. A snack sits towards the lower end, while several dishes or an alcoholic drink move the total upwards.

Cascarones are confetti-filled eggs cracked playfully over someone’s head. Join in only with willing companions. Fiesta medals are commemorative pins sold by nonprofits, businesses and individuals, which people wear, collect and trade. Allow roughly $5–20 for a simple festive accessory or medal, with elaborate designs and collecting several costing more. Everyday clothes are enough to participate.

Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing for daytime attendance, with a hat and sun protection for exposed viewing areas. A light layer is useful for an evening out. Keep your hands free for food and drinks, and leave room on your clothing for medals if you want to collect them.

Rooms during Fiesta

Downtown room demand rises sharply during Fiesta, particularly near major events and on the busiest festival nights. Arrange accommodation around the parade or celebrations you most want to attend, rather than choosing a room first and assuming every event will be equally convenient.

For a double room for two adults, a rough nightly budget is $150–350 for a mid-range downtown hotel, with upscale riverfront properties and peak parade nights often reaching $350–600 or more. Room standard, central location and festival demand all move the price. Hotels farther from the celebrations can cost less, but the saving comes with a longer journey back.

A River Walk location is useful for the river parade, while a room near your chosen street-parade viewing area reduces the return journey afterwards. Choose a less event-centred location if quieter evenings matter more. Being close to the celebrations can also mean nearby crowds and late activity, especially when you want to sleep before the festivities end.

Crowds, closures and getting around

Fiesta FlambeauCrossroads Park & Ride, Walmart at Brooks5pm–midnight8pm

VIA’s usual parade Park & Ride services let you leave your car outside the downtown celebrations. Go to Walmart at Brooks, not Brooks Transit Center, for the Brooks departure. Take an early outbound service so you have time to reach your viewing place before the procession begins.

During Battle of Flowers and Flambeau, VIA buses are diverted away from downtown, with temporary passenger locations for transfers. Service can be less frequent or finish earlier than on an ordinary day. Your usual downtown stop may not be your return stop. Plan the journey home as carefully as the arrival, especially if it involves changing buses.

VIA publishes parade transport arrangements on its Fiesta service page. The City’s Public Works website carries downtown lane-closure reports and event-related street-closure lists, and its “Know Before You Go Downtown” announcements bring together access information. Keep your arrival and departure on the useful side of the parade, rather than planning a journey that requires a crossing through it.

Leave extra time for queues, crowded pavements and reaching your seat. For a pick-up, choose a meeting point away from the procession and make sure everyone in your group knows it before you separate. After an evening parade, a meal or drink is enjoyable only if it still leaves time to reach your return service.
