Gatlinburg Coffee Shops: Four Places for a Break

A coffee break in Gatlinburg can mean a cappuccino at Coffee & Company in The Village, a freshly made doughnut alongside your cup, or a stop where the setting matters as much as the drink. Choose by what you want with your coffee and where you already plan to be: two of these stops are in The Village, one is on Buckhorn Road and one pairs coffee with ice cream on the Parkway.

The best coffee stop depends on the break you want. Coffee & Company suits an interest in locally roasted coffee, while The Donut Friar makes the accompanying doughnut the reason to pause. Painted Bear Coffee Co. combines a latte with an art showroom away from the central Parkway cluster. Smoky Mountain Coffee & Creamery suits a dessert-led stop, with espresso and ice cream in the same order.

The drink-only estimates cover a cappuccino or latte without food. The Donut Friar estimate includes both coffee and a doughnut, while the creamery estimate covers the affogato itself. Size affects what you spend, and extra treats increase the bill beyond the stated order.

For a casual coffee break, you would usually walk in and order at the counter rather than reserve a table. Allow extra time if having a seat is important, especially when your group wants to settle down rather than take drinks away. Choose the location first if you are fitting the stop around other plans, rather than crossing town just for a cup.

If you want a full breakfast, lunch or dinner instead of a drink and a sweet treat, Gatlinburg restaurant meals offer a food-led choice for that larger pause.

Coffee & Company

Coffee & Company is the Village stop for coffee it roasts in Gatlinburg. Choose a cappuccino for a short break between browsing the shops, with the shop’s own roasting at the centre of the visit.

Cappuccino is on the menu, making this a straightforward stop for a milk-based coffee. Start with the drink itself, then decide whether you want anything alongside it.

The Village Shops describes Coffee & Company as “Gatlinburg’s oldest roasting coffee shop”. Within The Village, it fits a pause between browsing the shops, with the coffee itself as the main attraction. Head into the shopping area off the Parkway rather than looking only along the road frontage.

The Donut Friar

The Donut Friar belongs in a coffee-break selection because its doughnuts are made fresh on site. Order coffee with a doughnut when you want the bakery treat to be as important as the drink. This is a sweet pause rather than a full breakfast, and the pairing gives you a clear reason to stop while exploring The Village.

Founded in 1969, The Donut Friar is an established part of The Village’s shopping setting. Its long history gives the counter another reason to merit a visit. You can make it the treat stop during a look around the shops without building the day around a restaurant meal.

Choose cinnamon bread if you would rather have a different bakery treat. It is also on the menu, so a doughnut is not your only option alongside coffee. Decide which sweet you want before ordering, particularly if you intend to keep the break small.

Painted Bear Coffee Co.

Painted Bear Coffee Co. gives a coffee break another focus: its lobby doubles as an art showroom you can browse. Choose a latte and leave room to look around, rather than treating the stop solely as somewhere to collect a drink.

The Buckhorn Road location is away from the central Parkway cluster, so the art-focused setting is the reason to choose this stop. It makes most sense when you want to spend part of your break looking at the displayed work, or when your plans already bring you to this side of Gatlinburg. Make Buckhorn Road your destination rather than expecting to come across the shop during a central Parkway stroll.

Smoky Mountain Coffee & Creamery

Smoky Mountain Coffee & Creamery combines its two specialities in an affogato, espresso poured over ice cream. Choose it when you want something between a coffee and a dessert rather than a separate drink and pastry. The menu offers small and large sizes, letting you choose how substantial a sweet break you want.

Its Parkway location makes it a coffee-and-ice-cream stop while spending time along Gatlinburg’s main visitor corridor. The affogato is best enjoyed as the espresso meets the ice cream, rather than carried around for a long browsing session. Give yourself a pause to eat it before continuing.

Friday and Saturday suit a later coffee break, thanks to the longer service window. On the other days, fit your coffee stop earlier rather than saving it for after an evening meal.
