Flying to Vienna Airport is the simplest choice when travel time matters most. Rail offers a daytime journey through Germany or an overnight train from Amsterdam, while coaches run via Prague. Compare the whole journey from Trafalgar Square in London to Stephansplatz, beside Vienna’s St Stephen’s Cathedral, rather than just the first ticket.
Flights, trains and coaches
| Criterion | Fly to Vienna | Fly to Bratislava | Rail | Coach |

| Travel subtotal, not door to door | Heathrow + Austrian + airport bus: about 3¾ hours; excludes airport procedures and waiting | — | — | — |
| Main connections | Airport bus, then walk | Onward ground journey to Vienna | Brussels/Germany or Amsterdam | Prague |
| Adult tickets, per person | Flight roughly £50–£200 + London access + €11 bus; bags extra by fare | Flight roughly £30–£150 + London access + onward travel; bags extra by fare | Eurostar from £39 with return purchase + onward tickets + city travel | London access + both coaches + city travel |
| Departure pattern | Austrian: four daily; Ryanair: typically two–three daily | — | Amsterdam Eurostar: five direct trains on weekdays | — |
| Last flight, London time | Austrian only: 19:30 daily | Stansted: 23:20 Tuesdays through 20 October 2026 | — | — |
Flying can cost less than rail, but bags and flexibility can reverse the saving. Compare all tickets from Trafalgar Square to Stephansplatz. Fly to Vienna when time matters; consider Bratislava only if onward travel preserves the saving. Choose daytime rail through Germany or overnight rail through Amsterdam for an overland journey, and coaches when the complete fare justifies a long seated journey. With children or heavy bags, favour fewer connections. Add waiting, boarding, airport formalities and interchange allowances to travel subtotals before planning your arrival.
Flights to Vienna Airport
Vienna Airport is closer to Stephansplatz than Bratislava Airport. Austrian Airlines flies from Heathrow Terminal 2, British Airways from Terminal 3, and Ryanair from Stansted. Austrian’s flights take 2 hours 10 minutes or 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on departure. Austrian operates four flights daily, including weekends, with its final departure at 19:30 London time. Ryanair serves Vienna daily, typically with two or three departures.
From Trafalgar Square, walk to Leicester Square for the Piccadilly line to Heathrow: just under an hour to either terminal. For Stansted, use the Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus, Victoria line to Tottenham Hale and Stansted Express. The journey takes just over an hour.
Ryanair recommends reaching check-in or bag drop at least 2 hours before departure. British Airways says to arrive no earlier than 2 hours before a short-haul flight, a different instruction from a minimum arrival allowance. Add airport procedures and arrival formalities to the travel subtotal above.
From Vienna Airport bus terminal, Vienna Airport Bus VAB 2 reaches Morzinplatz in about 24 minutes, and an adult single costs €11. Walk through the old centre to Stephansplatz, about 700 metres and about 9 minutes. This option avoids an underground interchange with luggage.

The adult city singles are 1 Fahrt Digital WIEN (one digital journey in Vienna), €3.00, and 1 Fahrt WIEN (one journey in Vienna), €3.20. They cover the onward journeys from Wien Mitte, Erdberg and Vienna Central Station to Stephansplatz. Transfers are allowed in one direction within central Vienna, but you must not interrupt the journey. Airport travel is separate.
The IC airport train reaches Vienna Central Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) in about 15 minutes. Continue with the U1 arrival journey described below. A taxi’s road journey to Stephansplatz takes about 28 minutes, excluding dispatch and waiting. Budget roughly €40–€70 per vehicle, depending on the fare arrangement and traffic, but sharing can make it attractive with bags or children.
Flights to Bratislava Airport
Bratislava Airport is served from Stansted by Ryanair and from Luton by Wizz Air. The Ryanair flight takes 2 hours 10 minutes. Use the Stansted access journey described above.
Eurostar and onward trains
From Trafalgar Square, walk to Leicester Square and take the Piccadilly line to King’s Cross St Pancras for St Pancras International, about 17 minutes. Allow separately for Eurostar boarding procedures.
For daytime travel, take Eurostar to Brussels Midi, then continue through Germany. The fastest London–Brussels trains take about 2 hours 59 minutes. From Brussels, use ICE services through Germany or Eurostar to Cologne and onward trains to Vienna Central Station. A direct Munich–Vienna train takes approximately 4 hours, but allow separately for reaching Munich and changing trains.
| Service | Standard | Plus | Premier |
|---|---|---|---|
| London–Brussels | £39 | £70 | £209 |
| London–Amsterdam | £39 | £70 | £229 |
| Brussels–Cologne | €19 | €47 | €89 |
Germany–Austria Saver Fare Europe tickets start at €23.99 per person one way, including direct routes such as Munich–Vienna. Include additional German legs when comparing the complete fare, and choose ticket conditions that suit your need to change plans.
For overnight travel, London–Amsterdam Eurostar takes 4 hours 19 minutes. Continue on ÖBB Nightjet to Vienna. Its Sparschiene, or saver, seated fare starts at €29.90 per person one way. A seat is not sleeping accommodation: consider a couchette or sleeper for an overnight journey, especially with children.
On 3 October 2026, 10 direct Eurostar departures run from London to Brussels. London–Amsterdam has five direct trains per weekday. Choose a departure that leaves room for your onward connection.
At Vienna Central Station, take U1 towards Leopoldau to Stephansplatz, about 12 minutes. The adult city single described above covers this final leg. Keep the station arrival and underground transfer in your plans rather than treating arrival in Vienna as arrival at your destination.
Coaches via Prague
FlixBus runs the London–Prague coach from Victoria Coach Station on Buckingham Palace Road. From Trafalgar Square, make your way to this boarding station, not the nearby Green Line Coach Station.
Prague arrivals vary by service: Florenc Central Bus Station, the Main Railway Station stop on Opletalova Street, or Černý Most bus terminal. The Prague–Vienna departure is at the Main Railway Station stop on Opletalova Street. Match the Prague arrival and departure stops on your tickets before choosing the connection. Different terminals mean an extra city transfer with your bags.
Compare London access, both coach tickets and Vienna city travel together. A low first-leg fare needs to justify a long seated journey and the Prague connection.
In Vienna, the coach arrives at Erdberg International Busterminal (VIB). Take U3 towards Ottakring to Stephansplatz, about 19 minutes, using the adult city single described above. This final leg gets you into the old centre without another line change.
