Innsbruck Day Trip from Munich: Train and Old Town

Innsbruck earns the journey with the Golden Roof’s gilded tiles, the Imperial Palace’s Giant’s Hall and Maximilian I’s memorial in the Court Church. Between them, Maria-Theresien-Straße and the Inn riverfront put the historic centre against a mountain backdrop. This is a full-day excursion from Munich Central Station and back, using a direct Railjet each way, about 2 hours on each train.

The day favours historic interiors, lunch across the Inn and a riverfront pause over a Nordkette ascent. Choose the historic centre or the mountain outing, rather than trying to fit both into the same day.

Buy separate admissions for these two paid stops rather than the Innsbruck Card. The card’s broader coverage becomes more useful when you add attractions such as cable cars, but this walking day does not use them.

Arrange both train-specific rail tickets together before committing to the visits. Individual Court Church visitors need no advance reservation, but group tours are by appointment. The Innsbruck Card runs continuously from first use, and online purchases require validation on the specified start date.

  11. Return to Munich Central Station

    18:35

Finish the excursion at the station.

  12. Ends around 18:35

For 12 October 2026, the morning example is a direct Railjet departing Munich Central Station at 07:23. For 6 October 2026, a direct return leaves Innsbruck Central Station at 16:42 and reaches Munich Central Station at 18:26. Choose an outward and return pair for the same travel date. The illustrative clock above combines visits with Railjet journey allowances, rather than matching these two separate dated departures.

From Innsbruck Central Station, Maria-Theresien-Straße offers the Baroque Column of St Anne with Nordkette behind it. Cut this optional stop first if your train arrives late.

The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) rewards looking up from the square: its ornate canopy has 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles. You can appreciate its defining feature without entering the museum.

After the palace, the optional Imperial Gardens (Hofgarten) give you shady avenues and lawns rather than another interior.

Lunch on Innstraße takes you across the Inn into St Nikolaus. Tyrolean cheese dumplings, usually made with bread, cheese, eggs and milk, then flattened and fried, offer a substantial local choice.

After the Court Church, finish at Inn Bridge (Innbrücke), facing the colourful Mariahilf houses on the north bank and Nordkette behind them. Afternoon light usually suits the south-facing façades, while cloud and season change the mountain view.

Direct trains and coaches

  • Munich: München ZOB (central bus station), München Fröttmaning or München Ost (Busbahnhof Messestadt Ost), according to the assigned departure.
  • Innsbruck: Südbahnstraße or Olympiaworld, at Olympiastraße 10, according to the assigned journey.
  • Use the boarding stop printed on your ticket, because the listed stops are not interchangeable.

The direct train suits this day because it joins the two central stations without a change. From Innsbruck Central Station you continue on foot towards Maria-Theresien-Straße, rather than arranging another transfer before sightseeing. The coach is an alternative when its fare and assigned stops suit you, but it is not the transport used by the itinerary.

The rail journey is scenic: it crosses the Bavarian Alpine Foreland, then follows the Inn Valley through the Tyrolean Alps into Innsbruck. The direct route runs southeast via Rosenheim and Kufstein. The more westerly route via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and the border at Scharnitz is a different Alpine journey, not the routing of this direct Railjet day.

Direct trains run year-round, with some seasonal or weekend-only additions, including a Saturday Railjet during the summer holiday season. Seat reservations are optional for individual daytime travellers, but reserving is worthwhile on busy days if you want a guaranteed seat together.

FlixBus’s published first outward departure is 04:00, with departure times varying by day and route. Choose the stop as carefully as the departure: a coach leaving from a different Munich terminal changes how you begin the outing, while an Olympiaworld arrival changes your approach to the historic centre.

The Imperial Palace

After the Golden Roof, the Imperial Palace (Hofburg) turns your attention from a public façade to Habsburg ceremonial rooms. The Giant’s Hall (Riesensaal) is the interior highlight, a grand setting whose scale makes it worth lingering rather than treating the palace as a quick stop.

The adult ticket is named Imperial Apartments. The palace’s rooms range from the Guard, Audience and Council halls to Empress Elisabeth’s Apartment, with furniture and portrait galleries adding context to the residential spaces. Look for the contrast between rooms used to receive visitors and those associated with private court life.

The morning placement leaves the palace before the optional garden break and lunch. If you arrive late, shorten the outdoor stops rather than squeezing the ceremonial rooms into a hurried circuit.

The Court Church

After lunch on Innstraße, return across the river to the Court Church (Hofkirche). Maximilian I’s monumental memorial is an empty tomb, surrounded by 28 larger-than-life bronze figures. They represent Habsburg ancestors and relatives alongside legendary and historical rulers, giving the memorial the character of an assembled dynasty rather than a solitary monument.

After the palace’s state rooms, this interior offers a more focused encounter with imperial remembrance. Spend time looking at the individual figures and their relationship to the central memorial rather than rushing straight through to the river.

The ticket also admits you to the Ferdinandeum, the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, the Zeughaus armoury and TIROL PANORAMA with the Kaiserjäger Museum. This day leaves those museums unvisited, including the Folk Art Museum beside the church, to keep lunch and the final riverfront pause unhurried.

Nordkette, weather and walking

From the final Inn Bridge pause, Nordkette remains a backdrop rather than another stop. Allow about 3–4 hours for the city-centre ascent to Hafelekar, time at the viewpoint and the return. Adding it would bring you back to Munich roughly that much later, before any extra wait for a train. Replace city visits with the mountain outing. Do not tack it onto this walking day. This route instead gives that time to the Imperial Palace, Court Church, lunch and riverfront.

The local walking is spread across short central stretches, with the longest leg taking you from Inn Bridge back to Innsbruck Central Station. You also spend time standing inside both paid attractions. Comfortable shoes matter more than hiking equipment for this version of the excursion. Retain the meal and riverfront pause as breaks from being on your feet.

In rain or short daylight, keep the paid interiors and shorten the outdoor stops. After a late arrival, omit Maria-Theresien-Straße’s pause and the optional Imperial Gardens first. The Golden Roof can still be appreciated from the square, and the riverfront need not become a long stay if the mountain backdrop is hidden.

If a full cross-border city day is more than you want, other day trips from Munich by public transport offer shorter outings and different destinations without adding a car.
