Accommodation is the biggest obstacle to a cheap Key West trip, especially if you want a private room to yourself. Walking around Old Town, watching the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration and spending time at Higgs Beach can keep sightseeing costs low without leaving you short of things to do. A realistic budget still needs every meal, restaurant extras and the full lodging bill, not just the advertised room rate. All prices below are in US dollars (USD).
Daily budgets for three spending levels
| Criterion | Shoestring | Mid-range | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation per night | Dormitory bed: $80–140 per person | Private room: $240–400 for two | Higher-comfort room: $400–650 for two |
| Breakfast with coffee | Takeaway: $10–15 | Café: $18–25 | Restaurant: $25–40 |
| Lunch | Cuban sandwich: $12–18 | Simple lunch: $18–25 | Restaurant: $30–45 |
| Dinner | Groceries or counter service: $15–22 | Casual restaurant: $35–55 | Restaurant: $60–90 |
| Alcohol | None: $0 | One beer: $8–12 | One cocktail: $18–25 |
| Sightseeing | Free Old Town, Mallory Square or Higgs Beach: $0 | Hemingway admission allowance: $20 | Hemingway admission allowance: $20 |
| Local travel | Walking: $0 | City routes day pass: $4 | Bicycle hire: $20–35 |
| Complete day without accommodation | $37–55 per person | $103–141 per person | $173–255 per person |
| Day plus accommodation, per person sharing or one dormitory bed | $117–195 | $223–341 | $373–580 |
| Solo day plus whole private room or one dormitory bed | $117–195 | $343–541 | $573–905 |
A mid-range trip is a useful starting point for estimating your own costs. For three days and three nights, allow roughly $670–1,020 per person sharing, or $1,030–1,620 alone. The cheaper ends suit simpler venues and quieter dates, while central rooms, fuller meals and stronger demand move you upwards. Arrival travel and optional water excursions are separate additions.
Rooms, dormitory beds and lodging taxes
A shared dormitory bed is the cheapest realistic accommodation category, rather than a bargain private hotel room. Seashell Motel and Key West Hostel offers bookable male, female and mixed dormitories. You pay for your own bed, so this option avoids the solo traveller’s cost of carrying an entire room.
For private accommodation, typical all-in nightly allowances for two are around $220–350 in New Town or nearby Stock Island on quieter dates, and $280–450 in Old Town. Winter demand and popular weekends can push ordinary private rooms towards $400–650 or more. These broad market ranges allow for tax and modest mandatory fees.
Old Town puts historic sights and evening outings close enough to walk between. New Town and Stock Island can offer better room value, but an outlying room saves money only if its extra travel does not swallow the difference. Compare the complete stay, including property parking, resort or cleaning fees and your likely bus or taxi use. A solo traveller pays the whole private-room bill, while two people split it.
September is often cheaper, but the saving comes with heat, rain and storm risk. Late summer and autumn generally bring lower-demand opportunities. Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November each year. Fantasy Fest takes place in late October, typically over ten days leading up to Halloween, so autumn festival dates can behave very differently from quieter weeks.
- Combined short-stay lodging tax
- 12.5% of the taxable accommodation charge
- Sales-tax component
- 7.5%
- Local lodging levy
- 5%
- Local levy exemption
- Bona fide written lease for more than six months of continuous residence
Tax applies to the total taxable rental amount, including mandatory resort, cleaning, processing and other guest charges, not just the headline nightly rate. Damage deposits and optional travel insurance are not taxable. Judge a room by its final stay total, particularly when a low advertised rate carries substantial compulsory extras.
Food, drinks and restaurant bills
A Cuban sandwich, often called a Cuban mix in Key West, makes a substantial counter-service lunch. It usually combines pork, ham, cheese, pickles and mustard in pressed bread, with local variations. Takeaway and counter-service meals preserve a full day’s eating at a lower cost than three restaurant visits.

- Before tax and tips, a takeaway breakfast with coffee typically costs $8–12 per person, while a café breakfast is around $14–20.
- A Cuban sandwich or simple counter-service lunch is usually $10–16 per person before extras.
- A casual sit-down dinner typically costs $25–40 per person before tax and tips, with seafood and central tourist-area restaurants tending towards the upper end.
- A beer commonly costs $6–9 and a cocktail $14–20 before tax and tips.
A usable kitchen lets you replace a restaurant dinner with groceries without skipping the meal. Allow roughly $10–18 per person for a simple self-catered dinner, depending on ingredients and whether you share purchases. The daily comparison allows extra room for meal taxes and customary tips.
Restaurant food and drink carries 7.5% sales tax. A separate 1% food-and-beverage levy can apply at qualifying establishments licensed for on-premises alcohol consumption. It excludes hotels and motels, package alcohol sales and businesses meeting the statutory small-business exemption.
For table service, a customary discretionary tip is around 18–20% of the pre-tax bill. Identify any automatic gratuity before adding another tip. Menus, applicable contracts and ordering websites or apps must disclose an operations charge’s amount or percentage and purpose in type at least as large as their descriptions or general provisions. Without these materials, a clear notice belongs on the menu board or by the register. The bill must state that the charge is included and give its amount or percentage. Receipts separate gratuity, operations charges and sales tax, including any automatic gratuity within an operations charge. Disclosed dining plans, packages and fixed-price meals are exempt from these requirements. An operations charge is not automatically a gratuity, so read its description before deciding what to leave your server.

Key West Lighthouse combines the tower with the keeper’s quarters, while the Custom House focuses on the island’s art and history. The Key West Art & Historical Society’s Culture Pass covers both, plus its other two museums. Choose a pass for museums you actually want to visit, rather than adding stops merely to use it. Custom House concessions also cover seniors, locals, college ID holders, retired military and youth.
Fort Zachary Taylor combines a historic fort with beach time. Its entry price depends on how you arrive and, for a vehicle, how many people it carries.
Old Town’s streets provide a free introduction to the island’s architecture. Public entry to the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration is free, with performer tips optional. Higgs Beach also has free public access. One paid sight alongside these free outings is enough for the daily sightseeing budget.
Optional snorkelling trips and sunset cruises typically add around $60–120 per person, with duration, inclusions and boat type moving the price. Keep these separate from your day allowance.
Walking, buses, bikes and parking
Walking is the cheapest way around Old Town. The Duval Loop serves the historic centre around Duval Street, but it is a fare-charging service.
| Service | Adult single | Day pass | Other pass or coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duval Loop | $1 | $4 | $8 seven-day pass |
| City routes | $2 | $4 | Key West and Stock Island |
| Super Pass | — | $12 | City and Lower Keys routes towards Marathon |
The Loop day pass breaks even at four rides and saves from the fifth. The City day pass breaks even at two rides and saves from the third.
Bicycles give you more freedom than walking for beach outings and less parking hassle than a car. Short taxi or ride-hailing trips typically cost around $15–30 per vehicle, with demand and distance moving the fare.

Municipal metered parking normally costs $6 per hour, with special-event rates possible. Add property parking when weighing New Town or Stock Island rooms.
Compare complete arrival costs, not airfares alone: Key West airport can avoid the onward ground journey from Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports. Add mainland transfers, car hire and fuel to those alternatives. Arrival travel is separate from local daily spending.
Ways to spend less
- Replace a casual restaurant dinner with a Cuban sandwich or counter-service meal. Using the daily allowances, a comparable lower-end or upper-end substitution saves roughly $20–35 per person, including typical extras, while keeping the meal.
- Choose Mallory Square or Higgs Beach instead of Hemingway for one day’s outing. You save the $20 sightseeing allowance per adult if you make no other paid visit that day.
- Share a mid-range private room with another traveller. Splitting its bill saves about $120–200 per person per night against occupying the same room alone.
- Buy Key West Lighthouse tickets online to save $1.50 per adult, or Custom House tickets online to save $3.05 per adult against the respective door prices.
- Choose a car-free Old Town stay when your outings are walkable. Avoiding four hours of standard municipal metered parking saves $24 per vehicle, as well as whatever your car hire would cost. A dearer central room can cancel that saving.
- Skip one bar round. Forgoing the beer or cocktail in the daily allowances saves roughly $8–25 per person, depending on the drink and venue.
Change the spending that adds least to your visit first: extra drinks, unused car parking and restaurant service at every meal. Keep the meals and sights you came for.
Quieter-date rooms can make the largest difference, but late-summer weather and festival demand complicate the choice. For an outlying stay, subtract extra travel from the room saving and compare the complete taxed bill, including compulsory fees. A usable kitchen is more valuable than a nominally cheap room where every meal requires eating out.
