Myrtle Beach Chair and Umbrella Rentals: Sets & Rules

On Myrtle Beach’s city ocean beach, rent a managed chair-and-umbrella set if you want staff to handle setup and removal, or bring your own chairs and compliant shade. John’s Beach Service and Lack’s Beach Service cover different stretches of the city beachfront, so your beach access point determines which service you use.

Personal equipment gives you more flexibility for a beach visit outside rental hours. Before packing, decide how much seating and shade your group needs, and make sure your shade meets the city’s seasonal rules.

Access to Myrtle Beach’s public ocean beach is free. Equipment hire is a separate expense, so you can enjoy the beach without paying for a rental.

For a couple, either service’s standard set supplies a seat each and shared shade. With John’s Beach Service, an additional chair suits someone joining an existing rental, while an extra umbrella adds shade for a larger group. Choose the equipment count before deciding how many rental days you need.

John’s multi-day set prices suit repeat beach visits, while the late-day option suits a shorter afternoon stay. It does not extend the daily equipment-use window. For Lack’s Beach Service, distinguish a single beach day from a run of days when choosing your set.

Beach services and daily setup

  1. Identify the service covering the beach beside your accommodation or chosen public access point.
  2. Choose a standard set or additional equipment to match your group’s seating and shade needs.
  3. Let the service’s attendants handle daily setup and removal rather than carrying and packing rental equipment yourself.

John’s Beach Service covers the intervening central city beachfront, between Lack’s Beach Service’s southern and far-northern stretches. Your position along the oceanfront matters more than which company name you recognise.

Lack’s Beach Service covers the beachfront from 12th Avenue South to the southern city limits, plus the stretch from 82nd Avenue North to the northern city limits. These avenue landmarks help you identify the service for your part of Myrtle Beach without treating the whole coast as one rental area.

Both providers’ staff put out rental equipment each day and remove it afterwards. Lack’s sets it up in the morning and takes it down at the end of the day. John’s attendants repeat setup and takedown throughout your rental reservation, saving you the carrying and packing work.

Swimming is a recognised recreational use of Myrtle Beach’s public ocean beach, subject to beach-safety directions and temporary restrictions when hazards arise. North Myrtle Beach is a separate municipality with separate beach rental arrangements, not the northern section of this city’s rental system.

John’s Beach Service rentals are first come, first served. Arriving earlier gives you more of the equipment-use window, while an afternoon visit leaves less time to enjoy your set. The late-day price is a shorter-use option, not an evening rental.

Outside staffed rental periods, bring compliant personal chairs and shade if you want equipment for your visit. This is also the practical choice for staying on the sand after John’s rental equipment has been taken down, provided you follow the city’s placement and removal rules.

Bringing your own chairs and shade

You may bring your own beach chairs, provided they do not obstruct access or create a hazard. Personal shade rules apply throughout Myrtle Beach’s public city beaches, so choose equipment for the season before carrying it onto the sand.

Do

  • From Memorial Day through Labor Day, use a circular umbrella no more than 7.5 feet in diameter, or choose a managed rental.
  • Outside that period, keep other shade devices within 12 by 12 feet (144 square feet) and 9 feet high when installed.
  • Place shade above the high-tide line, outside and in-line with or landward of the established rental umbrella line, at least 10 feet from that line.
  • Keep lifeguard sightlines and access clear. Secure non-umbrella shade safely, keep tethers within its perimeter and leave devices separate.

Don’t

  • Bring tents, canopies or other non-umbrella shade during the summer restriction.
  • Use oversized shade devices outside summer.
  • Place shade seaward of the established umbrella line or where it blocks access or lifeguard visibility.
  • Connect devices together or extend securing lines beyond a device’s perimeter.

Keep other shade devices at least 10 feet apart. Circular umbrellas meeting the size limit are exempt from this spacing rule between devices. That exemption does not remove the required clearance from the rental umbrella line. Keep the two placement requirements distinct when choosing your spot.

Myrtle Beach Police Department’s Beach Patrol enforces the shade restrictions. Beach-safety authorities also include Fire Department Ocean Rescue staff, lifeguards and other authorised personnel. Follow their directions so your equipment does not interfere with swimming safety or beach access.
