La Gomera Day Trip from Tenerife: Forest and Valley

El Cedro’s mist-catching laurel forest, Hermigua’s valley and the carved church portal in San Sebastián give you three distinct reasons to cross from Tenerife to La Gomera. An optional stop adds the volcanic pinnacle of Roque de Agando. This is a full-day excursion from Los Cristianos ferry terminal and back, with travel from your accommodation additional.

The independent circuit pairs a short forest walk with a hire car and village lunch. It leaves out the longer El Cedro-to-Hermigua descent: you retrace the hermitage path, then drive to Hermigua rather than committing to a one-way hike.

La Gomera is worth the crossing if you want the forest as well as a village stop. This circuit takes you beyond the port town without turning the forest visit into a long hike. If you mainly want a relaxed waterfront and old-town stroll, staying in San Sebastián avoids the island driving.

The clock below uses Fred. Olsen Express outward and Baleària Canarias for the return, with each crossing taking about an hour. Choose the outward and return sailings together, then arrange a car in San Sebastián with collection and return suited to them.

Fred. Olsen fares vary with availability and travel date. For a visitor’s ferry budget, use the fare for your passenger category and selected sailing rather than resident discounts. Reserve the transport rather than looking for an attraction pass, because the forest walk and final church-façade pause do not need a paid-entry ticket.

  10. Ends around 20:00

From Los Cristianos, cross to San Sebastián and collect your car. Arrange port-area car handovers to fit your chosen sailings, so you can set off for the forest after collection and leave the car before your final town pause.

Roque de Agando is a towering volcanic plug rising above the forest. Drop this optional viewpoint first if the morning runs late, keeping the forest and lunch as the main visits.

At El Cedro, the dense canopy catches mist, showing why Garajonay’s laurel forest is so distinctive. Follow signed Route 8 towards the Hermitage of Lourdes: the short leg is 750 m and takes about 20 minutes one way. Turn at the hermitage and retrace the path rather than continuing downhill.

After the forest, drive to Hermigua for lunch in its valley setting. Central Hermigua and its surroundings offer casual tapas and fuller sit-down meals. Try almogrote, the local cheese spread: mature hard cheese is grated or pounded with garlic, pepper and oil into a paste, sometimes with tomato, and served with bread.

Back in San Sebastián, return the car before your old-town pause. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) rewards an exterior look with its richly carved Baroque portal. Afternoon light suits this final façade stop. Stay outside rather than making an interior visit, then enjoy the surrounding streets before boarding.

Hire car or guided excursion

Choose an island hire car if the Route 8 walk is the reason you are going. You control the forest stop, can leave Agando out and can choose lunch in Hermigua. The trade-off is responsibility for winding-road driving, separate ferry and car reservations, and getting back to the port with time to spare.

A guided ferry-and-coach excursion suits you if you want the island transport coordinated. Representative programmes include return ferry travel, an island coach between their advertised stops and a guide. You follow the group’s circuit rather than deciding how long to stay at each place.

These excursions generally give you a short guided introduction to Garajonay, followed by viewpoints and other island stops. One representative programme has an easy walk of roughly an hour, but that is not a promise of the same forest duration on every excursion, nor necessarily the El Cedro hermitage path used here.

For a first look at the island without driving, the coach approach is a useful choice. For time under the canopy followed by a village meal of your choosing, the independent circuit is the closer match. Do not assume an excursion reproduces these stops merely because it includes Garajonay.

Boarding and El Cedro vehicle access

Agree where the San Sebastián car handovers take place before committing to the circuit. Arrange collection and return around your sailings, allowing for the paperwork at each end. The clock’s handover allowances leave room for these tasks. Reserve a car for the island rather than expecting to find one on arrival.

For Fred. Olsen, carry the identity document used for the booking, such as your passport or national identity card, together with any additional documents the booking requires to be validated. Digital Spanish identification is accepted only through the official MiDNI app.

Walking access to El Cedro needs no advance reservation or permit. Summer vehicle controls are different: driving and parking in the controlled El Cedro stream area and Las Mimbreras requires a reservation during the 09:30–17:00 control window. If summer controls apply to your visit, arrange vehicle access alongside the car, because a foot-passenger ferry ticket does not cover it.

Wet paths and weather disruption

Wear shoes with a grippy sole for the El Cedro walk, even when you plan only the short hermitage path. Damp dirt can be muddy or slick. The steeper stone-step descent beside the stream is a separate concern on longer El Cedro routes, not a reason to turn this short return walk into a downhill hike.

Carry a light waterproof and a warm layer for the forest. If you are prone to motion sickness, plan for both the sea crossing and winding island roads. Keeping the viewpoint optional gives you room to stop without sacrificing boarding time.

Fred. Olsen offers a refund or rebooking on the first or a later available sailing when external disruption changes sailings. Baleària Canarias offers available alternative sailings or nearby ports and booking changes. When weather cancels travel without an alternative, it offers a free change or full refund. Provide your mobile number for its SMS notifications. A later available crossing may not preserve your same-day return.

The longer descent to Hermigua

At the Hermitage of Lourdes, this day turns back towards the car rather than continuing towards Hermigua. The signed PR-LG 3 trail from El Cedro to Hermigua is the longer walk left out. Taking that descent would mean a one-way hike and a separate plan to retrieve the car, not simply adding another forest stop.

Retracing the short path keeps the car with you and replaces the descent with a drive to village lunch. That choice leaves room for the return to San Sebastián and its church-façade pause without making the ferry depend on finishing a longer walk.

For a gentler excursion, stay in San Sebastián after the crossing and spend your time in the old town instead. You give up the laurel forest and Hermigua valley, but also the mountain-road circuit. Choose the full day for those landscapes, not just to reach another island.
