Munich to Prague by Train: Tickets and Arrival

Take the direct train for a daytime journey from Marienplatz in Munich to Old Town Square in Prague, especially if you are carrying bags: both railway stations have shorter walks to these central points than the coach terminals. The overnight coach can suit a late start, but its next-morning arrival and operating days need to fit your plans.

Direct train versus the FlixBus overnight coach

Pros

  • Shorter station approaches make the train easier with bags.
  • About 6 hours 10 minutes travelling and walking between the central endpoints, using the train example, versus about 7 hours 15 minutes for the overnight coach.
  • A through daytime train avoids an overnight coach journey.

Cons

  • The direct-train timetable ends in the afternoon; the overnight coach can suit a later start when it operates.
  • The advertised train fare from €42 is not guaranteed for your departure: compare the actual train and coach offers before choosing.

These subtotals exclude waiting, finding the platform or coach bay, and boarding. Add a separate allowance for those tasks, and extra walking time with heavy bags.

FlixBus N83 lists Munich ZOB at 23:55 to Prague Florenc at 06:15 next day, a 6-hour-20-minute journey when operating. Its timetable, valid 28 April 2025–3 April 2027, excludes Tuesdays and Wednesdays during specified seasonal periods. Separately, FlixBus’s Munich–Prague route page lists 21:50 as its latest departure, varying by day, but that is not the terminal-specific overnight timetable.

The current alex/ČD service remains in operation. From 13 December 2026, Leo Express is scheduled to take over the Czech side, with Die Länderbahn remaining in Germany.

Tickets and boarding at Munich Hauptbahnhof

  1. Select München Hbf to Praha hl.n. (Prague main station), then choose a direct ALX/alex departure for your travel date.
  2. Add a separately purchased seat reservation if you want one, particularly when travelling together.
  3. At Munich Hauptbahnhof, match the departure time, Prague destination and service identity on the departure board to find your platform.
  4. Keep your printed or digital ticket, photo ID and any applicable BahnCard ready for inspection.

Once you reach Munich Hauptbahnhof from Marienplatz, allow time to reach the platform and handle your bags. Arrival at the station entrance is not the same as being ready to board.

A reservation is optional, not compulsory. It is useful if sitting together matters to you, because buying a travel ticket alone does not reserve adjacent seats. During inspection, show train staff your ticket: a digital ticket can be its PDF or the barcode in the app.

On alex RE25, bring luggage you can safely load, stow and unload without inconveniencing other passengers. Use designated luggage spaces and keep aisles and doors clear. ČD permits items up to 50 kg, subject to capacity and operational restrictions. Pack for handling your own luggage, not simply for staying within the weight limit.

The rail route and scenery

Leaving Munich Hauptbahnhof, the direct train runs through Regensburg, Schwandorf, Furth im Wald, Domažlice and Pilsen (Plzeň) before reaching Prague. It is an ALX/alex service, not a high-speed train: choose it for the through journey rather than expecting high-speed running.

The route is scenic in daylight, with rolling rural landscapes across Bavaria and western Bohemia and stretches of wooded border countryside around the Bohemian Forest.

Near Regensburg, the railway crosses the Danube, and closer to Prague, you may also have views of the Vltava. The precise departure and visibility affect what you see, so river views are a possibility rather than a feature of every journey. If scenery matters to you, favour a departure that keeps the border section in daylight.

From the main station to Old Town Square

On arrival at Prague main station, use the main pedestrian exit from the lower concourse into Vrchlického sady park, not the Winston Churchill Square exit. From the park, head towards Jeruzalémská Street and continue through the centre towards Old Town Square.

The walk from the station to Old Town Square is about 1.3 km and takes about 17 minutes. With luggage, give yourself extra time beyond that walking estimate: you still have to leave the platform, reach the concourse and handle your bags through the centre. Keep the final walk in your arrival plans, particularly if someone is meeting you in the square rather than at the station.

Late trains and overnight travel

For a late start from Munich, choose the overnight coach only if its operating day and next-morning arrival suit you. Distinguish a through service from a late rail itinerary with multiple changes. Arrival after midnight also changes the date of your plans in Prague.

Staying in Munich suits you if no suitable onward departure is reachable or you prefer daytime travel. The first direct train is listed at 04:44, but the timetable differs on weekends and public holidays: that early departure is not a universal next-morning option.
