Nearest Airport to Granada: GRX or Málaga?

Flying to Granada means choosing between Granada-Jaén Airport and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport. A convenient flight into Granada-Jaén gives you the simpler public-transport arrival, while Málaga offers more direct-flight choices, including from the UK. Compare the flight with the onward journey, not just the airfare: the Málaga coach arrives at Granada bus station, rather than in the historic centre.

Choose GRX for a short city visit if the flight suits your dates and budget. With luggage, its direct bus to the cathedral also avoids unloading at a coach terminus and boarding a second vehicle.

A cheaper flight to Málaga can be worthwhile, but allow for the coach ticket, the city connection and waiting between services. For a late landing, the last-coach warning below matters more than the airfare saving: landing is not the same as being ready at the boarding point.

Granada-Jaén: names, code and location

Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport is the nearest airport handling commercial passenger flights to central Granada. Its booking code is GRX. Granada Airport, Granada-Jaén and Federico García Lorca are names for the same airport, not separate arrival options.

The airport is in Chauchina, about 17 km west of Granada city. The shared Granada-Jaén name reflects its regional role, but it does not mean that you land in Jaén and then have to travel back to Granada.

When comparing flights, use the airport code to distinguish it from Málaga-Costa del Sol, whose code is AGP. That distinction matters on a flight-search result: both can serve a Granada trip, but their onward public-transport journeys are quite different.

UK flights and connections

As of 5 October 2026, there are no operating direct UK flights to Granada-Jaén. Wizz Air UK has announced a London Luton–Granada service starting on 27 October 2026. For travel before that start date, choose a connecting flight to GRX or a direct flight to Málaga with an onward ground journey.

Málaga has direct services from a broad range of UK airports. These examples show some of the departure-airport and airline combinations, rather than the whole network.

Compare the whole arrival day when choosing a direct Málaga flight over an air connection to GRX. A direct flight removes an airport interchange, but adds a coach journey and a city-bus change after landing. A connection into GRX keeps the ground arrival simpler, though the flight connection itself may mean more waiting. The same trade-off applies if you start outside the UK: the nearer airport is useful only if the flight journey also suits you.

Boarding points and central arrivals

From GRX, ALSA Line 245 serves the Gran Vía de Colón cathedral stop directly. Board outside Arrivals on Level 0 at the stop marked “Autobuses / Bus”. The single fare is €3.10. Departures follow flight arrivals. Buses wait for passengers to land and collect baggage before leaving for the city. The last bus leaves about 30 minutes after the last scheduled flight lands.

From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, ALSA’s direct Granada coaches terminate at Granada bus station. There are 15 services daily. The road journey from Málaga Airport to Granada bus station is about 132 km. Continue from there by city bus to reach the centre.

At Málaga, follow the passenger exit straight across the forecourt to the roadside stops at the Transport Interchange, outside arrivals on Level 0. The walk from arrivals to the Granada coach boarding point is about 550 metres and takes about 7 minutes. Allow extra time with luggage, and leave room for baggage collection before choosing a coach departure.

Essential fact

At Granada bus station, take city-bus line 33 to the Gran Vía cathedral stop. This leg takes about 15 minutes. The ordinary single ticket costs €1.60 and includes free transfers between lines for 60 minutes. Keep the ticket if you need another city bus.

From the cathedral stop, both airport arrivals finish with the same walk to Plaza Isabel la Católica: about 250 metres, taking about 3 minutes. This brings you into the centre, rather than leaving you at the outlying coach terminus.
