One Day in Nashville: A Downtown Music Itinerary

Country music’s recordings and stage costumes at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Ryman’s auditorium and Johnny Cash’s handwritten lyrics give this downtown Nashville day its substance, with a change of pace at the Cumberland River before dinner and live bands on Lower Broadway. Choose this day for music history followed by music you can hear live, rather than a wider tour of Nashville’s neighbourhoods.

Historic RCA Studio B is the deliberate omission: its tour takes about an hour including organised transport from the opening museum. Keeping that time downtown leaves room for Cash’s collection and the river pause. Nashville itineraries for longer stays give you room to add experiences beyond this downtown sequence.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Walk of Fame Park

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum gives you the broad history before the individual artists and performance spaces later in the day. Sing Me Back Home connects recordings and films with instruments, stage costumes and personal objects. In the Hall of Fame Rotunda, bronze plaques honour the musicians admitted to the Hall.

General admission covers the permanent and rotating galleries and museum programmes. RCA Studio B and Hatch Show Print guided tours, and the audio tour, are separately purchased additions. The galleries open daily from 9am–5pm, making the opening visit a focused introduction rather than an attempt to see every display.

Ramped entrances with automated doors and lifts serving every museum level provide step-free access. Complimentary manual wheelchairs at Guest Services are first-come, first-served. The indoor galleries also give shelter when outdoor walking is uncomfortable.

After the museum, the optional Music City Walk of Fame Park adds bronze and granite stars set into the walkway. Each honours a musician or music-industry figure with a name and commemorative emblem.

Fifth + Broadway lunch and the Ryman

From Music City Walk of Fame Park, continue to Fifth + Broadway for Assembly Food Hall. Multiple walk-in vendors let everyone choose their own lunch, without tying the day to a seated restaurant reservation. The hall opens daily at 8am and stays open through the evening, although individual eatery hours vary. Downtown lunch is usually served around 11am–2pm, so this break falls within the usual lunchtime window.

After lunch, the Ryman Auditorium brings the history into a performance space. Its self-guided tour combines artist costumes and instruments with signed Hatch Show Print posters, the Opry 100 and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame exhibitions, and the immersive Soul of Nashville theatre experience. In the auditorium, look for the stage’s six-foot circle of wood from the original Grand Ole Opry House. A souvenir stage photo is included when available.

Reserve a Ryman entry slot that follows your lunch break. The self-guided adult ticket is $25 plus tax through 31 October 2026, with fees included in that price. Keeping lunch at the food hall makes it easier to finish eating without waiting for table service before your reserved tour.

Johnny Cash Museum and a chocolate stop

From the Ryman, continue to the Johnny Cash Museum, where handwritten lyrics and objects from Sun Records and the Folsom Prison concert bring one career into focus. Stage costumes, instruments and photographs connect Cash’s public performances with his personal history.

Adult admission is $32.95 plus tax, with a convenience fee on online purchases. Tickets need no reserved entry time, and online tickets do not expire, giving this afternoon visit more flexibility than the earlier admissions.

Nearby, Goo Goo Chocolate Co. sells Clusters to walk-in visitors. The original Cluster combines milk chocolate, caramel, peanuts and marshmallow nougat. Skip this optional snack stop first if the earlier visits run long, preserving the accommodation break before heading back out.

John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge

After Goo Goo Chocolate Co. and your accommodation break, head to the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge for the Cumberland River, Nissan Stadium and downtown skyline. A quick photo stop can take about ten minutes, but this day leaves room to linger. The pause is for river views, not a guaranteed sunset: late-afternoon light changes with the season, and winter daylight fades earlier.

Pedestrians and cyclists can use the bridge, with a clear route or escorted crossing maintained during permitted events. Lifts provide access at the East Bank end and from First Avenue South on the west side.

The day involves sustained pavement walking and standing. The rest is most useful with nearby accommodation, so allow for your own journey back and out again. Stay indoors during thunderstorms or heavy rain. In heat, carry water and shorten the exposed bridge pause.

SoBro dinner and Lower Broadway music

From the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, turn back into SoBro, the area south of Broadway around the convention centre and Peabody Street. Evening restaurants here let you eat away from the busiest music bars before returning to Lower Broadway. Downtown dinner is usually served around 5pm–10pm.

Hot chicken is fried chicken coated in a spicy seasoning, commonly cayenne-based. Choose a mild heat level if you are unsure, as the hotter versions can be intense. A meat-and-three gives you one meat dish with three side dishes, often vegetables, beans or macaroni cheese. Expect roughly $15–$25 per person for a counter-service meal, or $25–$45 for a seated dinner, with drinks and tips taking spending higher.

Lower Broadway’s honky-tonks are live-music bars, and bands are normally playing by early evening, often earlier. Entry is usually cover-free, but particular venues and special events can charge. Read the door sign or ask before entering. Tip the musicians when you stay to listen, especially when requesting a song.

Expect loud music and standing, and leave when you have heard enough rather than forcing several bars into the finish.

An onward drive to Nashville International Airport takes about 9 minutes from the final area. Traffic, pickup and airport formalities need additional time, so treat departure as a separate journey beyond the downtown day.
