Porto Metro: Lines and Stops for Visitors

Porto Metro connects the airport, the main railway station and outlying destinations with central Porto. Trindade is the key station to recognise when changing lines. São Bento brings you closer to the old centre, but not down to the river. Choosing the line letter and the destination on the train board matters because several services share the same tracks.

When to use the metro

Walk between the sights in Porto’s compact centre, using the metro for Porto Airport, Campanhã railway station, Matosinhos and the crossing into Vila Nova de Gaia. These journeys take you beyond the central sightseeing streets, but a metro stop can still leave a slope between you and your destination.

São Bento metro station sits above Ribeira, the waterfront district beside the Douro. The walk to Ribeira is about 850 metres and takes about 10 minutes, heading downhill through the old centre. Allow for the uphill return when planning your way back to the metro, especially with luggage or after a long day on foot. Jardim do Morro, across the river in Gaia, is also a hilltop stop rather than an arrival at the riverside cellars.

Lines A, B, C, E and F share the central corridor through Trindade and Casa da Música. Read both the line letter and the destination board, rather than boarding any train on the shared track: beyond the common stops, the branches lead to different places.

At Trindade, follow the signs to Line D for Aliados, São Bento or Gaia. Line D crosses the Douro on the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge. Jardim do Morro gives you access to the garden and views back towards Porto. Campanhã is the connection for arrivals by mainline train, while Casa da Música serves the concert hall west of the centre.

Matosinhos Sul is the beach stop on Line A, not a stop for the Foz shoreline. Use Matosinhos and Porto’s other beaches to choose between a beach visit here and the coast closer to the Douro mouth.

An airport train is less frequent than trains on the shared central tracks. Leave room for the wait at Aeroporto as well as the ride. First departures belong to the named stations, not to every stop along the line. Senhora da Hora is an intermediate station on Line A.

At Aeroporto, take Line E towards Trindade or Estádio do Dragão, both serving Trindade. The airport station puts you on a direct train to the central interchange, where you can change to Line D towards São Bento or Gaia.

Keep your luggage with you and leave space for other passengers to board. Trindade is north of the old centre, so think about the walk from your arrival station to your accommodation: luggage makes Porto’s slopes more demanding. If you are staying near Ribeira, getting off at São Bento still leaves the downhill walk to the waterfront.

The Blue Andante card is the reusable holder, not the journey itself. Load the appropriate zone category for your trip. Ticket validity starts at the first validation: Z3 allows an hour, and each category above Z4 adds another 15 minutes, up to Z9.

You can transfer between lines and transport modes without using another ticket, provided you stay within the purchased zone limit and validity period. Andante tickets, zones and passes explains how to choose the zones for your destination and whether a broader ticket or pass suits your plans.

Buying, validating and boarding

Do

  • Buy or recharge a Blue Andante card at a station vending machine, with one card per traveller.
  • Validate before travelling and again whenever you change metro lines.
  • Wait for the green light, acceptance sound and confirmation message.
  • Keep your validated card throughout the journey and present it on inspection.

Don’t

  • Share one Blue Andante card between passengers.
  • Treat buying or loading a ticket as validation.
  • Tap a bank card at an ordinary Andante validator.

Direct bank-card payment works only at designated boarding stations and contactless validators. On Line E, these are Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música and Trindade. The participating stops on Lines A, B, C, D and F are Campanhã, Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento and Aliados, according to which line serves the station.

Remove your contactless bank card from your wallet, or use a virtual card, and hold it to the marked validator until acceptance. For a return from Matosinhos Sul or Jardim do Morro, use Andante rather than relying on direct bank-card payment: neither is a participating boarding station.

New Year’s Eve in Porto: Celebrations and Getting Home

Porto’s New Year celebrations offer two quite different evenings: live music and the public countdown on Avenida dos Aliados, or dinner and a ticketed party at Alfândega do Porto. Madeira without a car is worthwhile if you stay in central Funchal and choose outings that fit the buses.
