Scottsdale Bike Rental: Shops, Paths and Riding Rules

Scottsdale’s Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt gives a hired bicycle a purpose beyond getting between Old Town stops. You can ride through Chaparral Park, or start near Scottsdale Waterfront for a canal outing. Choose the vehicle for the path you want to use, especially with electric hire: an e-bike’s class and a scooter’s design affect where you may ride.

When a hire bike makes sense

Hire a bike for a paved-path outing, and walk between nearby Old Town destinations. Scottsdale has useful cycling corridors, but reaching them can involve access roads and crossings rather than continuous traffic-free riding.

A conventional bicycle suits a leisurely path ride. A beach cruiser has an upright riding position, while a hybrid offers a more versatile geared option. Electric assistance helps on longer journeys, and a scooter can suit short trips where its particular vehicle type is permitted. You still need confidence steering and braking, and assistance does not remove exposure to sun or traffic.

Shop hire means collecting a vehicle and keeping it until the agreed return, not unlocking an app-based shared vehicle and ending its trip elsewhere. If luggage makes handling awkward or riding does not suit you, Scottsdale trolley routes offer a public-transport alternative for local journeys.

Bike and scooter hire shops

Bike Emporium on East McDonald Drive hires non-electric beach cruisers and hybrid bicycles. These are straightforward choices for paved riding rather than specialist off-road equipment. Choose a style you can handle comfortably, not simply the most elaborate bike on offer.

Rides N Motion hires e-bikes and two-wheeled Phat electric scooters in McCormick Ranch. Its position makes it a starting point for the ride south through Chaparral Park. The shop opens daily, 9:30am–5pm.

Magnum Bikes provides e-bike hire for an outing towards Scottsdale Waterfront and the Arizona Canal. Rental collection and return hours are Monday–Saturday, 10am–6pm, and Sunday, 11am–4pm. Choose your collection point before deciding how far to ride, because you will need to bring the vehicle back rather than leave it at the end of the path.

From the hire points above, you have two paved outings. The Scottsdale bike path is not one route with a single length: the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt and Arizona Canal are separate corridors, and these rides cover selected stretches.

From Rides N Motion, head south through Chaparral Park to Indian School Park. Chaparral Park’s lake makes a natural place to pause before continuing along the Greenbelt. Allow for shared-path traffic and crossings, and take care on the access roads before reaching the park paths.

From Magnum Bikes, reach Scottsdale Waterfront, then follow the Arizona Canal towards Goldwater Boulevard. The Waterfront gives you a canal-side stopping point, but keep pedestrian access clear when pausing.

Leave time for breaks and the ride back to your hire shop. These paved outings differ from North Scottsdale’s off-road terrain, where surface, equipment and riding skills need a different approach.

Hire costs and collection

VehicleShort hire, roughly 1–2 hoursDay hire
Conventional bicycle$15–$30$30–$60
E-bike$30–$60$60–$120
Electric scooter$30–$70$70–$150

Longer hire periods and higher-powered or specialist vehicles tend towards the upper end of these rounded ranges. Agree the hire period and total charge before taking the vehicle, including whether a lock and helmet are included. A hybrid bicycle’s gears give you options as the effort changes. Use a quiet space near collection to get comfortable with shifting and stopping before joining the route.

Do

  • Choose a frame size and saddle position that let you stop confidently.
  • Inspect tyres and brakes, and practise steering, braking and electric controls before setting off.
  • Arrange a helmet and lock, and agree the return place and time.

Don’t

  • Accept a poor fit or a brake problem because the ride seems short.
  • Try unfamiliar throttle or assistance settings for the first time beside pedestrians.
  • End a shop hire by leaving the vehicle on a path or at a dockless parking spot.

E-bike and scooter riding rules

Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes may use municipal paved shared-use paths, including the Greenbelt, and the paved Arizona Canal path. Class 1 gives pedal assistance up to 20mph. Class 2 can propel you without pedalling up to the same assistance limit.

Electric scooters may use Greenbelt shared-use paths. The canal permission covers stand-up electric mini-scooters. Do not assume that stand-up mini-scooter permission covers a hired Phat scooter: the shop’s two-wheeled design is different.

Bicycles, Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, and electric mini-scooters may use public sidewalks unless posted otherwise. Old Town’s covered sidewalks are private property, and you must not ride on them. Walk your vehicle there and respect posted restrictions elsewhere.

Scottsdale has no general minimum age for electric scooter riding, but riders under 16 need written permission from a parent or guardian. Legal permission and a hire agreement are separate conditions, so the shop may impose its own rider requirements.

Helmets are not legally required for bicycles, e-bikes or electric stand-up scooters. Children must wear them on motorised skateboards and motorised play vehicles. Wear a helmet for your ride regardless of whether the law requires it.

Yield to pedestrians and ride at a safe, controlled speed. Slow down around crossings and busy stretches, and leave entrances and the path clear when you stop. Return a shop-hired vehicle to the agreed collection point.
