Where to Eat in Chattanooga’s Southside

Chattanooga’s Southside gives you several distinct reasons to stop for food around the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Choose the meal first, then the street: a bagel on Market Street, tacos on Rossville Avenue or a seated lunch or dinner along Main Street. Alleia’s Italian cooking and Main Street Meats’ butcher-shop menu make different evenings out, even within the same neighbourhood.

Use the Chattanooga Choo Choo, the historic Terminal Station, as your Southside landmark. Main Street’s converted industrial warehouses and the Main Street Farmers Market help give the district its shape. This selection follows the dining streets around that landmark rather than treating every restaurant south of downtown as equally convenient.

The food allowances cover a bagel with spread, a taco meal or a main dish, depending on the restaurant. The upper end leaves room for a side or a more expensive pasta choice. Drinks, starters and dessert raise the bill, and sales tax is added separately. At table-service restaurants, allow roughly 18–20% of the pre-tax bill for a customary tip.

Reserve a sit-down dinner or group meal when you need a fixed time. For a casual breakfast or taco stop, keep your arrival flexible and leave room for a wait rather than fitting the meal tightly between commitments.

Stay on Main Street for a substantial seated meal, or head south along Market Street or Rossville Avenue when breakfast or tacos suit the occasion. If you want a smaller bite with a drink instead, Chattanooga happy-hour drinks and bites offers a separate selection for that kind of stop.

The FEED Co. Table & Tavern

The FEED Co. Table & Tavern suits a casual seated dinner centred on Short Rib Pot Roast. The beef short-rib dish makes this a substantial meal rather than a quick snack between stops. Start with that main course and decide whether you want additional courses around it, particularly if dinner is the main event of your Southside visit.

FEED is locally owned and suits an informal neighbourhood dinner. It is a mid-priced choice for sitting down without turning the occasion into a formal evening. The tavern setting also makes sense when your group wants food and drinks together.

You will find FEED at 201 West Main Street. Its kitchen serves lunch and dinner, with an earlier start on Sunday and later service on Friday and Saturday. Plan your meal around kitchen service, especially if you are coming after another evening activity.

Alleia

Alleia pairs an Italian pasta dinner with the historic Harrington Building. The building is part of the reason to give the meal an evening of its own, rather than treating it as a stop for food before moving on. Choose from the pasta made in-house each day, letting the changing menu determine the particular dish.

Choose whether you want pasta as your main course or as part of a dinner with other courses. Adding a starter and dessert makes this a longer, more expensive meal, so let your appetite and the evening you have in mind guide the order.

Alleia is at 25 East Main Street. It is an evening restaurant, so plan it as dinner rather than lunch. Give yourself time to sit down and enjoy the building setting alongside the food.

Main Street Meats

Main Street Meats brings a whole-animal butcher-shop approach to lunch and dinner. The restaurant’s menu changes with the available cuts, making the meat itself the reason to eat here. That approach gives you a choice: settle on the burger or explore the cuts available when you sit down.

The Local Beef Burger is the approachable order. It combines bacon and Swiss cheese with house pickles and caramelised onions, and mustard and Duke’s mayonnaise finish it on a wheat bun. Those toppings make it a fully dressed burger rather than a plain patty whose extras you need to build yourself.

If you have come for a particular kind of meat, start your choice with the available cuts instead of assuming the restaurant always serves the same steak.

Main Street Meats is at 217 East Main Street. Restaurant service runs through lunch and dinner, so you can make it your midday meal or return for an evening at the table. Choose the burger for a straightforward meal, or the changing cuts when the butchery is your main interest.

Honey Seed

Honey Seed makes a Montreal-style bagel with cream cheese a simple Southside breakfast. Montreal-style bagels are generally smaller and sweeter than New York-style bagels, with a firm, chewy texture. Cream cheese lets the bagel remain the centre of the meal rather than turning it into a heavily filled sandwich.

Honey Seed’s bagel service extends beyond the morning, so this can also be a lighter meal later in the day. You do not need to organise an early breakfast just to make bagels part of your Southside visit. Keep the order simple when you want something modest before a fuller meal elsewhere.

The restaurant is at 1705 Market Street, Suite 105, south of Main Street. Its bagel-shop identity makes it an inexpensive choice for a food stop, particularly when a bagel and spread are all you want.

Taqueria Jalisco Ania

Taqueria Jalisco Ania is a family-run choice for a casual taco meal. Order carne asada tacos, filled with grilled beef, when you want the filling to lead the order. Tacos let you shape the size of the meal through how many you order, rather than committing to a large main course.

A taco meal fits either a lunch break or an uncomplicated dinner. Start with the tacos when you want a smaller meal, and add extra dishes if you are hungry enough to settle in for longer.

The Ania venue is at 1639 Rossville Avenue, south of Main Street’s frontage. Use the full venue name when arranging to meet someone, so you are both heading to this Rossville Avenue restaurant. Its serving windows cover lunch and dinner on its open days.
