A train to Nashville does not mean an Amtrak train arriving in the city. Nashville’s Amtrak destination code, NVL, is a coach stop. Riverfront Station serves the separate WeGo Star regional railway, while the Tennessee Central Railway Museum runs excursions rather than an intercity arrival service.
If you want rail to form part of your journey, an Amtrak rail-and-coach itinerary can bring you to Nashville. The useful comparison is with a direct coach from your own starting point, including the change, luggage handling and the final journey to your accommodation.
Amtrak, the WeGo Star and excursion trains
Amtrak has no intercity passenger train stopping in Nashville. Its timetable describes NVL as part of a Greyhound-operated Thruway coach service between Nashville and Chicago. If an all-rail arrival is essential, that listing will not meet your needs. If you are willing to finish by coach, it can form part of a rail-and-bus journey.
The WeGo Star connects Riverfront Station in downtown Nashville with Lebanon, Tennessee. It is regional rail, with regular trains on weekdays in the mornings and afternoons, not an Amtrak route into the city from elsewhere in the country. Riverfront is therefore a relevant station for travel along that corridor, not the arrival point for an NVL booking.

The Tennessee Central Railway Museum offers themed excursions on restored vintage trains. Trips run east from Nashville towards places such as Lebanon and Watertown, sometimes with a stopover. Wine-tasting and seasonal holiday rides are outings to enjoy after reaching Nashville, rather than transport for getting there.
Choosing a rail-and-coach itinerary instead of a direct coach
Pros
- Useful when an Amtrak train serves your origin and the connecting coach completes a journey you otherwise could not make by rail.
- Worth choosing if the complete ticket price and elapsed time suit you better than the direct coach from the same origin.
Cons
- The rail-to-coach change adds luggage handling and an interchange to the journey.
- Waiting between services can outweigh a faster train segment.
- A cheaper ticket may cease to be the cheaper journey once the transfer to your accommodation is included.
Rail-and-bus bookings to NVL
- Amtrak destination
- Nashville, TN (NVL)
- Published coach service
- Daily Thruway service, Nashville–Chicago
NVL can be booked as the destination of an Amtrak rail-and-bus itinerary. The Nashville station listing identifies FlixBus as the connecting coach operator, while the route timetable describes the Thruway service as Greyhound-operated. These descriptions concern the coach leg, not a passenger train into Nashville.
Read the offered journey segment by segment. The published rail-to-coach interchange is at Indianapolis. Identify where the train ends, where you board the coach and how the connection fits the rest of your journey. A destination code alone does not tell you which parts are on rails.
Compare the complete price and elapsed time from your actual origin with a direct coach from that same point. Include the interval between services, any separate journey to the departure station and the transfer from the Nashville arrival stop to your accommodation. With heavy luggage, the extra handling at the change may matter more than the appeal of travelling part of the way by train.
One purchase does not by itself establish protection for every third-party connection. Keep the distinction between a dedicated Thruway connection and independently arranged onward travel in mind when choosing the journey.
Nearby Amtrak stations
For an all-rail alternative to the NVL booking, Memphis Central Station and Birmingham are active Amtrak intercity stations, but either leaves you with a separate road journey to Nashville. Neither is a train arrival in Nashville itself.
There is no single established closest active intercity station to Nashville. Geographical proximity and the easiest complete journey are different considerations. A station closer on a map may be less helpful if reaching it requires a detour or its onward transport does not suit your arrival.
Choose a nearby station only with the onward road transfer included in your plan. An independently arranged coach, hire car or lift adds its own cost and timing requirements. Compare that complete journey with a rail-and-coach booking that actually ends at NVL.
The NVL coach arrival stop
At the end of the NVL rail-and-coach journey, you arrive at Nashville’s Greyhound station, not Riverfront Station. The stop is also listed as Greyhound Shop. Use this coach arrival point when arranging your onward journey, rather than the WeGo Star terminus.
- Name
- Greyhound Shop
- Location
- 709 Rep. John Lewis Way S, Nashville, TN 37203 Maps
With heavy luggage, a taxi or ride-hail may be more practical than walking to your accommodation. Base that choice on your accommodation’s location and how comfortably you can carry your bags. Keep its name and address ready so that the onward journey ends at the right entrance.
Arrival at the coach station is not arrival at your accommodation. Allow for collecting your belongings and arranging the final transfer when deciding whether the complete journey suits your plans.
