Verona Tourist Tax: Rates, Exemptions and Payment

If you stay overnight within the Municipality of Verona, you pay tourist tax unless you qualify for an exemption. Your bill depends on the accommodation’s classification, your taxable nights and each guest’s eligibility. Day visitors do not pay this overnight-stay charge. You pay the accommodation manager or responsible rental-payment collector and receive proof of payment.

2026 standard tariffs, per person per overnight stay

The charge applies year-round to overnight guests in accommodation within Verona’s municipal territory, including hotels, other accommodation establishments, tourist and short-term rentals, and tourism accommodation linked to agricultural activities, unless an exemption applies. Day visitors do not owe this charge. Use the property’s official classification, not its booking-site rating, to choose the tariff.

Hotel villages, tourist-hotel residences, historic hotel residences and dispersed hotels use the hotel classifications. The schedule also distinguishes complementary accommodation, including tourist lodgings, furnished tourist apartments and holiday homes, by its two to five winged lions, the regional classification symbols, or as unclassified or former category I, II or III. Equipped temporary parking areas are classified by star level.

Taxable-night limit
Four overnight stays per person per month
Consecutive stay spanning adjacent months
Same cap for stays of up to 30 consecutive days

Changing accommodation does not restart the cap. Give the next manager receipts for tax already paid and complete Form D so earlier taxable nights are recognised across properties.

Calculate the bill by multiplying the applicable nightly tariff by taxable nights for each liable guest, then adding the guest totals. For example, two adults without a reduction staying three nights in a three-star hotel pay €21. Apply exemptions and reductions guest by guest before calculating the final amount.

Exemptions and reduced rates

  • Registered residents of the Municipality of Verona are exempt.
  • Children are exempt until the day before their 15th birthday.
  • Youth-hostel guests and guests in accommodation managed by ONLUS, the legally defined non-profit organisations of social utility, are exempt. This is not a blanket exemption for all non-profit providers.
  • Patients receiving therapy or attending medical visits at public or private health facilities within Verona municipality are exempt, together with one accompanying person.
  • One person assisting each hospital patient admitted to a public or private facility in Verona is exempt. For a patient under 18 who is admitted or awaiting admission, up to two parents or delegated companions qualify.
  • Guests from their 15th birthday until the day before their 26th birthday receive a 20% reduction.
  • Guests qualify for a 20% reduction from their 70th birthday.
  • Group members receive a 20% reduction when a single booking covers more than 25 people and includes a named rooming list of at least 26 guests. Payment may be centralised or individual if the organiser authorises or provides for it.

Submit exemption self-certification to the accommodation manager. For the medical-treatment and hospital-assistance cases, use Form B, identifying the health facility and the treatment or admission period.

Reductions cannot be combined: a guest qualifying on both age and group grounds receives one reduction, not both. For an eligible guest, multiply their standard tax total by 0.8. Assess each person separately rather than applying one guest’s eligibility to the whole room.

Paying the tax and keeping a receipt

Pay the accommodation manager or responsible short-term rental-payment collector when paying for your stay, and no later than departure. The collector must give you a receipt for the tax.

A separate named receipt records your details, stay period, number of taxable guests and total tax. Alternatively, the amount can appear on the fiscal receipt or invoice as an operation outside the scope of VAT. If a booking line shows an amount payable at the property rather than already collected, allow for that separate payment alongside your accommodation bill.

Do

  • Match the booking’s tourist-tax line to the category, eligible guests and taxable nights used in your calculation.
  • Keep the receipt showing the tourist tax paid.

Don’t

  • Treat the advertised room price as proof that the tax is included.
  • Pay an apparently duplicate tax request without asking the collector to reconcile it with your payment breakdown.

Airbnb bookings and separate charges

Automatic Airbnb collection of Verona’s tourist tax has not been activated. Accommodation managers continue collecting and remitting it under the usual arrangements, so a separate request from your host can be legitimate.

Use your booking payment breakdown to distinguish a tax estimate from an amount already paid. Ask the host to identify the tax amount collected and who collected it. If your breakdown shows a paid tax line, ask for reconciliation before paying again.

An intermediary handling short-term rental payments is responsible for collecting the tax, issuing a receipt and remitting it, subject to the municipality’s arrangements. Verona’s municipal tax-management portal is for accommodation managers to remit collected tax. It is not a guest checkout service.

Incorrect bills and unpaid tax

Ask the collector to explain or correct a duplicate or miscalculated bill. Send the booking breakdown and payment receipt, identifying the accommodation category, guest eligibility or taxable-night calculation you believe is wrong. Keep these documents with the reply.

Provider penalties and interest for late, partial or missing remittance are not a separate guest fine. The regulation specifies no separate monetary penalty for guest non-payment, but that does not cancel the tax owed.

For unresolved rate or eligibility enquiries, contact Verona’s Tourist Tax Office at impostasoggiorno@comune.verona.it or +39 045 8079578. Office visits are by appointment, arranged by phone or email.
