Where to Have Coffee in Strasbourg: Five Cafés

A coffee break in Strasbourg can mean a light-roasted filter coffee between shops, a cappuccino beside the river or a longer pause in a community café. Choose the drink and neighbourhood first, then decide whether you want to sit for a while. L’Escabeau d’Omnino, Coffee Stub, Oh My Goodness Café, Café Bretelles and Les Compotes offer five distinct reasons to stop.

These are independent choices, not a café crawl. The selection reaches from the historic centre into Krutenau and Neudorf. Les Compotes is a time-limited option because it has announced its closure.

The rounded budgets allow for your drink size and sweet accompaniment. For a short stop, espresso keeps the order simple, but for a longer pause, choose a café where you want to sit.

Drop in for a drink rather than treating the break as a booked meal. Ask about a seat before ordering if sitting matters to you. For a larger group, arrange space with the café rather than assuming adjacent tables will be free. Les Compotes belongs on your shortlist only before its announced closure.

L’Escabeau d’Omnino

L’Escabeau d’Omnino is the choice for exploring Omnino’s light-roast profiles. The café-boutique serves coffee roasted by Omnino itself, so your cup gives you a direct introduction to the roaster’s approach. Look for a V60 filter coffee if you want to concentrate on the coffee rather than milk. When choosing your coffee, tell the staff whether you prefer fruitier or gentler flavours and ask which of Omnino’s coffees would suit you. That gives your visit a focus beyond simply stopping for caffeine.

Rue des Drapiers places the stop among the centre’s shopping streets. It fits a break between browsing and sightseeing without making the coffee an outing to a different neighbourhood. On weekdays, make this an afternoon stop rather than an early-morning coffee.

Coffee Stub

Coffee Stub suits a waterside break with a cappuccino and a piece of house-made cake. Its specialty-coffee offer gives you a reason to stop for the drink as well as the setting. Choose it when you want to make a coffee break part of a riverside outing.

The café is on quai des Pêcheurs. Quai des Bateliers belongs to the wider riverside setting, not the café’s address: its riverfront makes a useful continuation if you want to explore the centre after your break. Keep the cake optional, depending on whether you want a drink between sights or a more substantial seated pause.

Oh My Goodness Café

Oh My Goodness Café offers a spacious indoor room where you can sit with coffee without ordering a meal. On rue de la Première Armée, it is a community café built around meeting people, discovering interests and discussing ideas. That purpose makes it a good choice when the break is about spending time together, not just getting a drink.

V60 filter coffee is on the drinks menu. Pair it with a scone, the English pastry on the menu, if you want something sweet alongside a black coffee. Together with the spacious room, this gives you a reason to settle in for a longer seated pause.

The café’s community life includes opportunities to share your passions, help others and try volunteering. You can simply come for coffee, though: joining an activity is not a condition of using the seating. Monday is a volunteer-day afternoon opening, so do not plan a morning coffee here then.

Café Bretelles in Krutenau

Café Bretelles on rue de Zurich is the Krutenau choice for a Mokxa espresso. This is the branch to choose when your sightseeing has taken you away from the cathedral’s immediate surroundings and into the neighbourhood. Espresso appears on its drinks menu, making a small black coffee a straightforward order rather than a reason to sit down for a full meal.

You can stay longer if you want something sweet alongside your espresso. The rue de Zurich location is the important distinction when finding this Café Bretelles branch. On Sundays, coffee service runs from 09:00 to 17:00.

Les Compotes in Neudorf

Les Compotes offers a public café break in Neudorf without requiring coworking access. Order a flat white made with coffee roasted by Mokxa. It is a reason to visit for the cup itself, even if you have no work to do.

The café seating is open to everyone, while the separate coworking access is for workspace users, such as office or meeting-room renters. You can therefore use the café for an ordinary seated pause rather than buying access to a desk.

Rue de Sélestat puts the stop in Neudorf rather than the historic centre. The neighbourhood’s Place du Marché is a focus for everyday shopping, giving a coffee here a different context from a break among central monuments. Make this a neighbourhood outing if you already want to explore Neudorf, rather than a detour solely to collect another café.
