Lunch in Savannah: Quick Bites and Casual Meals

A lunch break in Savannah’s Historic District can mean a sandwich near Ellis Square, a pub meal on West Jones Street or waffle-fry nachos close to the riverfront. Choose by the food you want and the time you have to sit, rather than treating every casual restaurant as a quick stop.

Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery and Urban Deli suit counter ordering, while Crystal Beer Parlor offers table service and Treylor Park has patio seating at its East Bay Street branch. These four stops give you distinct lunch orders without turning the break into a city-wide restaurant search.

Treylor ParkEast Bay StreetNachos Grande$20–3545–75 minutes

These rounded budgets allow for the featured order, a soft drink, tax and a customary tip, with more room for tipping at a seated meal. Alcohol, another dish or bakery extras raise the total. Allow the estimated lunch times for ordering and eating, and leave extra time if there is a queue.

Counter ordering suits a shorter break, but a queue can still slow lunch down. Give a seated meal room for ordering, eating and paying. Walk in with some flexibility about when you eat, and groups should establish whether everyone can sit together before committing to an order.

Goose Feathers puts lunch beside Ellis Square, at the Barnard Street side of this part of the Historic District. If being beside the waterfront matters more than keeping the break short, meals on and near River Street offer a location-led alternative.

Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery

Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery’s hot salmon BLT gives the familiar bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich a more substantial centre: pan-seared salmon with a special mustard sauce. Choose it when you want a hot sandwich rather than a full table-service lunch.

Goose Feathers also makes pies, cakes and pastries, so you can follow your sandwich with something sweet. Its bread-making includes ciabatta baked from scratch and fresh French bread.

Order at the counter, then sit down while your food is brought to your table. That keeps the ordering straightforward without requiring you to stand waiting for the finished plate. Treat it as a seated sandwich break if you want to enjoy the hot filling, rather than assuming counter service means eating on the move.

On Barnard Street beside Ellis Square, Goose Feathers fits naturally into a pause around the square. Finish eating before resuming your walk, or make the square your next stop after the cafe.

Urban Deli

Urban Deli’s Brie-and-walnut croissant sandwich is the choice for a sweet-savoury lunch: melted Brie, candied walnuts, honey, olive oil and rocket, called arugula on the menu. The cheese-and-walnut filling is the reason to choose this sandwich. Honey adds sweetness, while the rocket gives the rich cheese and croissant a peppery contrast.

The sandwich costs $12 before a drink, tax or tip. It is an inexpensive starting point for lunch if you keep the order to the sandwich, rather than adding several extras.

Order at the counter, then find a seat or take your food to go. Seating is limited, and the deli can feel cramped during the lunch rush even when the line moves quickly. Arriving before the rush improves your chance of sitting down. If your priority is carrying on with your day, takeaway avoids making an available table part of the plan.

Urban Deli is on Habersham Street in the eastern Historic District. That location makes it a useful sandwich stop when your sightseeing already brings you to this side of the centre.

Crystal Beer Parlor

Crystal Beer Parlor’s shrimp and grits is a lunch to sit down for. Grits, a ground-maize porridge, form the base for shrimp served with a red-pepper and andouille sausage cream sauce, with cornbread alongside. The sausage cream sauce makes this a rich, substantial main, rather than a light seafood lunch.

The dish costs $27.50 before drinks, tax and tip. Start with the main and decide whether you want anything else rather than automatically adding a side.

Crystal Beer Parlor first opened as a restaurant in 1933, after William “Blocko” and Connie Manning bought the former grocery store in the early 1930s. Its origins in a grocery store are part of the historic pub’s character.

Take a table for a served lunch, or choose bar seating if you prefer. A server takes your order and brings the food, so let this be a proper pause rather than a counter purchase to squeeze between sights. Its West Jones Street location places that pause in the western Historic District, with Jones Street ready for a walk afterwards.

Treylor Park

Treylor Park on East Bay Street takes Nachos Grande in a different direction: waffle fries replace tortilla chips. Pickles, fried chicken, bacon, cheddar and chive ranch build the dish into a loaded comfort-food order. Balsamic gastrique, a sweet-sour balsamic sauce, adds another contrast to the fried chicken, cheese and creamy dressing.

Choose this for a substantial comfort-food lunch, with a forkful of fries and chicken rather than tortilla chips to dip. The pickles and sweet-sour sauce balance the richer toppings.

The outdoor patio gives you an open-air seating option for lunch. Leave enough time to enjoy the food rather than treating the restaurant as a grab-and-go stop. The East Bay Street branch is near the riverfront, so it fits a break before or after time by the river. Head to this branch when you want the location and dish described here.
