Best Restaurants in Lisbon for Different Meals

A shellfish supper at Cervejaria Ramiro and a long tasting menu at Belcanto ask for very different evenings. Choose by what you want to eat and how long you want to sit, rather than treating one restaurant as Lisbon’s universal must-eat. The neighbourhood, menu format and likely bill will narrow the choice before you take a seat.

For shellfish, choose Cervejaria Ramiro; for Portuguese classics, Solar dos Presuntos. Tasca da Esquina suits sharing plates, Taberna da Rua das Flores offers a changing board, and BAHR is the river-facing choice if you secure the terrace. Eleven pairs a longer menu with a park outlook, while Belcanto suits a tasting-menu celebration. There is no universal must-eat restaurant: pick the occasion and order that suit you.

Arrange a table for a longer dinner and ask specifically for BAHR’s terrace if the river view matters, but a request does not guarantee that seat. If you want a counter snack rather than a seated meal, try Lisbon street food for a quick bite.

Cervejaria Ramiro: shellfish near Intendente

Cervejaria Ramiro is a marisqueira, a Portuguese seafood house, near Intendente, built around fresh shellfish rather than a multi-course tasting menu. Order the clams Bulhão Pato or the garlic prawns if you want a named preparation instead of picking seafood by appearance. The clams come as a portion on the menu, while the small Camarão Espinho prawns are listed by 100 g. Read the unit beside the particular item before ordering, since a fuller shellfish selection will cost more.

Its restaurant service runs from lunchtime into the evening, with a shorter Sunday service. The room is a choice for a dedicated seafood meal, not simply a stop for a quick drink. If you have a fixed dinner time in mind, plan around the restaurant’s seated service rather than the separate takeaway window.

Solar dos Presuntos: Portuguese classics

Solar dos Presuntos, on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, is a choice for a traditional Portuguese meal with a substantial main dish. Look for açorda de lavagante, lobster in a bread-based seafood dish, rather than assuming that every seafood açorda is the same order. The restaurant has served diners since 1974. It is the kind of address to choose when sitting down for lunch or dinner is part of the day’s plan.

There is a break between its lunch and dinner services, so a late afternoon arrival is not the same as a dinner booking. Expect a fuller bill if you add starters, dessert or wine to the lobster dish. Rua das Portas de Santo Antão is the street to use when locating the entrance.

Tasca da Esquina: small plates in Campo de Ourique

Tasca da Esquina in Campo de Ourique makes contemporary Portuguese small plates a good reason to linger over lunch or dinner. Try bacalhau à Brás, salt cod with shredded potato and egg, or oven-baked octopus with roasted tomato, sweet potato and almonds. Both are listed on its menu, so you can build a meal around a familiar cod dish or choose the richer octopus plate.

Sharing several dishes lets you taste more of the menu, but it also changes what each person pays. The table’s range is a starting point for a modest meal rather than a fixed set-menu charge. Campo de Ourique is away from the Chiado restaurant cluster, making Tasca a deliberate neighbourhood choice rather than an interchangeable central stop.

Taberna da Rua das Flores: changing plates

Taberna da Rua das Flores is a small Chiado tavern for a meal shaped by what the market offers that day. Choose your plates from the changing board when you arrive rather than planning around a fixed signature order. Oysters with seaweed or goat-cheese brûlée with figs illustrate the kind of dishes associated with the place, but neither is a guaranteed choice on a given visit.

The address is Rua das Flores, in Chiado: use the full street name when finding it. Because the board changes, the best way to plan your spend is to decide how many plates you want to share before adding drinks. It is a good choice if discovering the day’s dishes matters more than securing one particular recipe.

BAHR: dinner with a Tagus view

BAHR, beside Praça Luís de Camões, is a dinner choice when looking over the Tagus is central to the occasion. Ask for a seat on the Terraço, the terrace identified with the river view, because a booking elsewhere in the restaurant does not promise the same outlook. Look for grilled squid with greens, or finish with farófias, a Portuguese dessert made with poached egg whites.

The terrace makes BAHR a river-facing alternative to Eleven’s park outlook, rather than simply another long dinner. Around Praça Luís de Camões, the Bairro Alto streets give you somewhere to wander before or after the meal.

Eleven: dinner above Eduardo VII Park

Eleven sits in Amália Rodrigues Garden above Eduardo VII Park, with a dining-room panorama across the park and Lisbon. Choose between the tasting menu and à la carte dining according to how much of the evening you want to devote to dinner. The tasting format is the reason to choose Eleven if a sequence of courses appeals more than a single named dish.

This is a city-and-park outlook from the dining room, distinct from BAHR’s Tagus-facing terrace. The garden’s position above the park gives the meal its setting; it is worth arriving with time to appreciate that view rather than treating dinner as a quick stop between sights. Sunday is not an option for dinner, so choose another evening for this restaurant.

Belcanto: a celebratory tasting menu

Belcanto in Chiado is a strong choice for a celebratory tasting menu, especially if you want contemporary Portuguese cooking at a restaurant with two Michelin stars. Executive chef José Avillez leads its kitchen. Look for grilled red mullet with squid textures and green beans among the named dishes on the tasting menu, because it gives a more useful sense of the cooking than the award alone.

A Michelin-starred restaurant is not automatically the right restaurant for every Lisbon meal. Belcanto suits a long special-occasion dinner when you want the succession of dishes to be the event, but for shellfish or a more casual meal, choose by appetite instead. Dinner service is on the same days as its weekday and Saturday lunch service, rather than every evening of the week.
