Cheap Eats in Bologna: Six Filling Budget Meals

Allow up to about €18 per person for one filling dish with water or a soft drink, rather than a multi-course meal. In central Bologna, that can mean a falafel pita at Ciao Kebab, homemade pasta at Osteria dell’Orsa or a mortadella-filled sandwich. Alcohol, extra food and any separate table-service charge sit outside that allowance.

These six choices cover the university area, the streets north of Piazza Maggiore and Pratello. Choose by the food you want and whether you need a seat: a takeaway sandwich and a bowl of pasta at a shared table make quite different lunch breaks.

Bologna need not be expensive if you make one substantial order your meal. The lower end of these ranges suits a simpler order with water, while a soft drink or a more elaborate sandwich filling moves spending upwards. A second dish, dessert or beer changes the calculation more than choosing between these neighbourhoods.

For a quick walk-up lunch, takeaway keeps the meal informal and avoids needing a restaurant table. If you want to sit, choose a venue that offers on-site eating before joining its queue. For a group, agree on takeaway or a seated meal first. Do not assume a counter venue can accommodate everyone together. Treat these as walk-up options rather than building your day around a reserved table.

Bread and conventional pasta are central to these orders. If they are unsuitable for you, the separate selection of gluten-free pasta, pizza and takeaway gives you different meal choices and preparation considerations.

Ciao Kebab

Ciao Kebab in the university area makes the Falafesta pita a useful choice when you want a substantial meat-free lunch without ordering several dishes. The warm pita contains falafel, homemade hummus and fresh vegetables, with yoghurt sauce that you can leave out. Order the Falafesta without yoghurt sauce if you do not want that dairy topping.

Freshly prepared house-made sauces give the sandwich its own character alongside the hummus, rather than leaving the filling to do all the work.

The Via Centotrecento 24 branch offers both takeaway and seating, so you can choose between carrying lunch away and stopping to eat. Food service runs Sunday–Thursday 12:30–23:00 and Friday–Saturday 12:00–23:30. Its long service window makes it useful when lunch has slipped into the afternoon.

Osteria dell’Orsa

Osteria dell’Orsa is the seated pasta choice in the university area. Order its homemade tagliatelle with ragù, the Bolognese meat sauce: the broad ribbons make a single-course meal that puts local pasta-making at the centre of lunch, without requiring a starter and a main course.

Expect an informal shared-table meal, not necessarily a private table. The large wooden tables can place you alongside guests you do not know. That arrangement suits a straightforward pasta stop, but it is worth choosing deliberately if you want a quiet dinner for two.

The osteria is at Via Mentana 1. Food service is continuous from 12:30–23:00, making it a useful seated option for an afternoon meal as well as lunch or dinner.

Mò! Mortadella Lab

Mò! Mortadella Lab makes a mortadella sandwich the point of the meal, not a fallback between sightseeing stops. Mortadella is Bologna’s finely textured cooked pork sausage, usually studded with pieces of fat. In bread, it gives you a substantial cold filling without needing a hot lunch. The business has Gambero Rosso’s Tre Spicchi, or Three Wedges, recognition in its Street Food guide.

Choose the Via de’ Monari branch for takeaway, not a seated meal. At Via de’ Monari 1/c, north of Piazza Maggiore, there is no seating. Decide where you will eat before ordering, especially if you need somewhere to rest.

The branch serves Tuesday–Saturday 11:30–21:30 and Sunday 11:30–18:00, so Sunday suits lunch or an early bite rather than dinner. The rosetta roll with mortadella, squacquerone soft cheese and chopped pistachios belongs to the Via San Vitale 4/F menu; do not arrive at Monari expecting that particular combination.

Ragù

Ragù on Via Goito turns Bolognese meat sauce into a sandwich filling. Choose the Panino al ragù antica ricetta, the traditional-recipe ragù bun, for sauce in soft bread rather than over pasta. It is a compact way to make ragù the centre of a quick lunch, distinct from the shop’s pasta and other comfort-food dishes.

The Via Goito 9b shop offers both takeaway and on-site eating. A filled bun is convenient to carry, but stopping to eat also lets you enjoy the saucy filling without having to manage it while walking.

Lunch service runs 12:00–15:00. Evening service is Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday 19:00–22:00, and Friday–Saturday 19:00–23:00. Aim for a meal window rather than an afternoon snack stop: the break between lunch and dinner matters even at the weekend.

Pasta Fresca Naldi

Pasta Fresca Naldi is the Pratello choice for handmade Emilian pasta without a restaurant meal. Order pumpkin tortelloni with butter and sage: the large filled pasta parcels pair a sweet pumpkin filling with a simple dressing that leaves it at the centre of the dish.

Ask for a cooked takeaway portion if you want lunch now. The workshop also sells uncooked fresh pasta, which is useful only if you have somewhere to prepare it. A ready-to-eat portion gives you the workshop’s pasta-making in a form suited to a visitor’s lunch break.

At Via del Pratello 69/C, plan around the cooked-food windows shown below. This is primarily a daytime meal choice, but Friday and Saturday also offer dinner service. Choose your eating spot before collecting the hot pasta, rather than treating the workshop as a sit-down restaurant.

Indegno – La Crescentina 2.0

Indegno – La Crescentina 2.0 on Pratello puts mortadella into crescentina, Bolognese fried bread. Choose the Indegna, filled with Artigianquality mortadella, as a substantial filled order rather than a small unfilled fried snack. The lighter dough is part of the venue’s approach to this traditional bread, while the filling keeps the order firmly savoury.

The dough is vegan and lard-free, but the mortadella-filled Indegna is not vegan. Indegno also fries without lard, distinguishing the preparation from versions that use it.

The Via del Pratello 84/A branch offers takeaway and on-site eating. Lunch and dinner are separate services, so choose the meal window before setting off, particularly if you want a late lunch.
