Where to Drink Craft Beer in Cologne

For a seated craft beer in Cologne, choose by the kind of beer stop you want. Craftbeer Corner Coeln offers rotating independent draught beers in the Old Town. Bierlager Bierbar combines a Südstadt bar with a bottle shop. Braustelle serves its own beer alongside food in Ehrenfeld. Each has indoor seating, so the choice is about where to settle with a drink, not simply where to buy bottles.

These are specialist beer bars and a small brewpub, rather than a selection of traditional Kölsch houses. The Old Town option suits a drink during central sightseeing. Südstadt puts the emphasis on browsing bottles as well as taps. Ehrenfeld suits an evening with house beer and food.

The estimates cover one standard beer, not a tasting or meal. Allow more for a stronger or imported beer, especially a larger bottle. The serving size matters as much as the style when comparing prices.

Ordering and seating

Kölsch is Cologne’s familiar local beer, a pale, top-fermented beer traditionally served in slender glasses. At these venues, choose from the beer list available that day: guest taps change, while Braustelle’s house beers are brewed locally.

Tell the bar staff whether you prefer something lighter or hop-led. Ask for a smaller serving where offered if you want to try an unfamiliar beer without committing to a large glass.

For a casual drink with a small party, ask for seats on arrival. Contact the venue ahead if your group needs seats together, specifying whether you want drinks only or food too. If you prefer to eat elsewhere, restaurants for a separate meal in Cologne give you a food-first choice before or after your beer stop.

Craftbeer Corner Coeln

Craftbeer Corner Coeln is the choice for independent German and international beers across 15 taps. Its draught selection includes breweries such as SinghBräu, DEYA Brewing Company and Hop Hooligans, making the tap list the focus of a visit rather than a single permanent house beer.

Bonner Light Lager gives you a lighter option if it is available. Otherwise, describe that preference at the bar and choose from the beers pouring that day. The breadth of the selection also makes this a useful stop when people at the same table want different kinds of beer.

Opened in 2016 as Cologne’s first dedicated craft-beer taproom, Craftbeer Corner Coeln is on Martinstraße in the Old Town. You can try beers from several independent breweries while staying at the same table.

Large shared tables provide indoor seating, though free seats become scarce when the bar is busy. Ask for a seat before ordering if sitting down is essential. The evening-led service suits a drink after sightseeing rather than a morning stop.

Bierlager Bierbar

Bierlager Bierbar makes sense when you want to choose a chilled bottle and drink it on site. Its 70 chilled bottled beers are available to enjoy in the Südstadt bar-and-shop, with a changing selection that spans pale ales, IPAs, stouts, porters and Belgian beers.

The bottled IPA suggested above is one way into that range. If hops are not what you want, ask about a stout or porter instead. There are also changing craft beers on draught, so you can choose a freshly poured glass without making the bottle shop your main reason for visiting.

Seats in the main shop area and a back room let you stay with your beer rather than treat the visit as a takeaway purchase. Ask for a bottle to drink here, so the staff know you want the chilled selection and a seat.

Bierlager also advertises tastings and brewery tap takeovers. These add a beer-focused reason to choose the bar if you enjoy exploring a brewery’s range rather than ordering just a familiar style.

Braustelle

Braustelle is for house-brewed beer with the working brewing kettle in the guest room. Brewing in Ehrenfeld began here in 2001, and the equipment remains part of the room where you sit and drink. The small brewpub brings the brewing and restaurant sides of a visit together.

Helios is an Ehrenfelder Wiess, an unfiltered local beer. Ehrenfelder Alt is another freshly tapped house choice. Both are served subject to availability, so choose between the house beers pouring when you arrive rather than expecting every one to be available.

Food gives you a reason to stay beyond a single glass. Beer goulash makes a substantial meal, while homemade malt-residue bread uses the spent grain left after brewing. The bread connects a simple snack to the brewpub’s main activity, without requiring you to order a full meal.

Vegetarians can order cheese spaetzle, the soft egg noodles served with cheese, or choose from other warm vegetarian dishes including falafel and oven-roasted vegetables. That makes Braustelle a workable food-and-beer stop for a party with different eating preferences.

There is indoor seating for drinking as well as eating. In this small venue, seats become harder to find when it is busy, so say whether you want just beer or dinner when asking for a table.
