Where to Eat in Cologne: Six Restaurants to Try

A plate of Rhineland cooking at Peters Brauhaus and a rooftop sharing meal at NENI offer two quite different ways to eat in Cologne. The choice extends beyond the Old Town: schnitzel in the Latin Quarter, seasonal cooking and burgers in Südstadt, and pork chops across the Rhine in Deutz. Choose for the meal you want, then the neighbourhood and service time: some of these restaurants suit lunch as well as dinner, while others only serve in the evening.

Haus MüllerSüdstadtBasque free-range chicken leg, when available€40–55None
Die Fette KuhSüdstadtCheeseburger€20–30Tuesday
LommerzheimDeutzPork chop€25–40Tuesday

These rounded budgets cover a main and a drink, or your share of a complete sharing meal at NENI. Extra dishes and additional alcoholic drinks raise the bill, and at the burger restaurant, sides and patty size also affect spending.

Bei Oma Kleinmann and Haus Müller are dinner choices, not lunch stops. Peters Brauhaus and NENI serve both meals. Die Fette Kuh serves lunch on its opening days except Monday, when service starts in the evening. Lommerzheim has separate daytime and evening sittings.

Reserve ahead for a fixed-time restaurant dinner or a group meal, with Lommerzheim the walk-in exception. On arrival, ask staff for a table rather than assuming every empty seat is free. In traditional Cologne brauhauses, sharing long tables with other guests is customary, so a seat beside another party need not mean you are in the wrong place.

Peters Brauhaus

Peters Brauhaus pairs Rhineland cooking with a distinctive stained-glass dome: look up as well as at the menu. Its central setting makes a substantial sit-down meal easy to combine with time around the Old Town, without turning lunch into a separate outing.

Order Himmel un Äd for a traditional sweet-and-savoury plate. The name means “heaven and earth”, and here the dish brings fried black pudding and onions together with stewed apples and mashed potatoes. The apples and potatoes explain the name, while the black pudding makes this a meat-focused choice rather than a light vegetable dish.

Kölsch is Cologne’s local beer and a natural drink to pair with the meal. Choose Peters for the regional food and the dining room, not simply for a beer stop: the kitchen and restaurant have different service windows.

NENI

NENI gives an Eastern Mediterranean sharing meal a rooftop setting in the Friesenviertel. The dining room is on the top level of its building at Im Klapperhof, making the setting part of the reason to choose it for a sit-down lunch or dinner.

Start with hummus, a chickpea dip, and pita, a flatbread. The menu offers both NENI’s Hummus and a Hummus Trio. Order pita separately alongside the dip. The trio suits a table that wants to sample more than one version, while a single hummus leaves more room for other dishes.

The food is intended for sharing. Build the meal from several dishes for the table rather than treating the dip and bread as a complete dinner. Agree on the order together so that everyone gets a share of the dishes they want. The number of plates, and whether you add further rounds, matters more to the final bill than simply dividing one starter.

Bei Oma Kleinmann

Bei Oma Kleinmann makes schnitzel the focus of an evening in the Latin Quarter. Schnitzel is a breaded, fried cutlet. Here, the choice includes meat and non-meat versions, with sauces giving you another way to tailor the plate.

Choose the celeriac schnitzel for a vegetarian meal in a mixed-menu restaurant. It gives the vegetable the breaded-cutlet treatment rather than relegating meat-free diners to side dishes. The restaurant has also offered veal schnitzel, which is worth looking for when available. The range makes this a useful dinner choice when your party has different food preferences but wants to eat together.

For an entirely meat-free venue rather than a vegetarian dish on a mixed menu, the selection of vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Cologne offers a different starting point.

The restaurant is on Zülpicher Straße. Plan it as the dinner itself rather than arriving towards the end of an evening out: food service ends before the dining room closes.

Haus Müller

Haus Müller offers seasonal contemporary German cooking with a patio beside a small park. It suits an evening when you want the meal to take centre stage, with a full main course and room to linger, rather than a quick bite between sights.

Look for the Basque free-range chicken leg among the large plates. Haus Müller buys fresh regional ingredients and changes its menu accordingly, so choose from the seasonal dishes available when you sit down.

The patio adds an outdoor option to the restaurant’s setting in Südstadt. If that is part of your reason for coming, ask for outdoor seating when arranging your dinner. Otherwise, choose it for the cooking rather than relying on a particular table.

Food service begins with the evening opening. Head to Achterstraße for dinner, and let the changing menu guide any additional courses: starters, dessert and more drinks can turn a main-course meal into a longer, more expensive evening.

Die Fette Kuh

Die Fette Kuh makes hand-made beef patties the centre of a casual seated burger meal on Bonner Straße. Choose it when you want a straightforward main in Südstadt rather than a multi-course dinner.

Order the cheeseburger and choose your cheese and patty size. The menu offers 120 g and 200 g patties, dressed with tomato, red onion rings, lettuce, pickles and the house “Fat Cow” sauce. The cheese choice lets you vary the burger without moving away from the recommended order.

Decide on sides separately rather than assuming the burger is a complete set meal. A larger patty, sides and your drink choice all change what you spend. For lunch, the main scheduling exception is Monday’s later opening: keep this as an evening meal that day, rather than arriving hungry at midday.

Lommerzheim

Lommerzheim is a reason to make a meal of your time in Deutz, on the east bank of the Rhine. Its substantial pork chop comes with a choice of sides, and the traditional pub setting suits a meat-focused local lunch or dinner.

Choose your side to go with the pork chop. Kölsch is served here too, giving you a local beer to accompany the meal.

Table reservations are generally not accepted, so arrive prepared to wait if it is busy. Leave some flexibility around the meal instead of attaching it to a tight appointment. For a group, the walk-in approach makes that flexibility particularly useful.

Lommerzheim closes for an afternoon break between its daytime and evening service. Choose one sitting rather than expecting a late lunch to run straight into dinner. Public holidays follow the Sunday service pattern, including the earlier evening finish, so use that window when planning a holiday meal on Siegesstraße.
