Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence by Train

Manarola’s boat ramp, Vernazza’s harbour square and the striped façade of Monterosso’s Church of San Giovanni Battista make the Cinque Terre worth a full day from Florence if you want several villages rather than a hike. The return rail journey takes much of that day. This plan visits four villages, with Riomaggiore optional, but leaves out Corniglia: adding its station-to-village climb and a look around takes roughly 1½–2 hours, displaces the Monterosso stop or pushes the return to Florence roughly that much later if connections permit. Regional trains take you towards La Spezia and between the villages; the timings below illustrate the journey, not a confirmed set of departures.

Yes, if the coast matters more to you than time on the train. The route gives you harbour streets, an upper-village lunch and an old-town finish, rather than a walk along the cliffs. The outward Florence–La Spezia leg is about 2 and a half hours, while the return leg is about 3 hours on the illustrated route. Those are journey allowances, not a promise that the trains connect at the displayed times. If you want more time at one sight and less travel, consider other car-free day trips from Florence.

Buy the Florence–La Spezia rail ticket separately: the Treno Card covers regional trains only on the local coastal stretch. You need not buy the card ahead or reserve a timed entry for these village stops, but getting it online beforehand can spare a ticket-office queue on a busy day. It also admits you to park trails, including the Case Lovara Trail, local buses, station toilets and park Wi-Fi hotspots. Guided tours depend on the programme, and some La Spezia museums offer reduced admission. Decide between card and singles according to your actual village journeys, not simply the number of villages you see.

    20:50

Finish the day back at your Florence base.

  18. Ends around 20:50

At La Spezia Centrale, find the village train on the departure board and move to its platform. The outward rail journey includes a change, and the train you arrive on may not meet the next departure at the projected time. The clock shows travel and station allowances, not a confirmed connection.

Riomaggiore’s small harbour sits below steep lanes and a cluster of houses above a rocky shore. Its boat-lined inlet earns a brief detour from the station, but skip this optional stop if your incoming train is late rather than shortening lunch or assuming the next connection will wait.

Manarola’s curved boat-hauling ramp gives its harbour a different shape from Vernazza’s open square. Look towards the fishing boats and houses from the waterfront, then follow the coastal path for a view back at the village. Climb towards San Lorenzo for lunch away from the harbour: Trattoria dal Billy is higher in the residential part of town, while Cappun Magru is near the church, though neither is on Piazza Papa Innocenzo IV. Focaccia makes a light meal if you prefer to keep moving. Sit-down lunch usually runs around 12:30–14:30, so the projected arrival just before service begins suits a short look around the upper village first.

Vernazza opens onto a small natural harbour, with fishing boats by the beach and a curved waterfront of colourful houses. Stay at harbour level for the square, lanes and views from the rocks, and you need not enter Doria Castle for this stop. The visit gives you time to look around without turning it into a steep ascent.

From Vernazza, Monterosso offers a change of scene: the old town’s medieval lanes lead to the Church of San Giovanni Battista and its striped Gothic façade, with the Oratory of Santa Croce nearby. A pedestrian tunnel through the headland links this quarter with the newer seafront and station area. End at Fegina for a look along the coast. Late-afternoon light is the better choice for this final seafront view before you take the train back via La Spezia.

Train or organised tour?

From Monterosso, the rail plan returns through La Spezia Centrale, just as it entered the coast. There is no regular direct Florence train to the village stations: some regional trains run directly to La Spezia, while others change via Pisa before the final village train. The illustrated outward journey includes a change and the return may require more than one.

Regional trains are the ordinary choice for the village hops. Faster Intercity services may be part of a Florence–La Spezia journey, but an Intercity ticket includes a reserved seat, and the local Treno Card will not cover that train. A faster mainline train is worthwhile only if its actual arrival leaves a workable connection onto the coast and a workable return.

An organised coach tour is still a full day out from Florence: a representative departure is around 07:00–07:15, with a return around 20:00–21:00, though operators vary. It commonly takes you to La Spezia by road before using village trains or, on some itineraries, a coastal boat; the coach does not drive you from harbour to harbour. One itinerary may include Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso and Riomaggiore, while another offers free time in only two or three villages. Choose a group departure if managed transfers matter more than controlling your time at each harbour. Go independently if you want to drop Riomaggiore or linger in Vernazza, while managing your own rail changes.

Local tickets and the Cinque Terre Train Card

Before your first village train, compare a Treno Card with singles for the whole local journey. The card includes regional trains between La Spezia Migliarina and Levanto, covering both the La Spezia access trains and the village hops. The illustrated route involves several local rides, making the card a simpler choice, but if you drop stops and make fewer journeys, price the singles first. Buy your Florence–La Spezia ticket separately whichever local option you choose.

Via dell’Amore, the coastal path from Riomaggiore towards Manarola, is not part of this train-led village sequence. The 2026 card includes its admission, but you still need to reserve a date and entry slot, as a card alone does not let you walk in whenever you arrive. Make it a deliberate replacement for time at a village rather than an extra squeezed between two trains. The booked entry would then become the first fixed point around which to build your rail journey.

Corniglia, the closed trail and footwear

After Monterosso’s old town and seafront, the route goes back by rail rather than climbing to Corniglia. From Corniglia station the Lardarina stairway leads up to the village, with a road approach as another option. Allow roughly 1½–2 hours to climb, look around and return to the station, and replace the Monterosso visit with it instead of assuming that adding a fifth village still gets you back to Florence on the illustrated connections.

Flip-flops are unsuitable for the Park’s ticketed trails: closed shoes with sculpted, non-slip soles are required, while open or smooth-soled shoes are prohibited. Even on a train-based day, village lanes and Corniglia’s stairs call for comfortable footwear. If the length of the Florence rail return and the walking both feel too much, a Pisa day trip by train offers a shorter outing from the same base.
