Free parking around Lucca’s walls comes with a walk into the old town. If you are heading for Piazza Napoleone, the choice is between three free areas outside the walls and the shorter walk from paid Carducci. Choose the side you approach from before driving towards the centre: the historic streets are not a shortcut to a parking space.

For a longer stay at a free site, read the signs at your space before leaving the car. Carducci’s 24-hour example starts at 08:00. The daytime tariff applies to each hour or part of an hour, so a stay starting at another time can cost differently. All four onward journeys are on foot. Carducci offers the shortest walk to the square, while Via dei Pubblici Macelli has the shortest of the three free walks.
Most of the historic centre within Lucca’s Renaissance walls is a zona a traffico limitato (ZTL), or limited-traffic zone, though it does not cover every street inside the walls. Do not assume the restricted centre opens to visitors at night: access to the permit-only areas remains restricted, while specified streets have additional restrictions every day from 10:30 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00. Leave the car outside the walls instead of driving through a camera-controlled gate towards the square.
If your accommodation is in a restricted part of the centre, ask its operator to register your vehicle’s number plate for guest access. This can allow the shortest route to the property for check-in and luggage, with stopping limited to 30 minutes unless you park in private space available to the accommodation. A room booking alone is not a vehicle permit.
Piazzale Don Franco Baroni and Alle Tagliate
From the northern side of the walls, Piazzale Don Franco Baroni and Parcheggio Tagliate are separate free parking areas, not two names for one entrance. Both can be reached without driving through a historic-centre ZTL gate. Don Franco Baroni is the choice to reconsider on Wednesdays and Saturdays: the weekly market runs there from 08:00 to 13:00 and parking may be reduced or unavailable.
- Name
- Piazzale Don Franco Baroni
- Location
- North of Lucca’s historic walls Maps
- Essential fact
- A public parking area north of Lucca’s walls, near the approach to Porta Santa Maria.
For Parcheggio Tagliate, leave the outer ring road at Viale Carlo del Prete for Via delle Tagliate di San Marco. This northern approach keeps the car outside the restricted historic centre. Once parked, you can use Porta Santa Maria as your pedestrian entry, and the walk then continues through the centre to Piazza Napoleone. The two northern walks use the same gate, so the decision between them is more about the available space and market day than a substantially different route.

- Essential fact
- A parking area on the north side of Lucca’s walls, near Via delle Tagliate.

At Don Franco Baroni, head towards Porta Santa Maria before continuing to the square. The first stretch is outside the walls, while the remainder is an old-town walk. Allow for the whole walk with luggage, rather than treating the gate as your endpoint. If you intend to leave the car longer than a short visit, read the conditions posted at your space before walking away.
Via dei Pubblici Macelli
If you arrive east of the walls, Parcheggio Via dei Pubblici Macelli gives you a free place to leave the car on Via dei Pubblici Macelli without crossing a historic-centre ZTL gate. Use the street as the parking address, then make the rest of the journey on foot. There is no need to drive into the old town to reach Piazza Napoleone.
- Name
- Parcheggio Via dei Pubblici Macelli
- Location
- East of Lucca’s historic walls Maps
- Essential fact
- A public parking area on Via dei Pubblici Macelli, east of Lucca’s walls.
From the car park, Porta Elisa has a pedestrian passage into the historic centre. Continue from that gate towards Piazza Napoleone: unlike the two northern options, this route enters from the east rather than through Porta Santa Maria. The gate comes relatively early in the walk, so reaching the walls is not the same as reaching the square. Keep that distinction in mind if you are carrying bags or deciding whether to pay for a shorter walk from the south.
Carducci: the paid alternative
If the eastern free space does not suit your arrival or the walk with bags, Parcheggio Carducci is the paid alternative south of the walls. From the Lucca Est motorway exit, approach via Viale Europa and Viale Carducci. You can enter the car park from outside the historic-centre ZTL. Park here for the shorter walk to Piazza Napoleone, entering the old town on foot through Porta San Pietro rather than taking the car through a restricted gate.
- Name
- Parcheggio Carducci
- Location
- South of Lucca’s historic walls Maps
- Essential fact
- A car park on Viale Carducci, outside Lucca’s southern walls.
The parking tariff is €1 for each hour or part of an hour from 08:00 to 20:00, while parking is free from 20:00 to 08:00. Pay for your ticket before driving out. Vehicle access is round the clock, but the facility is unattended. That combination can make Carducci useful for a late return, provided you are comfortable leaving your car in an unsupervised parking area.
Ordinary visitor parking does not require an advance reservation: take a ticket on entry. Advance booking belongs to separately arranged special-event parking, such as Lucca Comics & Games, when that event offers it. Do not plan an ordinary day around an event reservation procedure.
White, blue and yellow parking bays
A bay’s sign decides whether you may park there and for how long. White markings indicate free parking, blue paid parking and yellow resident spaces. A free bay can still have a time limit, so read the conditions before walking away.
At a blue bay, pay as directed there and show proof if required. Unlike a named car park, restrictions can change from space to space.
Choosing a street space
Do
- Use a marked white bay for free parking, subject to the conditions shown at that space.
- Use a marked blue bay if you are willing to pay; follow the posted payment instructions and display proof if directed.
Don’t
- Occupy a yellow bay reserved for residents.
- Treat a private customer space as public parking or ignore a time limit on a free bay.
Parking overnight and hotel access
For an overnight stay, follow the posted terms at a free space. Carducci has a free night period and remains accessible around the clock. Read any stay limit before leaving a car overnight. Carducci is unattended, so take valuables with you.
If your accommodation is inside the restricted centre, arrange vehicle registration with the property before driving to its address. Guest access is for check-in and luggage, not general street parking, so ask whether the property has a private space for your vehicle.
With a hire car, the rental company may contact you about its charge for passing your details to the authorities. The official ZTL notice and payment instructions can arrive later, often by post, and contact methods and delays vary. The rental company’s administration charge does not pay the official penalty.
Is bringing a car worthwhile?
Bringing a car to Lucca
Pros
- A free space outside the walls lets you leave the vehicle behind while visiting the old town.
- A car remains useful if Lucca is one stop on a wider Tuscany road trip.
Cons
- Free spaces mean a longer walk to Piazza Napoleone, especially awkward with luggage, small children or limited mobility.
- Don Franco Baroni may lose spaces on market days; Carducci costs money and is unattended.
If Lucca is your only destination, you may not need a car. Compare train, direct bus and taxi options in Pisa Airport to Lucca without a car before hiring one solely to visit the old town.
On a wider Tuscany road trip, the free sites offer a place to leave the car if your party can manage the walk. Carducci costs more but shortens the walk with luggage or children, though it does not remove the walk into the centre. Choose with the least mobile traveller in mind.
