How Expensive Is Vienna? Three Daily Budgets

Vienna’s biggest budget choices are your room and the interiors you want to visit. Schönbrunn can be a free park outing or a paid palace visit. A private room costs much less per person when shared. Allow for meals and city travel separately from flights and airport transfers, so a cheap airfare does not disguise the cost of the stay.

Vienna is a substantial but manageable city-break expense, broadly comparable with an ordinary UK city break rather than a bargain destination. Sharing a mid-range room keeps the cost closer to familiar UK hotel-and-restaurant spending, but travelling alone changes that judgement sharply.

The lower ends assume quieter dates, simpler meals and rooms outside the historic centre. Central hotels, fuller meals and busy weekends push spending upwards. Breakfast is bought separately: compare room-only rates.

For three days and two nights, allow roughly EUR 160–255 per person shoestring, EUR 350–530 sharing mid-range, or EUR 615–940 sharing comfortable. These include three days of meals, drinks and city travel, but only one selected paid admission at each paid level, with free sightseeing on the other days. Solo private-room stays raise those estimates to about EUR 490–750 and EUR 875–1,335 respectively. Flights and airport transfers are additional.

Rooms, seasons and accommodation tax

Compare whole-room prices, not the headline price per guest. The private-room ranges above assume two people sharing, whereas the youth-hostel figure buys one dormitory bed. A budget private room typically costs about EUR 90–140 per night for two on quieter dates, with modest facilities and a less central address keeping it towards the lower end.

For comparable mid-range doubles, allow roughly EUR 140–180 per room per night around Westbahnhof and EUR 180–220 in the historic centre on ordinary dates. Christmas-market demand, major events and popular weekends can take rooms beyond these ranges. Westbahnhof has a direct U3 underground connection to Volkstheater and Stephansplatz, so staying there need not mean changing trains to reach central sights.

Neubau offers a different setting from a station-area stay: Spittelberggasse runs through its historic streets. Compare the character and sightseeing convenience of the areas to stay in Vienna alongside the room price, rather than treating every address outside the centre as interchangeable.

Accommodation tax is 5% of the accommodation charge excluding VAT and breakfast, from 1 July 2026 through 30 June 2027. It applies to paid temporary lodging, including hotels, guesthouses, private rooms, holiday flats and camping accommodation. The private-room estimates include it: do not add it again.

Youth-hostel stays are exempt. Children have no general age-based exemption, though minors staying for school attendance or vocational training qualify. Stays longer than three consecutive months are exempt, while shorter visitor stays have no separate taxable-night cap.

Meals, coffee and drinks

Choose a casual restaurant dinner when you want a sit-down evening meal. A simpler takeaway-style evening meal suits the shoestring budget, while a more elaborate restaurant visit belongs in the comfortable budget.

  • Choose a bakery breakfast for about EUR 5–8 per person, including something to eat and a hot drink. Allow more for a larger café breakfast.
  • Choose a sausage-stand or takeaway lunch for about EUR 6–10 per person, or a casual sit-down lunch for EUR 12–20 when you want a longer break.
  • Choose a casual restaurant dinner for about EUR 22–35 per person before drinks. Central addresses and fuller meals tend towards the upper end.
  • Allow about EUR 3–6 per cup for coffee, with traditional central coffee houses towards the upper end.
  • Allow about EUR 5–8 per serving for beer or wine, with central restaurant settings generally dearer.

A melange is Vienna’s milk coffee, usually espresso with steamed milk and foam. Spend on a coffee-house visit when you want the sit-down break, rather than treating every coffee as a quick takeaway.

Brunnenmarkt’s stalls offer kebabs, pide (filled Turkish flatbread) and börek (filled flaky pastry). These are useful alternatives to a restaurant lunch. Vienna cheap eats supplies named inexpensive meal stops for putting that allowance into practice.

Before ordering, look for Gedeck or Couvert, meaning a cover charge, on the menu. It is normally billed separately per person. A separate service fee is unusual, but a menu note such as Servicepauschale should match an extra bill line. Compulsory extras are not voluntary tips: tipping in Vienna explains customary amounts and how to pay them. Leave room within your meal allowance for extras rather than ordering up to its limit.

Schönbrunn’s Palace Ticket buys the broader interior visit: the principal floor includes Franz Joseph and Elisabeth’s private apartments, the State Apartments and Maria Theresa’s private chambers. The self-guided tour takes approximately 75 minutes, with an audio guide or printed description included depending on availability.

Upper Belvedere is the choice for Austrian art, including Klimt’s The Kiss, rather than another tour of imperial rooms. The Kunsthistorisches Museum offers Old Master paintings and imperial collections, and walk-in admission makes it easier to keep this visit flexible, while online purchase can avoid a ticket-office wait.

The table’s concessions depend on eligibility, not on visiting at a cheaper hour. Kunsthistorisches Museum reductions include students under 25, pensioners aged 65 or over, unemployed visitors, and visitors with reduced mobility and their companions. Schönbrunn also permits a qualifying companion of a blind or visually impaired visitor or wheelchair user to enter free.

The Vienna PASS includes Schönbrunn’s State Apartments Tour, not the full Palace Ticket. The broader ticket upgrade costs approximately EUR 10 per adult. Upper Belvedere and standard Kunsthistorisches Museum admission are included.

For just the full Schönbrunn visit and Upper Belvedere, separate tickets total EUR 65 per adult, versus approximately EUR 119 for the pass with the upgrade. That is about EUR 54 extra, so these two visits alone do not justify it. Other covered attractions must be visits you actually want. First use at an attraction or a HOP ON HOP OFF bus activates one calendar day, midnight to midnight: start in the morning, not late afternoon.

City tickets and airport coverage

Choose city tickets by the number of separate journeys, not the number of vehicles you board. A single ticket permits transfers during one uninterrupted journey in one direction within Vienna. Start immediately after purchase or validation and finish within its maximum 80 minutes. Sightseeing between rides means a new journey.

Transport-inclusive Vienna City Card

Unlimited travel becomes cheaper at four separate journeys in either format, while up to three, singles cost less. Unlimited travel lets you add a tram ride without another fare. Vienna’s trams also make useful connections between sights without returning to an underground station.

The city ticket covers travel within Vienna. Vienna Airport lies outside that coverage: rail travel needs an additional ticket for the section outside the city. Airport buses and the City Airport Train (CAT) are excluded. Keep arrival and departure costs separate from the recurring city-day budget.

The Vienna City Card is a transport-and-discount product, unlike the attraction-entry PASS. Its premium over the digital unlimited ticket is EUR 9.30 per adult. After the museum discount, you are still EUR 8.30 behind: that visit alone does not justify the card. Other discounts must save money on things you already intend to buy.

Ways to spend less

  • Share a mid-range double: splitting the room saves about EUR 70–110 per person per night compared with occupying it alone on the same dates.
  • Choose a youth-hostel bed instead of a solo mid-range double: save roughly EUR 90–190 per person per night if you are happy with a shared dormitory.
  • Compare equivalent Westbahnhof and historic-centre rooms: corresponding ends of the ordinary-date ranges suggest about EUR 40 per room per night, or EUR 20 each sharing, but actual offers can overlap.
  • Replace a casual restaurant lunch with sausage-stand or takeaway food: save about EUR 6–10 per person when comparing corresponding ends of the meal ranges.
  • Take only two city journeys: digital singles save EUR 3.70 per adult against unlimited travel. At four journeys, unlimited saves EUR 2.30 against four digital singles.
  • Choose Schönbrunn’s Palace Park instead of the palace interior: save EUR 42 per adult if the park, rather than the rooms, is what you want.

The Palace Park is free during opening hours, but the Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, Maze, zoo, Palm House and Desert House require separate tickets. A free park visit is therefore a specific choice, not free access to every attraction in the grounds.
