Lucca Nightlife: 3 Ways to Go Out

Piazza San Michele is a useful starting point for an evening inside Lucca’s walls, but it need not be the whole night. Choose drinks for conversation, a changing craft-beer selection for a slower stop, or a Piazza Napoleone concert for a particular performance. The concert is an event to plan around, while the bars are places to settle in. If you are staying beyond the walls, think about the return before your last drink or the end of the show.

Piazza San Michele and the cocktail lanes

For a central drinks night, start at Piazza San Michele and decide whether you want the square or a cocktail bar down a side lane. These are places to talk over a drink, rather than a route to a dance floor. The three choices below serve different kinds of evening.

The church of San Michele in Foro gives the piazza its distinctive backdrop, while the surrounding streets make it an easy meeting point. Screwdriver Bar faces the square at Piazza San Michele 13 and serves evening drinks, including cocktails. Choose the square-facing bar if you want your night to begin in the middle of the historic centre without committing to an event or moving between venues.

For a different setting nearby, Magellano is a cocktail bar at Vicolo dell’Olivo 3. It is a named bar to seek out down a narrow lane rather than a seat facing the piazza, and that change of setting is the point of choosing it over Screwdriver. Neither choice promises dancing. If you would rather carry on walking after a drink, Piazza Anfiteatro is another memorable square to pass through, not another bar on this list.

You can keep the evening to one bar without turning it into a club crawl. If you want a performance rather than a spontaneous drink, make Piazza Napoleone your destination.

Via Michele Rosi for craft beer

For craft beer rather than cocktails, head to De Cervesia TapRoom at Via Michele Rosi 20, in the north-east part of Lucca’s historic centre. This is the place to sit with a beer from six taps that change weekly, so the appeal is trying what is pouring on the night, not chasing a fixed label. It is a focused stop for a conversation over beer, not a club or a dance venue.

Do not confuse the TapRoom with De Cervesia’s separate Beer&Shop at Via Fillungo 92. If you want the on-site taproom experience, Via Michele Rosi is the address to use. The TapRoom closes earlier than Screwdriver, so choose it for a beer-led evening rather than a very late last stop.

Via Michele Rosi gives you a quieter alternative to the square-centred drinks plan: pick your beer, take time over it and let that be the outing. If beer is not what you want, Lucca wine bars for a seated glass offers a separate selection rather than treating this taproom as a wine stop.

Piazza Napoleone for a concert

Piazza Napoleone is the setting for Lucca Summer Festival’s main concerts. On a show night, you come here for the performer you chose, not to browse bars until you hear music. A concert in the square is a scheduled, ticketed outing, quite different from stepping into the public piazza on an ordinary evening. The square itself is not a ticket-only attraction, but entry to a festival concert is.

Choose a particular performance, then buy its ticket through the authorised sales channels linked from the event’s official page. Doors and performance times differ by event, so use the individual listing to decide when to arrive. Allow room for the gathering crowd as well as for the journey home afterwards, particularly if your accommodation is outside the walls. A concert night has a fixed focal point. It is not a reliable substitute for finding live music in a bar on any night you happen to be in Lucca.

If you meet friends before the performance, distinguish your meeting place in the open square from the concert entrance. After the show, head for the return you planned rather than assuming a taxi will be immediately available beside the crowd.

Getting home after drinks or a concert

After drinks around San Michele or a beer on Via Michele Rosi, accommodation inside the walls may be a walk away. If you are staying beyond the historic centre, decide how you will get back before the evening runs late. A concert at Piazza Napoleone brings more people out at once, so give the end of the show particular thought. A club outside the centre likewise needs a separate journey, rather than the easy walk between the three places above.

For a late ride, RadioTaxi Lucca takes phone bookings around the clock on +39 0583 1745, and appTaxi is another booking option. Piazza Santa Maria and Piazzale Verdi are named taxi-rank locations, but do not rely on finding a car waiting there at the moment you leave. If you have a longer journey to accommodation, booking by phone lets you arrange a pick-up rather than simply walking out of the walls and hoping for transport.
