Marseille by Train from London: Fares and Arrival

Travelling from London St Pancras International to Quai des Belges at Marseille’s Old Port means taking Eurostar to Paris, changing stations and continuing south by TGV. The key decisions are how much space to leave between trains, which ticket flexibility you need and whether to walk or take the metro after arriving at Saint-Charles.

Eurostar does not run directly to Marseille. Choose rail for an overland journey ending at a central station. Flying via Heathrow is the alternative when speed matters more.

Rail rather than flying: St Pancras to Quai des Belges

Pros

  • About six hours of travel with the usual Eurostar service and final walk, excluding London boarding formalities and Paris connection waiting.
  • Arrival at Saint-Charles avoids an airport-to-city transfer.

Cons

  • The Paris station change means carrying your bags between trains; the connection allowance makes elapsed time longer than the travel subtotal.
  • Starting fares are limited, and prices rise with demand. Compare the combined rail tickets with roughly £70–£250 per adult one way for a flight, depending on date, bags and availability.

For Heathrow, take the Hammersmith & City line and change at Paddington for the Elizabeth line: about three quarters of an hour from St Pancras, before airport formalities. In Marseille, the FlixBus airport-to-Saint-Charles journey takes about 35 minutes. The separate A1 airport shuttle costs €15 per adult one way. From Saint-Charles, continue to the same Old Port endpoint.

The late London train requires an overnight Paris stay: France is one hour ahead of the UK, so it arrives after the southbound departure.

Eurostar tickets and boarding at St Pancras

At St Pancras, follow signs for Eurostar departures, rather than domestic platforms. Have your ticket and passport ready for ticket checks, security screening and border controls before reaching the departure lounge.

Buy the Eurostar and French train tickets separately, matching the Paris connection before paying. Standard suits a price-led trip. Premier offers fully flexible travel, from £245 per adult for the direct one-way London–Paris portion when purchasing a return ticket. It includes same-day boarding on another available train at no extra charge, subject to availability.

For an early London start, ES 9080 departs at 06:01 on 30 September 2026.

If disruption causes a missed connection between eligible Eurostar and TGV INOUI services, ask train staff or the station desk for onward assistance, even with separate tickets. HOTNAT/AJC assistance may put you on a later available train without extra payment, but not necessarily the next departure. Allow for a next-day continuation: overnight accommodation and compensation based on whole-journey arrival are not covered. Do not assume the same assistance for OUIGO. Travel insurance is useful.

Changing from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon

After Eurostar arrives at Gare du Nord, take RER D directly to Gare de Lyon, with no interchange. RER is Paris’s suburban rail service. Follow its signs into the station and choose a southbound train showing Gare de Lyon among its stops.

The station-to-station journey takes about 13 minutes. Allow about an hour between trains to leave the Eurostar platform, find the RER, then reach the correct TGV hall and platform. Give yourself more space if bags or children slow your progress.

Use the Metro-Train-RER ticket and validate at entry. Transfers between metro, train and RER are allowed within two hours of first validation while you stay in the controlled area and follow signed transfer routes. Validate again wherever required. Exiting and re-entering requires a new ticket. Keep your ticket accessible through the journey, and pack so you can manage your luggage through both stations without assistance.

TGV tickets and departures from Gare de Lyon

At Gare de Lyon, both TGV INOUI and OUIGO run directly to Marseille Saint-Charles. The TGV INOUI journey takes about 3 hours. Match your train number to the departure display, then follow the indicated hall and platform. Choose Marseille Saint-Charles as your arrival station when buying the ticket.

TGV INOUI fares vary with the journey and availability. Its Carte Liberté discount card offers fully flexible, destination-based fares, making it a different proposition from buying the cheapest available ticket.

OUIGOFLEX is a change add-on, not a fully flexible base fare. It costs €9 per adult and is free for children under 12. It permits unlimited changes, but adults still pay any fare difference.

  • TGV INOUI includes two labelled bags per person, each up to 70 × 90 × 50 cm, plus one labelled hand-luggage item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. You must carry everything yourself in one go.
  • OUIGO includes one hand-luggage item up to 36 × 27 × 15 cm and one cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. Extra or XL luggage needs a paid option unless included in OUIGO PLUS.
  • OUIGO PLUS includes one extra or XL bag up to 130 × 90 × 50 cm and 30 kg.

After an overnight Paris stay, the first direct TGV on 1 October 2026 is TGV INOUI 6101, departing Gare de Lyon at 06:38 and arriving at Marseille Saint-Charles at 09:57.

Saint-Charles to the Old Port

From Saint-Charles, walk if you can comfortably manage your bags downhill. Quai des Belges is about 1.1 km away, taking about 14 minutes. The monumental staircase from the station forecourt descends 104 steps to Place des Marseillaises. Continue down Boulevard d’Athènes and Boulevard Dugommier to La Canebière, then turn right towards the Old Port.

To avoid the staircase, use the station’s lifts on the Boulevard Maurice Bourdet side. With heavy bags or tired children, the metro reduces the street walk, though you still need to move through the stations.

Take M1 towards La Fourragère to Vieux-Port, without changing. The metro entrance is inside Saint-Charles, reached from the main railway concourse. The journey including the final walk to Quai des Belges takes about 6 minutes. At the harbour, you finish at its inland end, rather than needing another ride along the waterfront.
