Milan to Trento: Train and Coach Routes

From Piazza Duca d’Aosta outside Milano Centrale, you can reach Piazza Duomo in Trento by train or direct FlixBus coach. A through train avoids a transfer and leaves you closer to the old centre, while the coach can suit you when its departure and complete ticket price fit your plans. The coach boards beside Centrale, rather than inside the railway station.

Both choices start at Piazza Duca d’Aosta and finish at Piazza Duomo. Choose a through train if you want to keep your bags with you without changing trains. Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo both offer this option, while the connecting sample above is a different journey.

Choose the direct coach when its offered departure and complete fare suit you better. Compare the whole connecting rail ticket price, not just its Milan–Verona component, and include any extra coach luggage charge.

Train services and tickets

From Milano Centrale, Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo both run through high-speed trains to Trento. A stop at Verona Porta Nuova does not necessarily mean you change trains: Italo’s direct route calls there and at Rovereto before Trento.

Italo also markets an Italo + Italobus journey via Verona, which is not a through rail service. Distinguish that train-and-bus combination from an itinerary with two trains when selecting your journey.

For a rail connection, Italo advertises Milano Centrale–Verona Porta Nuova tickets from €8.90 per adult one way. That starting fare buys only the first train: you still need the onward Verona–Trento ticket. Compare the combined cost with a through ticket before choosing a connection.

Trenitalia’s Base fare has different conditions: unlimited reservation changes until departure, then one change up to 1 hour after departure. If the new Base price is higher, you pay the difference, but if it is lower, the difference is not refunded. Compare the named fare’s conditions as well as its price, especially if your arrival in Milan could move. For a discounted Frecciarossa ticket, use the change conditions of that specific fare.

Boarding and the walk from the station

  • Match the departure board to your booked train number, then locate the platform, carriage and seat. The train’s displayed destination may be beyond Trento.
  • For Trenitalia national trains, use the ticket for the booked train, and no pre-departure validation is required.
  • For a Trenitalia regional paper ticket, validate it at the station before departure. Digital Regional Tickets activate automatically at the chosen train’s scheduled departure, while Electronic Regional Tickets need no validation.
  • If changing at Verona Porta Nuova, find the onward train’s platform on the departure board and allow time to move between platforms with your bags.

For the rail option, set off from Piazza Duca d’Aosta into Milano Centrale: the approach is about 150 metres, about 2 minutes. Allow extra time to reach your platform and board, rather than arriving at the station entrance as the train departs.

For the connection, take the train from Milano Centrale to Verona Porta Nuova, about 148 km, about an hour and a quarter, then the onward train to Trento, about 92 km, about three quarters of an hour. Allow interchange time at Verona in addition to these separate legs, so you can reach the onward platform with your bags.

A cumulative Trenitalia ticket protects a delay-caused missed connection, but separate contracts do not carry that protection. With the cumulative ticket, Trenitalia must offer continuation on an alternative route or a refund. An Italo ticket to Verona plus a separate onward ticket should not be treated as that protected Trenitalia journey.

Trento has a railway station, simply called Trento. From there, Piazza Duomo is about 550 metres, about 7 minutes on foot. You arrive within walking distance of the old centre, with a shorter bag-carrying leg than from the coach stop. Keep your luggage manageable for this last stretch as well as for any station change.

Coach stops and tickets

For the coach option, start again at Piazza Duca d’Aosta. FlixBus’s direct service boards at Piazza Luigi di Savoia on the east side of Milano Centrale, not at the rail platforms. The walk is about 400 metres, about 5 minutes. Match your ticket’s stop name to this boarding point before setting off. The Milan–Trento service includes line CIT3188.

In Trento, the coach arrives at Lungadige San Nicolò, separate from the railway station. From this riverside stop, Piazza Duomo is about 1.1 km, about 16 minutes on foot. With heavy luggage, the longer final walk can outweigh the convenience of avoiding a train change.

Reserve an additional bag in advance, subject to available space. Its fee varies with the route, line, booking time and booking method. Include it in the coach’s complete price before comparing tickets, and keep what you need during the ride in your small bag rather than the stored luggage.
