Munich Itineraries: One to Three Days in the City

Munich can fill three distinct days without sending you out of the city: the New Town Hall and river-island science collections on the first, the Residenz and Old Masters on the second, then Nymphenburg Palace and Olympic Park on the third. With only one full day, keep the Old Town and Deutsches Museum together, and add the royal rooms and paintings when you have a second.

Three full days give each pair of major stops its own day. From Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), any city-centre-bound S-Bahn runs direct to Marienplatz for the first morning. If you want a slower fourth day rather than another tightly packed city route, a four-day Munich itinerary gives you room to spread these visits out.

The Alte Pinakothek closes every Monday, while the Residenz and Deutsches Museum have no weekly closing day. The Residenz closes on 1 January, Shrove Tuesday and 24, 25 and 31 December. The Deutsches Museum also closes on Good Friday, 1 May and 1 November, as well as Shrove Tuesday and 1, 24, 25 and 31 December. Put the painting day on Tuesday to Sunday and shift a museum day if your visit falls on an annual closure.

The transport-free three-day Munich City Pass costs €59.90 for an adult and includes all four paid stops, but the four single admissions cost less if these are the only included attractions you visit. The standard Residenz ticket covers the museum rooms, not the Treasury or Cuvilliés Theatre. Nymphenburg’s palace-only ticket differs from the combination ticket, which also covers the Marstallmuseum, including the porcelain museum, and the park palaces. The latter close in winter. Many central restaurants serve lunch around 11:30–14:00, while for dinner, 19:00–21:00 is a useful window, though kitchens vary.

  13. Ends around 21:00

The New Town Hall, two very different churches and the Deutsches Museum make this a full day on foot, and a pause beside the Isar leads into dinner around Gärtnerplatz. Start at 09:00 on a Monday to Thursday: Friday morning does not work for the Asam Church interior, and Sunday Mass and market trading make the same sequence less useful. Between the named stops the walk covers about 6.2 km, and journeys to and from your accommodation add distance.

Marienplatz is worth a look for the ornate New Town Hall façade and Glockenspiel, with the Marian column at its centre and the Old Town Hall nearby.

At St Peter’s Church, the optional tower platform rewards a climb of 306 steps with views across the roofs, and on a clear day you can see towards the Alps. Skip it if you would rather save your legs for the rest of the walk.

The Frauenkirche’s twin onion-domed towers mark the old-town skyline. Inside, look for the spacious Gothic nave, the Devil’s Footprint near the entrance and Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian’s tomb. The cathedral opens daily 08:00–20:00, but sightseeing is not permitted during services.

Asam Church packs gilded stucco, ceiling frescoes and a dramatically layered altar into a small interior. From April to October, visitor hours are 09:00–19:00 Monday to Thursday and Saturday to Sunday, while from November to March they are 09:00–18:00 on those days. On Fridays entry for sightseeing begins at 13:00 in both seasons. Sunday and public-holiday Mass at 10:00 also interrupts sightseeing.

Viktualienmarkt is a practical lunch stop on a trading weekday, with prepared foods and snacks at its stalls. Choose what is ready to eat before continuing towards Isartor.

The optional Isartor stop lets you see one of the surviving historic gates and its clock before heading to the island museum.

At the Deutsches Museum, choose between historic aircraft, the U1 submarine, mining displays and physics demonstrations rather than trying to cover every gallery. Arrive with a short selection in mind so the afternoon visit stays enjoyable. General admission is available at the door, but an online ticket may save queuing at busy times.

St Lukas has a neo-Romanesque façade, twin towers and a large dome: an exterior stop makes sense after the museum.

The Maximiliansanlagen paths follow the east bank of the Isar towards the Angel of Peace and the Maximilianeum. Keep this segment short if rain makes the park unappealing, because the churches and museum provide the indoor core.

After your accommodation break, make Reichenbach Bridge your riverside pause rather than another museum visit. The river crossing gives the evening a different setting from the old-town squares.

The streets around Gärtnerplatz give you a named dinner area close to the Isar. Settle there for the evening rather than retracing the whole daytime route.

The Residenz’s Antiquarium and Dürer’s paintings carry a day that moves north through Maxvorstadt, and a garden view precedes dinner around Münchner Freiheit. Start at 09:00 in the summer opening season. Do not put this day on a Monday, when the Alte Pinakothek is closed. In the winter opening season, enter the Residenz at 10:00 and shift lunch and the gallery later, dropping Hofgarten and Siegestor first. The mapped walking legs total about 6.3 km, plus the journey to and from your accommodation.

The Munich Residenz merits a focused visit for the long Renaissance Antiquarium and the furnished state apartments. The standard museum ticket covers those rooms and collections, but the Treasury and Cuvilliés Theatre need separate or combination admission. In the summer season, 28 March–25 October, entry runs 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:00, while in the winter season, 26 October–27 March, it runs 10:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:00. You can buy standard admission at the desk, and online purchase is an optional way to avoid its queue.

The optional Siegestor is a neoclassical triumphal arch crowned by Bavaria in a lion-drawn quadriga. It adds a northward stretch, so omit it if you have spent longer with the paintings.

At Geschwister-Scholl-Platz, the White Rose leaflets set into the pavement recall the students’ anti-Nazi resistance. Pause to read them rather than walking straight through.

St Ludwig Church’s great apse fresco of the Last Judgment by Peter von Cornelius is the reason to step inside. It opens daily from 08:00 until the end of evening Mass for prayer and quiet reflection, so give way to worship while you visit.

After a break at your accommodation, head to the Monopteros in the English Garden for its panorama over the park and Munich skyline. In summer, the late light suits this view, but in winter, see it before dusk, even if that means shortening your break and moving the garden visit earlier.

From the garden, carry on north to Münchner Freiheit for dinner in Schwabing. This last walk is longer than the short hops between the museums.

Nymphenburg’s Great Hall and Gallery of Beauties make a royal morning, while BMW Welt’s public displays and the Olympic Stadium’s tent roof give the afternoon a modern turn, with Olympiaberg before dinner around Elisabethplatz. The 09:00 palace start suits 1 April–15 October. From 16 October to 31 March, start the palace at 10:00 and drop the optional park canals first, and take the hill view earlier in winter rather than waiting until after the accommodation break. This day needs transit and a fair amount of walking, including a hill climb.

Nymphenburg Palace’s Rococo Great Hall has a ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann, while the Gallery of Beauties holds portraits commissioned by Ludwig I. A palace-only ticket gets you into the palace, not the park palaces or Marstallmuseum; online timed entry is recommended. Palace hours are 09:00–18:00 from 1 April to 15 October, with last admission at 17:30; from 16 October to 31 March they are 10:00–16:00, with last admission at 15:30. It closes on 1 January, Shrove Tuesday and 24, 25 and 31 December.

Nymphenburg Palace Park’s canals, fountains and ornamental lakes reward an optional short walk. The park palaces included with the combination ticket are closed from 16 October through March, so the palace-only choice is especially straightforward in winter.

Around Rotkreuzplatz, lunch separates the palace grounds from the northern half of the route. Tram 17 reaches the palace from central Munich. For the next leg, take the U1 from Rotkreuzplatz and change to the U3 for Olympiazentrum, then walk to BMW Welt.

BMW Welt’s double-cone roof and public car and motorcycle displays make it worthwhile even without the separate BMW Museum. General entry is free and walk-in, and showroom vehicles can be viewed 09:00–18:00. The building closes on 24–26 December and from 31 December to 1 January.

At the optional Olympiasee, the lake reflects the Olympic Tower and the park’s roof structures. Skip it if the outdoor portion is taking longer than you want.

Outside the Olympic Stadium, look at the transparent cable-net canopy, the supporting masts and the curved terraces beneath. The outdoor park paths are accessible day and night except when events or safety restrictions close an area, but this is not a stadium interior visit.

The Olympic Village is residential: stay on the public pedestrian paths among its terraced blocks and colourful façades, rather than treating its buildings as exhibits to enter.

Return after your accommodation break to climb Olympiaberg for a skyline view, with the Alps visible on clear days. The late light works in summer, but winter darkness calls for the hill before the long break, so leave the optional lake out to make room.

After the hill, take transit towards Elisabethplatz and find dinner around the square in Schwabing, rather than making the long cross-city return on foot.

Google Street View, 2022-11.

If you have one or two days

For one full day, keep Marienplatz, the two churches and Deutsches Museum, with lunch at Viktualienmarkt and dinner near Gärtnerplatz. Cut St Peter’s tower and Isartor first. For two full days, add the Residenz and Alte Pinakothek day, and leave Nymphenburg and Olympic Park for a third. If you want a less compressed order, a detailed two-day Munich route develops that shorter stay.

Arriving late? Take the outdoor Old Town walk and give the museum a separate opening window. With an early departure, lose an optional climb, gate or garden before cutting a main interior. In rain, favour the museum and gallery over park paths. Short winter daylight makes the Monopteros or Olympiaberg view an earlier stop, not an after-dark reward, and Munich’s seasonal planning guide can help you choose which daylight and weather trade-offs matter for your dates.
