3 Days in Cologne: Cathedral, Art and River Walks

Cologne Cathedral, Museum Ludwig and the Rhine give you three quite different ways into Cologne: Gothic craftsmanship, modern art and a city seen from both banks. Three full days leave room for the main sights and neighbourhood evenings, with time to sit by the river, return to your room and have dinner beyond the Old Town.

Cologne’s centre is walkable, and the first morning links the Old Town lanes with a bridge-side viewing pause before cathedral sightseeing. The westward Belgian Quarter outing and southern riverfront day ask more of your feet than a compact cathedral-and-Old-Town visit. Wear supportive shoes and carry rain protection, because the bridge and harbour walks are exposed.

Move whole days rather than squeezing closed sights into their neighbours. If your stay includes Sunday, use the art or chocolate day then and put the cathedral day on a non-holiday weekday. If it includes Monday, keep Museum Ludwig on another day. The cathedral day is the simplest Monday choice outside ecclesiastical holidays. Seasonal Monday closures also affect the Chocolate Museum.

Lunch is usually served around 12:00–14:00 and dinner around 18:00–22:00, with variation between restaurants. The meal areas below let you choose between a quick bite and a seated meal rather than commit to a particular restaurant.

Arrange accommodation well ahead for Carnival: central hotels can fill and prices rise around the main celebration days. A central room also makes the afternoon rests useful without turning every evening into another long outing.

Museum Ludwig admission includes the permanent collection and all special exhibitions. Buying Chocolate Museum tickets online is a queue-saving choice, not a compulsory reservation. Advance tower tickets can also reduce waiting, but you can instead buy them at the cathedral’s Central Ticket Office.

The cathedral interior tariff is for sightseeing, while attending services, praying or lighting a candle remains free. Choose the tourist visit for time with the shrine and windows outside worship. At Museum Ludwig, the group-registration fee does not apply to your individual collection visit. Guided Chocolate Museum tours, courses and tastings are separate advance-booking choices.

Its transport coverage stops at the city boundary. On these walking-led days, the card is most useful if you prefer public transport for room returns or evening outings.

City Hall’s Gothic tower, cathedral glass and Deutz’s skyline views make this a landmark-led day, ending with brewery dining around Alter Markt.

At Rathausplatz, contrast the City Hall tower with its Renaissance loggia. Hohenzollern Bridge frames the Rhine and cathedral. Pedestrian paths run on both sides, but the central-bank north-side stair-tower access is not barrier-free.

The Shrine of the Three Kings is the cathedral’s essential interior sight, alongside the Gothic nave and modern south-transept stained glass. Sightseeing hours are Monday–Saturday 10:00–17:45, Sundays and ecclesiastical holidays 13:30–16:30, so move this morning off Sundays and church holidays. Do not sightsee during services. Cover shoulders and upper body, and shorts and skirts must reach at least halfway down the thigh.

Great St Martin’s massive tower and four corner turrets reward the optional detour before a Fischmarkt breather and Heumarkt lunch. Cut the optional tower first if tired: its narrow spiral staircase has about 533 steps and no lift, though rooftops, Rhine and bridge reward the effort.

KölnTriangle puts the cathedral, bridge and historic centre together across the water. A lift reaches the 28th floor, followed by stairs to the deck: it is not step-free.

After your room break, sit at Deutzer Treppen on the Rheinboulevard. Late-afternoon light suits the cathedral view when daylight permits. In winter, pause here before returning to your room, and shorten exposed stops in rain. At Alter Markt, try Kölsch, Cologne’s local beer, with Halver Hahn, a rye roll with aged Gouda and mustard.

After the Old Town and Deutz, return to the cathedral area for Museum Ludwig’s Warhol and Lichtenstein, then take a slower afternoon through Belgian Quarter shops and cafés before a terrace pause and neighbourhood dinner. On an ordinary Monday, use the cathedral day instead.

Start with Museum Ludwig’s Pop Art, then its Russian avant-garde holdings and photography collection. These give the morning a sharper focus than trying to see every gallery. On the first Thursday of each month, the museum stays open until 22:00.

The optional Heinzelmännchen fountain stop introduces Cologne’s legendary industrious house gnomes through sculpted figures. After lunch near Neumarkt, St Apostles’ Basilica offers a different architectural detail: its trefoil east end has three rounded apses.

In the Belgian Quarter, street names refer to Belgian cities and provinces. Independent boutiques, small squares and café terraces make browsing the point of the afternoon. Around Brüsseler Platz, give yourself permission to stop rather than turn every street into another sight.

Aachener Weiher adds pondside lawns and shaded paths, but drop the lake detour when tired or wet. Return to your room before Stadtgarten, whose outdoor terrace and beer garden serve daily from 12:00–00:00. Finish around Brüsseler Straße: its independent restaurants, cafés and bars give you more varied dinner choices beyond the Old Town breweries.

  10. Ends around 20:00

After the Belgian Quarter, set off along the southern riverfront: the Chocolate Museum’s production line and Rheinauhafen’s Crane Houses lead into a slower Severinskirchplatz afternoon, a garden pause and dinner around Chlodwigplatz.

The Chocolate Museum makes the bean-to-bar process visible through glass-walled production, historic machinery and cocoa-growing displays. The tasting fountain adds a small edible part to the visit. Keep production in the morning visit, because it ends around 30 minutes before closing.

St Mary in Lyskirchen’s rounded Romanesque apse makes the optional detour worthwhile. At Rheinauhafen, the Crane Houses project their upper floors over the harbour like crane jibs. Look at the cantilevers from the waterfront rather than simply passing beneath them.

Severinstraße’s cafés, bakeries, casual food and Kölsch pubs offer an easy lunch before café time around Severinskirchplatz. The optional St Severin stop focuses on its landmark tower. Chlodwigplatz continues the mix of everyday food and varied restaurants at dinner.

After your room break, Volksgarten offers lakeside lawns and shaded paths. In winter, move the garden before your accommodation return to enjoy daylight. Shorten the exposed harbour pauses in heat or rain, using cafés and shaded park paths for a gentler afternoon.

Two days, late starts and early departures

  • Two days: keep the cathedral, Old Town and KölnTriangle day, then choose Museum Ludwig or the Chocolate Museum. Remove the other museum-led day and its neighbourhood stretch, but retain dinner around Brüsseler Straße or Chlodwigplatz with your chosen museum.
  • Late first morning: remove Great St Martin and the cathedral tower before shortening the cathedral interior. On the museum days, drop the optional church or fountain stops and Aachener Weiher before cutting the main collection visit.
  • Early final departure: move your preferred museum to an earlier full day. Give up the southern neighbourhood walk and Volksgarten first, rather than placing your main museum visit just before departure.

Two full days cover Cologne’s landmark core and one preferred museum, while three allow both museums and a slower southern afternoon. The extra day is especially useful if you want café stops, room breaks and neighbourhood dinners without rushing from one entrance to the next.

For a single sightseeing day, use Cologne in one day for a compact route centred on the cathedral, Old Town and cross-river view. It is a better fit than trying to compress both museum mornings and the western and southern walks into the landmark day.
