Marseille Nightlife: 5 Ways to Go Out

A night in Marseille can mean wandering the bars around Cours Julien, listening to jazz above the Old Port or heading out to dance by the sea. Choose the setting first, then plan your journey home separately: the trip out to a club is not a promise of transport back after closing.

SportBeach’s Sunday DJ party starts in the afternoon, distinct from its summer evening parties. The distances and times above take you out from the Old Port, so make a separate plan for getting back, particularly from La Belle de Mai or the seafront.

Cours Julien and Notre-Dame-du-Mont bars

Cours Julien and neighbouring Notre-Dame-du-Mont give you a district to explore rather than a table or ticket committing you to one room. Cours Julien’s street art makes the public space itself worth a look before choosing a bar. The approach from the Old Port climbs uphill, so leave yourself time to look around rather than aiming straight for a single door.

L’Intermédiaire Live presents live performances and DJ sets, making it a concrete starting point if music is the priority. Le Pulse is another possible bar stop, but it makes more sense to decide where to settle when you reach the neighbourhood than to build an evening around an assumed performance there. You can move on if a room does not suit you. That freedom is the point of this choice.

La Caravelle for live jazz

La Caravelle is a place to sit with a drink above the Old Port rather than work through several bars. Wednesday and Friday are its announced live-jazz nights, though concerts are not promised every week. The bar offers table reservations for a longer evening, but booking is not stated as a condition for drinks or music.

The concert charge has an exception for guests of Hotel Belle-Vue. If jazz is the reason for going, allow the music and a seated drink to be the evening rather than treating this as a quick stop before a distant club. Its position overlooking the harbour also makes it a distinct choice from the street-level bars around Cours Julien.

Carry Nation for a hidden cocktail bar

Carry Nation makes the arrival part of a cocktail evening: the entrance is concealed and the address is disclosed only after you reserve. Choose this for drinks and conversation with a fixed destination, not for the freedom to browse bars around Cours Julien. The setting in the Palais-de-Justice district is central, but the actual door is not something to find by wandering the neighbourhood.

Keep that email accessible for arrival. This is a different kind of choice from following a music programme: the appeal is settling in for cocktails once you have found the door, rather than moving between venues if you fancy a change of scene.

Le Chapiteau for DJs and pétanque

Le Chapiteau in La Belle de Mai pairs an open-air bar and club with pétanque courts, so you can play before the DJ sets take over your evening. Its weekend programme also includes concerts. Choose it for a night centred on a venue, not a crawl between neighbouring bars. Pétanque gives you something to do before the music, and the La Belle de Mai setting puts you beyond the Old Port bar circuit.

In autumn and winter, Friday and Saturday are the listed opening nights, from 22:00 to 04:00. Individual event nights can vary. The trip out from the Old Port uses transit. Arrange your return before staying until closing, rather than counting on the outward service for the journey back.

SportBeach for seasonal seafront parties

SportBeach on the Bonneveine seafront is a poolside alternative to a central night out. The party season begins with Friday and Saturday events in April, adds public holidays in May and runs Tuesday to Saturday from June. Choose the Sunday resident-DJ party for music from 15:00, because the summer evening programme does not promise DJs on particular weekdays.

Sunday Party entry includes swimming until sunset. Brunch & Pool includes a buffet and swimming until sunset, but mattresses are not included. Online event reservations and table bookings are offered without a stated requirement to book a table or buy entry in advance. For the afternoon pool event, leave time to enjoy the water rather than treating it as an after-dark dance stop.

For the outward public-transport journey from the Old Port, a standard single ticket costs €1.70, but buying on the bus costs €2. The seafront is farther from the centre than the other choices, so arrange a way back that suits when you actually expect to leave rather than relying on your outbound journey.

Getting home after a night out

From La Caravelle, Carry Nation or Cours Julien, walking back to a central base may suit you. For Le Chapiteau in La Belle de Mai or SportBeach on the seafront, arrange your return before going out. The journeys compared above take you there from the Old Port.

RTM’s Noctambus N1 and N2 depart Vieux-Port on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, into Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, at 01:30, 02:30, 03:30 and 04:30. If you plan to use a departure from Vieux-Port, arrange the journey there from an outer venue separately. Other evening services run until 01:00. The tram runs daily and metro hours vary by day.

For a taxi, Bluecab (04 91 92 92 92) and Taxis Radio Marseille (04 91 02 20 20) take bookings around the clock, and taxi ranks offer another option. For daytime ideas before you go out, explore things to see and do in Marseille.

A direct train from Nice-Ville is the simplest central departure for Marseille. Choose L’Équinoxe for a hired sunbed beside the sea, Plage Borély for a public-beach visit with your own equipment, or SportBeach for adult-only pool admission.
