Paris to Strasbourg: Train or Coach?

Getting from Place du Châtelet in Paris to Place Kléber in Strasbourg means choosing more than an intercity ticket: you also need to reach the Paris departure point and walk into Strasbourg’s centre. High-speed rail is the stronger choice for a same-day visit. A direct coach can suit a later departure or a cheaper ticket on your travel date, but its advertised starting fare is not automatically lower than the train’s.

Choose the train for time, or choose the coach when the actual fare or departure suits you better. TGV INOUI’s starting fare applies to selected trains and dates, subject to availability. FlixBus prices vary with the date, departure time and how early you buy. Compare the fare for your intended journey, rather than treating these starting prices as guaranteed offers.

The coach sums combine Paris access, the minimum intercity run and the final walk to Place Kléber. Traffic can lengthen the road journey. Allow separately for reaching the boarding area early, whichever mode you choose.

With larger bags, compare the included allowance before deciding on OUIGO Essentiel: extra or bulky luggage is not included, so the lowest ticket price may not be your final cost.

Trains from Gare de l’Est

From Place du Châtelet, take Metro line 4 towards Porte de Clignancourt to Gare de l’Est. This access leg is about 2.6 km and takes about 11 minutes. At the station, find your train on the departure board and follow its platform indication.

Gare de l’Est has direct Strasbourg services operated by TGV INOUI, OUIGO, DB/SNCF Voyageurs in cooperation and TER. The high-speed rail leg takes about 2 hours, while TER is the slower direct option, taking under 5 hours. Service types and availability vary by date. For an early start on 5 October 2026, the first direct departure shown is DB/SNCF train 9571 at 06:41.

INOUI suits travellers carrying more than OUIGO Essentiel’s compact allowance. Pack so that you can move between the Metro, platform and train without relying on someone else to handle your bags.

  • TGV INOUI, per person: 2 suitcases, each no larger than 70 × 90 × 50 cm, plus 1 hand-luggage item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm.
  • Alternatively on INOUI: 1 suitcase, 1 special item up to 90 × 130 × 50 cm, and 1 hand-luggage item. All items must be labelled, and you must be able to carry them yourself in one go.
  • OUIGO Essentiel: 1 hand-luggage item up to 36 × 27 × 15 cm and 1 carry-on bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm.

From the arrival stop to Place Kléber

On arrival from Paris, Strasbourg station is the rail endpoint. From there, the walk to Place Kléber is about 1 km and takes about 14 minutes. Keep your bags manageable for the final walk, not just for boarding the train.

Direct FlixBus coaches arrive at Place de l’Étoile central bus station. From this transport node, continue on foot to Place Kléber: about 1.3 km and about 18 minutes. Collect your checked bag before setting off. Both journeys finish at the same central square, rather than at their respective arrival stops.

A day trip or an overnight stay?

Once you reach Place Kléber, a day trip is worthwhile if you travel by high-speed train and leave time to return to the station. Rail leaves more of the day for Strasbourg than the coach. An overnight stay suits a late arrival or an evening in the centre without watching the return journey.

Budget for separately priced outward and return tickets. Return OUIGO fares start at €16 per adult, subject to conditions. Children aged 4–11 pay a fixed €8, while children under 3 travel free on a parent’s lap. A TGV INOUI second-class return-direction offer shown for 10 October 2026 is €73 per person one way, on selected trains and dates and subject to availability.
