Prague’s metro connects the main railway station, Florenc bus station and districts beyond the compact sightseeing centre. Choose your platform by the line’s terminal name, then choose your exit for the place you want to reach. For Old Town and Lesser Town visits, the final walk and station access matter as much as the ride.
When the metro is useful
- Lines
- A: green; B: yellow; C: red
- Interchanges
- Můstek: A/B; Muzeum: A/C; Florenc: B/C
- Paid-area entry
- Valid ticket already required
Walking is the default within the sightseeing centre: Old Town Square to Charles Bridge is about 700 metres, about 9 minutes on foot. The metro earns its place for station arrivals and longer journeys, including Vyšehrad.
The three-line layout is straightforward once you recognise the interchange names. Můstek connects beneath the lower end of Wenceslas Square. With luggage, allow for deep platforms, escalators and the walk from your exit, because a station near your destination does not necessarily offer step-free access.

Lines A, B and C: useful stations
| Station | Line | Terminal directions | Serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staroměstská | A | Nemocnice Motol / Depo Hostivař | Old Town |
| Malostranská | A | Nemocnice Motol / Depo Hostivař | Lesser Town |
| Můstek | A/B | A: Nemocnice Motol / Depo Hostivař; B: Zličín / Černý Most | Lower Wenceslas Square |
| Muzeum | A/C | A: Nemocnice Motol / Depo Hostivař; C: Letňany / Háje | Upper Wenceslas Square |
| Národní třída | B | Zličín / Černý Most | National Theatre area |
| Náměstí Republiky | B | Zličín / Černý Most | Powder Tower area |
| Hlavní nádraží | C | Letňany / Háje | Main railway station |
| Florenc | B/C | B: Zličín / Černý Most; C: Letňany / Háje | Bus station |
| Vyšehrad | C | Letňany / Háje | Vyšehrad historic site |
At Hlavní nádraží, the metro entrance is inside the railway station, directly below the main concourse. For Old Town, take C towards Háje to Muzeum, then A towards Nemocnice Motol to Staroměstská.
From Florenc, take B towards Zličín to Můstek, about 6 minutes, then change to A towards Nemocnice Motol for Malostranská, about 6 minutes. These are journey estimates between the named stations. Malostranská serves the uphill approach to Prague Castle, and tram and walking alternatives in Prague explain the tram approach if the climb is unsuitable.
From Muzeum, C towards Háje reaches Vyšehrad directly in about 5 minutes, an estimate between those stations. Continue to Tábor Gate, the historic site’s entrance, on foot: about 550 metres, about 7 minutes.
Nádraží Veleslavín is an airport connection, not an airport station: trolleybus 59 links Václav Havel Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2 with Line A there. Staroměstská brings you to Old Town on the river side, useful for continuing towards Charles Bridge.

The metro does not run overnight: the network operates approximately 05:00–00:00, with Line B running daily. A terminal’s last departure is not the last train time at an intermediate station, which depends on its position and direction of travel. Leave room for an interchange rather than arriving at the entrance just before closing.
For late returns, expect longer waits. Night trams and buses take over approximately 00:00–04:30. Temporary interruptions can alter a journey, but they are individual service restrictions, not a recurring closure-day rule.
Tickets for a short stay
| Validity | Paper | PID Lítačka app |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | 39 | 36 |
| 90 minutes | 50 | 46 |
| 24 hours | 150 | 140 |
| 72 hours | 350 | 340 |
Tickets are time-based, with unlimited transfers within their validity, including changes between metro lines. They cover metro, trams, buses, trolleybuses, trains within Prague’s city tariff area and ferries. Airport Express has a separate fare.
Short tickets suit occasional rides, while longer products suit repeated travel across the city. Allow for the whole journey, including a connecting tram or bus, rather than choosing by the metro ride alone. A day ticket runs from its start of validity, not simply until the end of that calendar day.
Buying, boarding and step-free access
Do
- Buy at station machines using card or cash, at vestibule contactless terminals, or in PID Lítačka.
- Stamp a paper ticket once on first use in a yellow vestibule validator.
- Activate an app ticket and wait one minute before entering the paid area.
- Show the activated ticket on the same device, app installation and account; open its full QR code for inspection.
Don’t
- Stamp a paper ticket again during transfers: repeated validation invalidates it.
- Treat an app purchase as activation.
- Wait until the platform or train to sort out payment: metro carriages have no payment terminals.
Keep your ticket accessible throughout the journey. With luggage, keep bags under control on escalators and leave space for passengers stepping off the train. Náměstí Míru is on Line A, whose deep stations make the descent part of the journey.

Hlavní nádraží has lifts from the railway-linked concourse to both platforms. At Muzeum, a step-free C/A change goes outdoors: take one line’s lift to the surface and continue to the other line’s lifts, rather than following the underground interchange.
Florenc’s Line B access uses two successive lifts, from the street near the bus station into the transfer corridor, then to the platform. Můstek has a lift between that station’s transfer corridor and both lines, with street lifts at the lower end of Wenceslas Square. Neither Staroměstská nor Malostranská has step-free street-to-platform access, so these sightseeing stops are unsuitable if you cannot use stairs or escalators.
Vyšehrad has direct street-level exits, but step-free access serves only the Háje-bound platform. For a city-centre return, ride towards Háje to Pražského povstání and change across its island platform. Arriving from Háje, continue to I. P. Pavlova, change across the island platform and return on a Háje-bound train to exit Vyšehrad.
