Verona Public Transport: Walking, Buses and Tickets

Verona’s central sights cluster around Piazza Bra, Piazza delle Erbe and Ponte Pietra. Getting between them is straightforward, but arriving with luggage, travelling to San Zeno or reaching the Castel San Pietro terrace calls for a different kind of journey. Porta Nuova is the starting point for the station-to-centre buses and the airport connection.

Walking is the usual choice within the historic centre. Via Mazzini links the Arena square at Piazza Bra with Piazza delle Erbe. Continue north to Ponte Pietra, the river crossing beneath Castel San Pietro.

Cobbled paving makes wheeled luggage awkward, while summer heat makes exposed stretches more tiring. Beyond Ponte Pietra, the approach to the terrace climbs uphill. Allow pauses rather than treating the walking times as a sightseeing schedule.

Sightseeing tour buses are excursion services, not ordinary ATV urban buses: their routes and tickets are separate from the local network.

Line 90 has less frequent early and late weekday trips. For line 93, school days, non-school weekdays and holidays have different departure patterns.

From Verona Airport, take AirLink 199 to Porta Nuova, then continue into the centre by urban bus or on foot. The shuttle journey takes about 17 minutes. Its station stop is in the departures area outside the railway building, so you change buses there rather than at Piazza Bra.

The day ticket saves money against three separately purchased onboard singles, which cost €6 in total. Transfers on a single urban ticket are allowed, but validate again on each boarding. The carnet is a bundle of journeys rather than an unlimited-travel pass.

Verona Card includes unlimited urban-bus travel during its 24- or 48-hour validity, with validation each time you board. It excludes AirLink. After the airport shuttle, you need a separate urban ticket unless you are using the card’s urban-bus entitlement.

Verona Bike access and riding are separate charges. The visitor subscription permits repeated rides within its access period, but the bicycle type and length of each hire determine the extra cost. Dock the bicycle between journeys rather than leaving it hired while you visit a sight.

Buying tickets and boarding

Buy urban tickets at ATV ticket offices or authorised retailers, through Ticket Bus Verona, or aboard the bus using a bank card or the driver. Driver purchases carry a surcharge. At Porta Nuova, have your ticket, phone or payment card ready before joining the boarding queue.

Do

  • Validate a paper ticket each time you board, including transfers.
  • Activate an app ticket by scanning the QR code at the bus entrance on every boarding.
  • Tap a contactless credit or debit card on board to purchase your ticket.
  • Show your valid ticket during inspection; for bank-card payment, show that card or give its last four digits.

Don’t

  • Assume buying a paper or app ticket completes validation.
  • Tap your bank card when leaving: urban buses require no exit tap.
  • Leave your proof of payment behind; identification is required if an irregularity is found.

At Porta Nuova, join the licensed taxi rank for a station pickup. For collection elsewhere, call dispatch and give the address and any luggage or mobility requirements. Mention if you need an accessible vehicle.

Allow roughly €10–€20 for a short metered city ride, depending on distance, traffic, time of day and supplements. A taxi lets you take luggage to your address, arrange a vehicle for your mobility needs or make a late return without a walk from a bus stop. Verona Bike has a collection station in Piazza Bra, and Piazza Corrubbio serves San Zeno, the district around the basilica west of the centre. The Piazza Bra-to-San Zeno cycle journey is about 1.7 km and about 5 minutes of riding, before collecting and returning the bicycle.

You need both an available bicycle and a free return dock. The app shows stations and bicycle availability. Register with your personal details and accept the contract and privacy notice before setting out.

To finish, push the bicycle into a free station dock until it locks. Confirm a steady green light and that the locking pins cannot be removed. A sightseeing pause does not end the hire: only docking does.

Beyond Ponte Pietra, the Castel San Pietro funicular carries you up to the terrace overlooking Verona. The uphill walk from the bridge is about 300 metres and about 6 minutes, with a climb that requires more effort than the central streets.

The funicular is accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties. Its lower entrance is on Via Santo Stefano beyond the bridge. Buy your ticket at the ticket office before boarding.
