Prague New Year’s Eve: Events and Getting Home

Prague’s New Year’s Eve celebrations fall on 31 December, with gala dinners and river cruises continuing into 1 January. Old Town Square suits an outdoor evening in the centre, while Letná Park offers a wider view across the city. For a reserved seat, choose the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra’s Smetana Hall concert, Mozart Dinner’s gala or a Prague Boats dinner cruise. Choose an outdoor gathering for flexibility, a concert for the music, or a gala or cruise for dinner and a celebration that carries you past midnight.

The concert, gala and cruises are recurring traditions, not successive stops on one evening. Choose a gala or cruise if you want dinner and the midnight celebration together. Arrange your ticketed event, dinner and accommodation together, rather than leaving a separate meal or the journey home until last.

Prague City Tourism publishes listings through its Prague.eu events calendar and seasonal Christmas pages. Municipal House, Mozart Dinner and Prague Boats publish their own event programmes. For outdoor plans, leave room to move away from a crowded gathering rather than tying the evening to one spot.

Old Town Square, Letná and fireworks

Old Town Square puts you among the Old Town’s landmark buildings for an outdoor celebration. Agree a meeting point away from the busiest gathering and keep an exit available.

Letná Park offers a panorama across Prague, with fireworks visible from different districts. Prague municipality does not organise a New Year’s fireworks display, so neither setting is a viewing area for a scheduled city show. Choose an indoor evening if a late outdoor gathering does not suit your party.

The designated-place public-drinking ban has an exception for New Year’s celebrations, not an automatic exemption for every public place. Outside that exception, standing with an open alcohol container counts as drinking. Prague public-drinking rules explain the wider restrictions when you leave the celebration or spend other evenings in the city.

Concerts, gala dinners and river cruises

Smetana Hall’s recurring New Year’s Eve concert suits you if the music, rather than dinner, is the main event. The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs under conductor Friedemann Riehle at Municipal House. Choose it for a seated orchestral performance rather than an evening built around a meal.

Mozart Dinner’s recurring gala in Boccaccio Hall at Grand Hotel Bohemia combines opera singers performing Mozart arias and duets with instrumental music. After midnight, the programme turns to Johann Strauss II waltzes and a Frank Sinatra gala. Choose this for an evening at the table that continues through the celebration, rather than a concert followed by a separate meal.

The six-course dinner includes Prague ham with lentils, a traditional Czech New Year’s dish. A welcome drink and beverage package cover water, soft and hot drinks, beer and wine, and the evening also includes a midnight toast.

Prague Boats’ annual dinner cruises offer a meal afloat: Grand Bohemia serves a festive buffet, while Bohemia Rhapsody has a hot and cold buffet. Both include a prosecco or non-alcoholic welcome drink, unlimited selected beer, house wines, soft drinks, water, coffee and tea, plus prosecco for the midnight toast.

Board at Čech Bridge (Čechův most), using Pier 1 for Grand Bohemia or boarding point 2 for Bohemia Rhapsody. Choose the boat before arranging your meal elsewhere: the buffet is part of the evening, not a stop to combine with the gala.

Tickets, reservations and rooms

Mozart Dinner’s gala costs roughly CZK 12,000–16,000 per person, depending on seating. Shared tables cost less than tables for two, while front-row seating and balcony boxes sit at the upper end. Children up to 12 pay about CZK 10,000. Request a reservation through Mozart Dinner’s form or email office@grandhotelbohemia.cz.

Prague Boats’ cruises start at roughly €320–340 per adult, with Bohemia Rhapsody at the lower end and Grand Bohemia at the higher end. Grand Bohemia requires advance online booking and payment through Prague Boats. Demand is high, so settle the cruise before arranging the rest of your evening.

Buy Smetana Hall concert tickets through Ticketportal as eTickets or mobileTickets, or at its sales points. Severely disabled visitors with a medical certificate and one accompanying person receive a 50% discount through either channel.

Reserve a chosen restaurant meal and arrange accommodation alongside your event. Choose your room with the late journey home in mind, especially if you prefer not to make a night-time interchange after the gala or cruise.

Getting home and New Year’s Day openings

The gala and cruise finish during the usual extended metro service, but leave time to reach a station. PID and DPP publish holiday arrangements, and PID timetables normally appear one to two weeks ahead.

  • Metro: approximately every 10 minutes until about 02:00.
  • Trams: daytime service ends around 22:00, and night trams run every 15 minutes until about 03:30, then every 20 minutes until about 07:00.
  • Buses: holiday timetables, without school services; regular daytime service ends around 22:00, followed by special schedules on some routes.
  • New Year’s Day: Sunday/holiday service; daytime trams and city buses start around 07:00.

PID’s holiday announcements and operating calendar explain the return arrangements. Choose a night-tram or bus alternative if you linger after your event.

Prague Castle’s grounds stay open later than its visitor buildings: the grounds open daily 06:00–22:00, while winter visitor-building hours are 09:00–16:00. Plan indoor sightseeing earlier and leave a walk through the grounds for later. Buy essentials beforehand: New Year’s Eve has no statutory shop-sales restriction.
