Porto Rooftop Bars for an Early-Evening Drink

A rooftop drink in Porto can put you above the downtown buildings, beside the Douro with the Arrábida Bridge in view, or across the river looking back at the city. Choose the outlook before choosing the cocktail: the location and whether you can enjoy it from your seat matter more for a short visit than a long drinks list.

Choosing a rooftop for an early-evening drink

BelloCais de GaiaCodfish, potato mille-feuille, salt cod cream€25–€35
Estimated spend per person for the suggested order; premium spirits or an added drink raise the total.

Choose Portobello for downtown buildings, 17º for a city panorama with indoor shelter, or Douro Sky Lounge for the Arrábida Bridge. Across the Douro, Porto Cruz faces Ribeira, while Bello gives you Porto’s riverside skyline with the option of more substantial food.

Arrive in daylight to make out the buildings and river before darkness changes the outlook. Ask for a view-facing seat, and reserve when a particular table matters. An outdoor seat earns its extra spend when you can comfortably stay and look out, but in wind or rain, an indoor view is a better reason to linger.

Food is optional here. Bello’s cod dish is a substantial order, not a small plate to nibble with a drink. For dinner afterwards, use Porto restaurants for a full meal to choose by the dish you want, beyond the rooftop stop.

Portobello Rooftop Restaurant & Bar

Portobello Rooftop Restaurant & Bar gives you an outdoor panorama of downtown Porto and its emblematic buildings from the eighth floor. Order the Bombay Premium Cru and tonic for a straightforward gin-led drinks stop. Gin, whisky and cocktails are part of the bar’s appeal, but the terrace’s city outlook is the reason to take your drink upstairs.

The rooftop at Premium Porto Downtown is near Batalha, a useful choice when your afternoon is already centred on the old city’s upper streets. Praça da Batalha is a broad public square among central buildings. From the rooftop, the interest shifts from street-level façades to the spread of the city.

Daylight makes that building panorama easier to read, so an early-evening drink need not depend on catching sunset. Daily drinks service runs from 12:00 to 22:30, leaving room for a visit before dinner rather than a restaurant sitting.

17º Restaurante & Bar

17º Restaurante & Bar offers a city panorama from the seventeenth floor of Hotel Dom Henrique Downtown, near Bolhão. You can see across Porto from the indoor bar, making this a useful choice when the weather would make an exposed terrace uncomfortable. The view is part of a drinks visit, not a reason you have to commit to dining.

Order the dry martini, made with gin and dry vermouth. It suits a short, cocktail-focused visit, while the adjoining restaurant’s Portuguese and Mediterranean cooking gives you a separate option if you decide to stay for food.

Outdoor, view-facing seats can also be used for drinks without a meal, subject to weather and availability. The bar serves through the early evening every day, so you can make it a pause between sightseeing and dinner.

This is a downtown outlook rather than a close view of the waterfront. Avenida dos Aliados, Porto’s broad central avenue, belongs to that same central-city setting, where monumental façades and dense surrounding streets give you plenty to notice before going upstairs.

Douro Sky Lounge

Douro Sky Lounge puts the Douro River and the Arrábida Bridge at the centre of your drinks stop. At Vincci Porto on the western riverfront, its terrace looks over the water towards the bridge, rather than across the downtown rooftops. Choose it when the bridge is the view you want to sit with.

Look for an alcohol-free mojito among the alcohol-free cocktails for a lighter drinks order. Arriving while it is still light lets you take in the bridge’s arch and its position across the river. You do not need to wait for sunset to appreciate the outlook.

Terrace Lounge 360º at Porto Cruz

Terrace Lounge 360º at Espaço Porto Cruz gives you the opposite-bank view of Ribeira from Vila Nova de Gaia. The Ribeira-facing outdoor seats look across the Douro at Porto’s waterfront, making this a Port-wine-house rooftop where the setting and the drink belong naturally together.

Look for a white Port and tonic. White Port is fortified wine, and tonic makes it a longer, lighter drink than sipping Port on its own. It is a fitting choice for a short terrace visit rather than a tasting or a meal.

You can use the Ribeira-facing seats for drinks without ordering food. Those seats can be limited, so an earlier arrival helps if the waterfront view is your priority. Tuesday to Thursday service runs from 12:30 to 00:30; Friday and Saturday from 12:30 to 01:30.

Bello Rooftop Restaurant & Bar

Bello Rooftop Restaurant & Bar is in Vila Nova de Gaia, not Porto municipality. At The Rebello on Cais de Gaia, its outdoor terrace faces Porto across the Douro, with the river and the city’s riverside skyline as the outlook. Daylight is useful for picking out the waterfront buildings rather than simply watching their lights.

Bello’s mixology and petiscos, Portuguese small plates, suit a drink with something to eat. You can use the Porto-facing terrace for cocktails and small plates without ordering a full meal. Cais de Gaia’s riverfront setting puts this stop on the wine-lodge bank of the Douro.

If you want a more substantial order, choose the codfish with potato mille-feuille and salt cod cream. Mille-feuille here means thin layers of potato. This is a composed cod dish rather than cod fritters or a small nibble. Treat it as an optional extension of the drinks visit, with the food taking a larger share of your spend.
