Starting fares depend on availability: TGV INOUI’s lowest price applies to selected trains and dates, while Frecciarossa’s varies by train and travel date. OUIGO also advertises tickets below €25. OUIGOFLEX allows changes to travel dates and destination.

Rail rather than a direct coach, Place de la Bastille–Quai des Belges

Pros

  • Rail’s travelling subtotal is about 3 and a half hours, against roughly 10–12 hours by coach including the Paris approach and shared Marseille connection, before boarding, departure waits and the metro interchange.
  • Advertised rail starting fares can undercut coach fares; choose rail when saving travelling time matters.

Cons

  • A particular train may cost more than the coach departure that suits you.
  • The latest listed direct BlaBlaCar Bus departure is 22:45, depending on travel date, which may suit an overnight journey.

For the coach, walk from Place de la Bastille to Bercy Seine: about 2.5 km and about 36 minutes. Both coach operators arrive at Saint-Charles and use the same final metro-and-walk connection as rail.

  • FlixBus: adult one-way fares from €24.98; minimum scheduled journey 9 hours 10 minutes.
  • BlaBlaCar Bus: adult one-way fares from €23.49; listed direct journeys take 10 hours 35 minutes or 11 hours 05 minutes, with a route average of 10 hours 41 minutes. Departures vary by date.
  • BlaBlaCar Bus tickets are exchangeable and refundable without fees up to 30 days before departure.

Tickets, luggage and booking ahead

Compare the fare for your chosen departure, not just the advertised starting price. Buying ahead usually gives you more choice of lower-priced seats, and popular dates and departures can cost more. Select Paris Gare de Lyon and Marseille Saint-Charles when buying so that the ticket matches this journey.

  • TGV INOUI: two labelled suitcases, each up to 70 × 90 × 50 cm, plus labelled hand luggage up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Alternatively, take one suitcase, one special item up to 90 × 130 × 50 cm and hand luggage. You must carry everything yourself in one go.
  • OUIGO: one hand-luggage item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm and one cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. Additional or bulky luggage needs an option, with a limit of 130 × 90 × 50 cm and 30 kg.
  • Frecciarossa: two luggage items, each up to 80 × 50 × 31 cm, plus one hand-luggage item, free. Carry and stow them yourself. A pair of skis, snowboard, surfboard or pushchair, up to 2 m long in a closed bag, may count as one luggage item.

A larger suitcase can make an OUIGO luggage option necessary. Include your bags when comparing the total ticket cost, rather than treating the lowest fare as the whole price.

Frecciarossa allows unlimited changes until scheduled departure, with any fare difference payable. The new journey must take place within six months of the first change.

Use SNCF Connect’s website or app for TGV INOUI and OUIGO. OUIGO exchanges are also available through its website, app or distributors. Frecciarossa tickets are sold through Trenitalia’s website, the Trenitalia France app, ticket offices and self-service machines.

Boarding at Gare de Lyon

With your ticket chosen, set off from Place de la Bastille for Gare de Lyon. Allow time inside the station as well as for the walk to find your platform and pass boarding controls.

For an early start on Friday, 2 October 2026, the first departures are OUIGO at 06:03 and TGV INOUI at 06:38.

For TGV INOUI and Frecciarossa, scan your ticket’s barcode at the platform boarding gates. A printed ticket or phone code works. Only ticket holders can pass. If the scanner fails, ask an agent to inspect the ticket and help you through. Staff may check it again on board.

For OUIGO, go to the marked boarding-control area and present your printed ticket or phone QR code. Staff may also request photo ID and proof of any reduction, so keep those with your ticket.

Saint-Charles to the Old Port

At Marseille Saint-Charles, whether you arrive by train or coach, take M1 towards La Fourragère to Vieux-Port without a change. From Vieux-Port station, walk to Quai des Belges at the Old Port, the waterfront endpoint of your journey.

From the main railway concourse at Saint-Charles, head to the back of the hall and follow the metro signs. Escalators or stairs lead down to the ticket hall, and there is also a lift. This station transfer needs time beyond the travelling subtotal.

An adult single-journey ticket costs €1.70, plus €0.10 on first purchase. Validate it at the validator when entering the metro. A single-journey ticket allows one metro entry. The first M1 departure towards Vieux-Port is at 05:10 throughout the week, including school holidays, summer and public holidays, subject to the exception below.

Rail distance and route

Between Gare de Lyon and Saint-Charles, the published passenger rail distance is 750 km, with the exact distance varying by the train’s route. This is a journey figure rather than a fixed length for one track alignment.

The high-speed route follows the Sud-Est high-speed line towards the Lyon area, then the Méditerranée high-speed line towards Marseille, finishing on conventional railway into Saint-Charles. A direct train can make intermediate station calls: you stay on board rather than changing trains. When choosing a departure, distinguish those calls from an itinerary that requires a connection.

A direct train from Nice-Ville is the simplest central departure for Marseille.
