Venice Access Fee: Status and 2026 Rules

You do not need to pay Venice’s access fee or register an exemption to visit on 3 October 2026. The most recent trial has ended. If you are staying overnight in Venice or Mestre, the separate accommodation tourist tax is still paid through your accommodation provider.

For a visit at the status date, you can go straight to planning your transport and sightseeing. The ended calendar does not carry over automatically into another year.

The trial applied only on the following dates, all in 2026. It was not a continuous charge throughout spring and summer, nor an all-day charge on the selected dates. For a past visit, start with the date: being in Venice during a month shown here was not enough to make the fee payable. The day had to fall within one of the listed ranges, and your entry into the charging area had to fall within the daily window.

  • April 2026: 3–6, 10–12, 17–19 and 24–30.
  • May 2026: 1–3, 8–10, 15–17, 22–24 and 29–31.
  • June 2026: 1–7, 12–14, 19–21 and 26–28.
  • July 2026: 3–5, 10–12, 17–19 and 24–26.

For a visit during that calendar, the next question was whether your destination and visitor category brought you within the trial. Staying overnight within the municipality, travelling solely to an excluded island and entering the historic centre for a day visit were treated differently.

Day visitors and arrival areas in 2026

  • Day visitors: leisure visitors entering the historic centre on charging dates and during charging hours had to register and pay unless an exclusion or exemption applied.
  • Children under 14: no payment or registration was required, and a valid identity document proved age at inspections.
  • Guests visiting resident friends or acquaintances: the resident generated and sent an invitation QR code using an accepted Italian digital identity. The guest exchanged it at an authorised VELA counter for a named paper voucher.
  • Wedding or celebration guests: a historic-city resident, or a resident family member, could issue the guest an invitation.
  • Overnight guests: accommodation within the Municipality of Venice qualified for the exemption explained below.

The trial covered Venice’s historic centre, including San Michele, San Giorgio Maggiore and Giudecca, but not the mainland. Mestre therefore lay outside the charging area.

Excluded lagoon islands were Lido, including Alberoni and Malamocco, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, Sant’Andrea, La Certosa, San Servolo, San Clemente, Poveglia, Sacca Sessola, San Francesco del Deserto, Lazzaretto Vecchio, Lazzaretto Nuovo and Isola degli Armeni.

Piazzale Roma is the road-transport terminal at the edge of the historic centre. Along with Santa Lucia railway station and Tronchetto, it had a transit-only exclusion: arrival there did not itself mean you owed the fee, but entering the historic centre ended that exclusion. Travelling onwards solely to excluded islands remained outside the charge.

Other excluded arrival areas included Ponte della Libertà, the directly connected Piazzale Roma area, San Basilio station, the Maritime Station and the area facing the large-cruise-ship landing stages at Riva degli Schiavoni. Changing ACTV waterbus piers without entering the historic centre did not incur the fee.

Visitors to the Venice Boat Show from 27–31 May 2026 were exempt with a named event ticket or exhibitor pass, plus identity evidence if requested. People summoned to public offices for justice-related reasons could use an exemption voucher or the prescribed self-declaration with identification.

Overnight stays and the tourist tax

Pay the accommodation tourist tax through your accommodation provider, which collects it from guests and passes it to the municipality. It is a charge on non-residents’ overnight stays, separate from the access fee for entering the historic city.

During the ended trial, hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and tourist-rental apartments within the Municipality of Venice qualified their guests for the overnight exemption. Mestre accommodation qualified too, but a booking outside the municipality did not. The exemption covered arrival through departure, inclusive, wherever those days coincided with the charging calendar.

The former procedure was to obtain a free exemption QR-code voucher. Your accommodation could issue it, or you could select “Request Exemption” on the official access-fee portal, enter the accommodation and booking details and add other guests. The accommodation name and stay dates established which stay the exemption covered.

Evidence for the ended trial

Do

  • Use a QR-code voucher issued by qualifying accommodation, or obtain one yourself using the accommodation and stay details.
  • Alternatively, complete the prescribed self-certification or statutory declaration stating the exemption, with an identity document attached.

Don’t

  • Treat payment of the accommodation tourist tax alone as the required exemption evidence.
  • Treat an overnight booking outside the Municipality of Venice as qualifying for the accommodation exemption.

The 2026 fees and payment voucher

2026 advance rate
€5 per person per access day
Advance cutoff
By the fourth-last day before the access date, inclusive
2026 later rate
€10 per person per access day
Later-payment period
The three days before access and the access day itself

These were the ended trial’s charges. The same-day voucher allowed repeat entries and exits.

The municipal service is the official Venice access-fee portal, cda.ve.it. Under the former process, registration and payment produced a voucher carrying both a QR code and a booking code. The QR voucher was the evidence to retain for inspection.

  • Download the voucher after registration.
  • Receive it at the email address used for registration.

The access charge did not include waterbus or other transport, museum entry, attraction tickets or other visitor services. For the rest of your trip, daily budgets for Venice separate accommodation, food and sightseeing allowances from this former entry charge.

Checks, penalties and official help

During the ended trial, authorised municipal staff could carry out checks at the city’s main access points. Visitors had to retain and show proof of payment or the evidence appropriate to their exclusion or exemption when requested.

The evidence depended on the category: a voucher, a prescribed declaration accompanied by identification, or status-specific proof. An exemption was not simply permission to arrive without the evidence attached to that category.

For questions about access-fee eligibility, registration or payment problems, call the Venice Access Fee Contact Centre on +39 041 041. You can also use the “Request information” enquiry channel on cda.ve.it, the municipal access-fee portal.
