Venice to Trento: Trains, Coaches and Arrival

From Venezia Santa Lucia to Piazza Duomo in Trento, choose trains via Verona Porta Nuova for less time travelling, or a direct coach from Tronchetto if its fare and departure suit you better. The train leaves from Venice’s historic centre, while the coach requires a separate journey to its boarding stop. Both options finish with a walk into central Trento, but from different arrival points.

Choose rail if you want to leave directly from Santa Lucia and arrive closer to the square. The faster-train calculation combines the two rail legs and the walk from Trento station. Your elapsed journey also depends on the connection you choose at Verona. A longer interchange can noticeably change the comparison.

Choose the coach when its actual ticket price and departure work better for you. The advertised fare is a starting price, not a fixed fare for every departure. Allow for waiting at the People Mover as well as reaching the coach stop before boarding.

Venezia Santa Lucia is the island-side station in historic Venice. Venezia Mestre is a different starting point on the mainland, so a departure labelled Mestre does not start at Santa Lucia or Tronchetto. Keep those names distinct when selecting your journey.

Trains via Verona Porta Nuova

From Venezia Santa Lucia, Trenitalia runs direct Regionale and faster Frecciarossa trains to Verona Porta Nuova, and Italo also serves this leg with high-speed trains. The Frecciarossa leg takes about an hour and a quarter. Italo offers seven daily departures on this Venice–Verona route, rather than seven departures across all operators.

At Verona Porta Nuova, change within the station for Trento. Trenitalia Regionale services use the Verona–Brenner line, and faster options include Frecciarossa and Italo. The Frecciarossa leg takes just under an hour, while Italo’s advertised onward journey takes 54 minutes. The onward Italo service count in the comparison is specific to that operator, not the whole Verona–Trento railway.

Select the two departures as a connected journey, not as unrelated train rides. Allow yourself room to find the onward platform with your luggage. At Verona, match the train number on your ticket to the departure display: a train continuing beyond Trento may show a more distant destination. Remain at Porta Nuova for the interchange. There is no transfer to another Verona station.

  • Trenitalia Regional Digital Ticket (BDR): use “Check-in” in “My Trips” from 00:00 on the travel day and before your selected train departs. It is valid only for the train or trains checked in.
  • Paper regional ticket: validate it before departure at the station where your journey begins.
  • Regional electronic ticket (BER): no validation is needed unless the specific regional fare rules require it.

Follow the rule for your regional ticket type before boarding. A phone display alone is not the check-in action for a BDR. For the faster services, use the train and reservation details on your ticket rather than treating them as an interchangeable regional departure. Once you reach Trento station, the remaining journey to Piazza Duomo is on foot.

Coaches from Tronchetto

For the coach option, set off from Venezia Santa Lucia towards Piazzale Roma, then use the People Mover to Tronchetto. FlixBus runs direct coaches from Venezia Tronchetto to Trento’s Lungadige San Nicolò stop. Departures depend on your travel date. The coach does not leave from the railway station.

  • Santa Lucia to Piazzale Roma People Mover station: walk about 500 metres, about 7 minutes, crossing the Constitution Bridge.
  • Piazzale Roma to Tronchetto People Mover station: ride about 1.2 km, about 8 minutes.
  • Tronchetto People Mover station to the coach stop: walk about 300 metres, about 4 minutes.

The People Mover is a separate AVM/ACTV access service, with departures every 10 minutes. Its ticket is valid only on the People Mover, not on the coach. With luggage, leave room for the bridge crossing, buying the access ticket and finding the correct boarding area, because the walking and riding components alone do not include that time.

Use the Tronchetto address on your coach ticket to locate the boarding stop. Piazzale Roma is where you board the People Mover, not where you board this FlixBus service. Keep the coach departure and the access service’s operating window together when choosing a late journey.

From the arrival stop to Piazza Duomo

After the rail journey, Trento station brings you to Piazza Dante. From there, Piazza Duomo is about 600 metres away, about 8 minutes on foot. Rail leaves you with the shorter final walk, useful if you have luggage or want to head straight into the historic centre.

After the direct coach, you arrive at Lungadige San Nicolò, by the River Adige. Walk towards Piazza Duomo from this river-side stop: the route is about 1.1 km, about 16 minutes. The square, with Trento Cathedral and the Fountain of Neptune, is the same destination used for the rail comparison.

Alight at the stop named on your ticket. Trento FS or Via Pozzo is a different arrival point from Lungadige San Nicolò, so do not apply the river-side walk to those tickets. For a late arrival with accommodation beyond the centre, arrange your onward journey and accommodation arrival together.
