Verona to Trento: Choosing a Train or Coach

From Piazza Bra in Verona, you can reach Piazza Duomo in Trento by direct train or FlixBus coach, with a walk at each end. Rail gives you a shorter walk to boarding and a consistent arrival at Trento railway station. A coach can suit a lower available fare or a more convenient departure, but its named arrival stop matters, and the Verona boarding point is temporarily relocated this October.

Choose rail if carrying your bags farther to the Verona coach stop would be awkward. Both options still require you to carry luggage from your arrival point to Piazza Duomo. Choose the coach when the fare actually available and its departure suit you better, not simply because its advertised starting price is lower.

The faster rail estimate combines the two walks with a direct Frecciarossa journey, rather than a stopping regional train. Allow extra time inside Porta Nuova to find your platform. The coach estimate combines the access walk, a minimum scheduled ride of 1 hour 10 minutes and the Via Pozzo final walk with the boarding allowance. Add any further waiting for your chosen departure, and choose a coach arriving at Via Pozzo to follow this journey.

Getting to Porta Nuova

From Piazza Bra, the walk to Verona Porta Nuova railway station is about 1.5 km and takes about 22 minutes. This is the departure station for the direct trains towards Trento. The intercity coach stop is a separate boarding point, not the railway entrance or the urban bus bays.

Use the eastern entrance and underpass for step-free access to the platforms. There is a lift to each platform, including those used by high-speed trains. The western underpass has stairs only. Follow the signs for the eastern passage and your platform lift, leaving time to reach it before boarding.

The walk from Piazza Bra to the alternative Viale Andrea Palladio coach stop is about 1.9 km and takes about 28 minutes. With a suitcase, allow extra walking time rather than using the whole walk as your margin before departure. Head to the roadside boarding location, not into Porta Nuova station.

Regional and faster trains

At Verona Porta Nuova, direct regional trains take you to Trento without a change. Trenitalia sells regional services, while Italo sells high-speed trains on this route. The faster direct Frecciarossa leg covers about 92 km in just under an hour. The first rail departure towards Trento is at 05:20 daily.

Regional trains stop more often. The 2026 regional service programme includes these direct journeys from Verona Porta Nuova to Trento:

  • Departure 14:06, arrival 15:30.
  • Departure 18:06, arrival 19:30.

Validate a paper regional ticket at Porta Nuova before departure, using a station ticket validator. It remains valid until 23:59 on its printed date. Do this before heading to the platform so that finding your train does not leave you with an unvalidated ticket.

A Digital Regional Ticket needs no check-in: it validates automatically at the selected train’s scheduled departure. You can change it until that departure time. It is valid only for the validated train or trains, until scheduled arrival, with completion of the journey allowed if delayed. Show the ticket’s dynamic green bar together with valid ID when inspected.

For a train with compulsory seat reservations, travel only on the train printed on your ticket. Missing it does not give you permission to take a later departure. Any change depends on your ticket’s conditions. This matters if you are choosing between the regional service and a reserved-seat faster train.

On Trenitalia regional trains, hand luggage travels free in designated spaces, provided it contains no malodorous, harmful or dangerous substances. Stow it without obstructing people or railway staff, or causing damage.

On Trenitalia national services, including Frecciarossa, luggage and other easily carried items are free if they fit the space ordinarily available to you. Larger items are permitted only if they do not inconvenience or harm other passengers, obstruct staff or damage carriages. You remain responsible for your luggage, so keep it securely stowed and take all your bags with you at Trento.

Coach tickets and stops

At the Verona coach stop, you board a direct FlixBus service to Trento. Choose a departure by its named arrival stop as well as its time: Autostazione Via Pozzo, Stazione FS and Lungadige San Nicolò are distinct destinations within Trento, not interchangeable labels for one stop.

Present a printed or electronic ticket to board. Carrying valid government-issued photo ID is also recommended for this domestic journey. Have your ticket ready at the roadside stop rather than expecting to collect a boarding document inside the railway station.

Your standard ticket includes one carry-on bag up to 7 kg and one checked bag up to 20 kg at no extra cost. Additional luggage can be added for a fee. You still need to manage those bags on both access walks, even though the checked bag travels in the coach’s luggage hold.

The first advertised departure is 00:05, with availability dependent on the travel date. A departure shortly after midnight belongs to the new calendar day: for travel after a late evening in Verona, select the following date rather than the date on which your evening began.

From your arrival stop to Piazza Duomo

After the journey from Verona, direct mainline trains arrive at Trento railway station, on Piazza Dante. From there, Piazza Duomo is about 600 metres away, a walk of about 8 minutes.

FlixBus also lists Stazione FS at Piazza Dante, 9, and Autostazione Via Pozzo on Via Andrea Pozzo, coach bay 15. Both are in the station area: head towards the historic centre and Piazza Duomo. From Via Pozzo, the final walk is about 550 metres and takes about 8 minutes. Your ticket’s named stop determines where you get off.

Lungadige San Nicolò is a separate coach arrival stop, also listed for journeys from Verona. Choose it deliberately rather than treating it as another name for the station-area stops, and plan your approach to Piazza Duomo from that stop rather than from Via Pozzo.
