Vienna itinerary: one, two or three days

Vienna’s imperial rooms and art collections reward separate mornings. Start with St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Hofburg, spend another day at Schönbrunn, then give Bruegel and Klimt their own day. Three full sightseeing days let you see all three without sacrificing lunch, an accommodation rest or dinner. A shorter stay means choosing between palaces and paintings.

Hofburg and Schönbrunn timed tickets, then Upper Belvedere

Three days is not too much: the Hofburg, Schönbrunn and the two art collections each earn a substantial visit. Keep arrival and departure separate from full sightseeing days.

Herrengasse puts you within walking reach of the Hofburg entrance. Neubau has U2 and U3 access at Volkstheater: take U3 to Herrengasse, then walk past the Hofburg to the cathedral for the first morning.

Lunch usually falls around 12:00–14:00; dinner around 18:00–21:00, with tables busiest around 19:00–20:00. For five days in Vienna, separate the major collections onto different mornings and add a wine-tavern outing.

Individual tickets suit these full interiors and fixed palace appointments. Buy the Hofburg and Schönbrunn slots first, then fit Upper Belvedere around the museum morning. At the Hofburg, only a booked online ticket guarantees admission. The selected ticket excludes the closed Silver Collection.

Schönbrunn’s Palace Ticket includes Franz Joseph and Elisabeth’s private apartments, the state rooms and Maria Theresa’s private chambers, with an audio guide or printed description. The Kunsthistorisches Museum visit is to the permanent collections, not a separately timed exhibition.

The three-day Vienna Pass costs €157.50 at the special price, or €175 regularly. It runs for three consecutive calendar days, midnight to midnight, so first use late in the day still consumes that day. These selected single tickets cost less and include the fuller Schönbrunn visit.

  • Hofburg: pass admission covers the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments. Reserve admission in advance, without priority entry.
  • Kunsthistorisches Museum: present the pass at the entrance for fast-track admission.
  • Upper Belvedere: one admission is included. Go directly to the exhibition entrance with the pass and valid ID, without a time-slot ticket. Peak-time delays remain possible.

St Stephen’s Gothic carving, Hofburg court rooms and Graben’s cafés make this a varied centre walk, ending beside the Danube Canal and over dinner in Servitenviertel. The linked walks cover about 6.7 km, so wear comfortable shoes.

St Stephen’s Cathedral’s intricately carved Gothic pulpit rewards close attention. Ordinary entry and the paid sightseeing area are separate. Sightseeing runs Monday–Saturday 09:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:30, but only in the afternoon on Sundays and public holidays: move this visit after lunch then. Services take precedence. Wear modest clothing and keep quiet.

After Freyung lunch, the Rathaus’s tower carries the armoured Rathausmann figure. Volksgarten’s neoclassical Theseus Temple leads into MuseumsQuartier’s freely accessible courtyards, with cafés including MQdaily. In rain or heat, shorten the garden and spend longer in a café before your accommodation rest.

  • Volksgarten gates: 07:00–17:30 from 1 November to 28 February.
  • March: 07:00–19:00.
  • April–October: 06:00–22:00.

Resume at Schwedenplatz’s waterside promenade, then head to Servitenviertel’s restaurants. Wiener Schnitzel is veal, thinly beaten, breaded and fried. A pork version is usually labelled separately.

Schönbrunn’s Millions Room combines rosewood panelling with miniature paintings. The palace opens daily, including public holidays: 08:30–17:30 from 1 September to 2 November 2026, then 08:30–17:00 from 3 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. The optional Gloriette climb gives views over the palace towards Vienna without terrace admission. Morning light suits this outward view. Gravel paths and exposed ground call for walking shoes and sun or rain protection, and stay around the flatter Great Parterre if you want to avoid the climb. In poor weather, shorten the gardens.

  • Schönbrunn park gates open daily at 06:30.
  • Closing: 17:30 November–February; 19:00 March and October; 20:00 April, August and September; 21:00 May–July.

After Hietzing lunch, U4 returns you to Naschmarkt’s Turkish, Middle Eastern and Asian stalls, produce, cheeses and olives. Stalls may open 06:00–21:00 Monday–Friday and 06:00–18:00 Saturday, but all must open Tuesday–Friday 15:00–18:00.

The State Opera’s loggia and sculptures precede Burggarten’s Mozart Monument and treble-clef flowerbed. Burggarten opens 07:00–19:00 in March, 06:00–22:00 April–October and from 07:00 in winter. After resting, resume at Karlsplatz for Karlskirche’s turquoise-green dome, but bring this pause earlier on short winter days. Freihausviertel has restaurants, cafés and bars around Schleifmühlgasse.

At the Kunsthistorisches Museum, pair Bruegel’s crowded Tower of Babel with Cellini’s ornate gold salt cellar, the Saliera, in the Kunstkammer collection of precious objects. This gives you a focus rather than a race through every gallery.

Outside, the Maria Theresa monument’s surrounding advisers and generals warrant the optional pause. Spittelberg’s cobbled lanes and small Biedermeier houses lead to Neubau lunch, then take tram D towards Upper Belvedere.

Upper Belvedere’s collection includes Klimt’s The Kiss within your selected admission. It opens daily 09:00–18:00. Afterwards, the optional terraced gardens offer fountains, sculptures and views between the two palaces. Afternoon light suits the broader city view from the upper grounds.

Two collections mean prolonged standing as well as walking. Choose just one if that feels tiring, and keep the indoor visits while shortening the gardens in poor weather. After resting, resume at Stadtpark’s gilded Johann Strauss monument before Landstrasser Hauptstrasse’s mix of Viennese and international restaurants.

One day, two days or a partial stay

  • One day: keep the cathedral and Hofburg core, but lose Schönbrunn and both art collections.
  • Two days: follow Days 1–2. For Klimt, replace the market afternoon with Upper Belvedere, not an extra stop.
  • Late arrival: keep Servitenviertel dinner or the Karlsplatz evening pause.
  • Early departure: keep the cathedral and Hofburg morning, or Schönbrunn. Retain the Kunsthistorisches Museum only if you can leave after its visit. Drop later commitments.
  • Less walking: remove optional churches, exterior detours, the Gloriette climb and Belvedere gardens first, and lengthen accommodation rests.

For an art-first alternative, one day in Vienna with Klimt makes Upper Belvedere the main paid interior instead of the Hofburg.
