A Weekend in Berlin: Two Days and an Arrival Evening

The Reichstag’s glass dome, Nefertiti at the Neues Museum and the painted Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery give this weekend three very different ways into the city’s history. Between them, you have time for a park walk, riverside pauses and dinner in Mitte and Kreuzberg.

A Friedrichstraße base keeps the central sights within walking reach. Return to your accommodation each afternoon and use the S-Bahn and U-Bahn for the longer eastern crossings.

Berlin works well for a first weekend if you group the sights rather than cross the city repeatedly. The central history stops form Saturday’s walk, while Museum Island and the Wall shape Sunday. A Sunday flight means dropping part of the second afternoon and its Kreuzberg evening, not trying to squeeze the same visits into less time.

Choose accommodation in the central part of Mitte around Friedrichstraße, between the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island. Friedrichstraße station’s east–west S-Bahn services support the eastern sightseeing trip, while the U6 serves Unter den Linden, Stadtmitte and Kochstraße for Checkpoint Charlie. You can walk to much of the central cluster and still have useful rail connections nearby.

Bring comfortable shoes, weather layers and drinking water: the outdoor stretches are sustained, even with breaks. Rain makes the planned interiors more valuable. In heat, keep the accommodation rests. On short winter days, move the riverside pauses earlier and shorten the outdoor evening.

If evening light art is the reason for choosing an autumn weekend, the Berlin Festival of Lights helps you decide between keeping these daytime visits and giving more of the trip to the festival.

Request the Reichstag slot before arranging the rest of your morning. Apply online, by fax or by post, giving every visitor’s first name, surname and date of birth. Telephone registration is not possible. Keep the confirmed appointment as Saturday’s fixed commitment.

Spontaneous registration at the visitor service office is a separate, availability-dependent option. Visitors aged 16 and over need an original valid official photo ID, while those aged 14–15 should bring an identity document with their name and photograph, such as a student ID or passport. Copies are not accepted, and identity is checked again at entry.

For the Neues Museum’s regular collections, the day ticket works throughout opening hours. Online purchase is convenient, but you can also buy at the counter. Major special exhibitions may have separate tickets or time slots; the scheduled visit concentrates on the permanent collections.

The WelcomeCard is a separate transport choice, not a substitute for the museum ticket above. Choose its airport-inclusive version for the Friday-to-Monday stay, because the city-only AB version does not cover BER.

Friday arrival and dinner in Mitte

From a UK flight into Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), follow the arrivals signs downstairs to BER Terminal 1–2 railway station. The S9 takes you directly to Friedrichstraße without changing trains. Alternatively, take the FEX to Hauptbahnhof and an onward S-Bahn to Friedrichstraße: that station-to-station connection takes about 31 minutes.

The FEX operates nearly around the clock, with departures every 15 minutes from 04:00 to 01:00. If you have not chosen the airport-inclusive WelcomeCard, buy a Berlin ABC single ticket: the adult fare is €5, valid for 120 minutes in one direction, with no return or round trip permitted.

Settle into your accommodation before dinner around Friedrichstraße, keeping the arrival evening close to your Mitte base. Berlin lunch is commonly around 12:00–14:00 and dinner around 18:00–20:00, though many restaurants serve later. The sightseeing days leave room for a seated meal rather than eating between monuments.

For Saturday’s Reichstag approach, the walk from Friedrichstraße station is about 900 metres and takes about 12 minutes. Leave extra time for reaching the station from your accommodation and the entry formalities, rather than arriving at the appointment straight from the walk.

From your Friedrichstraße base, the Reichstag dome, Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden lead through a history-heavy day, softened by Tiergarten paths and a Spree pause before dinner around Oranienburger Straße.

The Reichstag’s mirrored cone and spiral ramps open views over Berlin and down into the parliamentary chamber. Lifts from the west portal reach the roof terrace, with ramp access to the dome. Keep the morning appointment. A slower visit or security delays mean trimming optional stops later.

Brandenburg Gate’s Doric columns frame its passageways beneath the Quadriga, a four-horse chariot driven by Victoria. View it from Pariser Platz before continuing south.

At the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, concrete stelae rise across undulating ground. Cross slowly and quietly on foot, and do not climb or jump between the stelae. Marked paths suit wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility. The outdoor field is accessible year-round, around the clock.

Topography of Terror occupies the former Gestapo and SS headquarters site. Its permanent exhibition traces institutions and perpetrators, while excavated cellars and outdoor displays connect the account to the ground beneath you. It opens daily, 10:00–20:00. Optional Checkpoint Charlie adds the replica border booth and street-side information without another museum visit.

After lunch around Potsdamer Platz, keep the Tiergarten walk to tree-lined paths and the Rousseau Island area with its small lake and monument. Return to your accommodation before setting out along Unter den Linden. At Bebelplatz, the optional Sunken Library commemorates the Nazi book burning of 10 May 1933.

Monbijou Park’s public Spree promenade and green spaces make a gentler finish. Longer daylight suits this riverside pause. In winter, move it earlier, and shorten the outdoor evening in persistent rain. Around Oranienburger Straße, try currywurst, sausage with curry-spiced tomato sauce, or a seasonal main meal. Vegetarian choices offer an alternative.

After Saturday’s central history and Mitte dinner, start again from your Friedrichstraße base: Nefertiti at the Neues Museum, Hackesche Höfe’s courtyards and the East Side Gallery’s murals make a varied day, ending beside the Landwehr Canal and over dinner in Bergmannkiez. If shifting this day to Monday, visit the Neues Museum on another day: it is closed on Mondays.

The Neues Museum combines Nefertiti and the Egyptian collections with David Chipperfield’s restoration, where surviving nineteenth-century rooms meet modern interventions and traces of wartime damage. Include the prehistoric and early-history galleries rather than rushing away after the bust. The principal entrance is wheelchair accessible. Sunday opening is 10:00–18:00.

The optional Hackesche Höfe courtyards add Art Nouveau architecture, especially the colourful glazed-brick façade of the first courtyard. The public courtyards open daily, 07:00–23:00, while individual businesses have separate hours. Lunch at neighbouring Hackescher Markt precedes your accommodation rest.

For the East Side Gallery, set out again via Hackescher Markt and take an eastbound S-Bahn, such as the S7, to Ostbahnhof, then walk to the Wall. Find Dmitri Vrubel’s Brezhnev–Honecker kiss, Birgit Kinder’s Trabant breaking through the Wall and Thierry Noir’s brightly coloured figures. The public promenade is free and open around the clock.

Oberbaum Bridge earns its optional pause through red-brick towers and pointed arches. Continue via Schlesisches Tor, taking the U3 to Kottbusser Tor for the walk around Oranienplatz. In rain, keep the museum and drop the courtyard and bridge detours first, followed by the neighbourhood walk.

Around Admiral Bridge, the Landwehr Canal’s public banks and promenades give you space to linger. Warm evenings with daylight left suit the pause best, but keep noise low around nearby homes. Finish in Bergmannkiez, whose casual cafés and international restaurants sit alongside German eateries, with Turkish-influenced and vegetarian meals among the choices.

Departure and the shorter version

  1. For a Sunday flight, remove the Oranienplatz neighbourhood walk, Admiral Bridge canal pause and Bergmannkiez dinner first.
  2. If departure leaves only Sunday morning, keep the Neues Museum and drop the East Side Gallery and Oberbaum Bridge too.
  3. For a late Saturday start, remove Checkpoint Charlie and Bebelplatz, then the Tiergarten walk, before shortening the main visits. Preserve the confirmed Reichstag appointment.

After Sunday’s Bergmannkiez dinner, a Monday departure lets you keep both evenings. From the Friedrichstraße base, take the S9 directly to BER Terminal 1–2. It runs every 20 minutes. An alternative is the S5 to Ostkreuz, changing to the RB24 for BER: that station-to-station connection takes about 37 minutes.
