Austin Wine Bars for a Glass and Something to Eat

Austin’s wine bars offer quite different reasons to settle in with a glass. House Wine pairs flights with cheese in Bouldin, while Flo’s makes pizza the centre of a Tarrytown outing. In East Austin, Cape Bottle Room specialises in South African wine, LoLo focuses on natural wine, and Small’s offers an Italian-oriented bar tucked behind a pizza storefront.

Choose Flo’s if you want pizza to anchor the visit, or one of the other four for wine with a lighter bite. Pick one place that suits your appetite and wine interests rather than treating these scattered locations as a bar crawl.

Estimated spending before sales tax and tip, with boards or pizza shared between two people.

Sharing keeps the food portion of the bill down, while ordering a whole plate for yourself or choosing premium pours pushes spending upwards. US menu prices generally exclude sales tax. For table service, allow roughly 18–20% of the pre-tax bill for a tip.

For a flexible walk-in, be willing to take either indoor or outdoor seats. If your group needs to sit together, arrange seating with the venue beforehand and say whether you want indoors or a patio. Describe the wine you enjoy to staff, such as crisp and dry or fuller-bodied, rather than choosing by grape name alone.

House Wine

House Wine is the choice for comparing wines through a flight. Set in a house on South First Street in Bouldin, it suits a tasting-led visit with a cheese plate to share. The cheese is a snack alongside the wine rather than a full dinner, so plan a separate meal if you arrive hungry.

Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand: $12

Flight themes include Fresh and Lively Whites, Obscure & Interesting Reds and Sparkling Celebration. Choose a theme to explore related wines side by side, or take the sauvignon blanc if you would rather settle on a single glass.

Inside, small rooms have chairs and tables rather than one large dining space. Outside, you can choose the patio or quieter shaded seating. The modestly priced setting works especially well when the point of the visit is trying wine and talking over cheese.

Flo’s Wine Bar and Bottle Shop

Flo’s Wine Bar and Bottle Shop suits a wine-and-pizza outing in Tarrytown. On West 35th Street, its rotating glass pours accompany Allday Pizza. Order the Pep & Pepp Pie, topped with pepperoni and pepperoncini, the tangy peppers that offset the richness of the meat.

Order and pay for pizza at the outdoor window, take your buzzer and find a seat. Wine comes through Flo’s table service, so the two orders are handled separately. Leave room for the pizza queue and for finding a table rather than expecting a single seated ordering process.

Flo’s and Allday Pizza share the indoor space and covered patio. Inside, choose among bar seats, window-facing seats and banquettes. The range of seating makes this a mid-priced option for lingering over a shared pie rather than just collecting takeaway.

On Friday and Saturday, pizza is served from 11am–10pm, and on Sunday from 11am–9pm. Those windows coincide with wine service, making a weekend lunch as workable as an evening visit.

Cape Bottle Room

Cape Bottle Room makes South African wine the focus of your visit. The wine room on San Marcos Street in East Austin is a good choice when you want to explore that country’s wines rather than work through a geographically broad list.

Order the biltong board, a charcuterie-style snack built around South African air-dried meat. Share it over a glass rather than treating it as dinner. Biltong brings a savoury accompaniment to the tasting, and the board lets you eat a little while keeping the wine at the centre of the visit.

You can sit at the bar or take a table in the minimalist room. This is a mid-priced seated wine stop, with a straightforward choice between the counter and a table for your conversation. Weekend service starts earlier than weekday service, so it also suits an afternoon glass.

LoLo Natural Wine Bar

LoLo is the natural-wine choice on East Sixth Street. The East Austin bar and shop suits a glass with something simple to nibble rather than a food-led evening.

Order the baguette with butter for a light snack. Bread and butter give you something to share without turning the visit into a substantial meal, so eat dinner separately if that is what your evening needs.

Inside, LoLo has bar and table seating. The covered back patio has picnic tables, giving you a different setting for sitting together over wine. Weekend opening at lunchtime makes an afternoon visit possible, while weekday service begins later. Expect a mid-priced outing rather than a bargain tasting.

Small’s Wine Bar

Small’s Wine Bar pairs an Italian-oriented wine selection with a back-room setting at Springdale General. Order eggplant dip (aubergine dip) with sesame focaccia as a shared snack alongside your glass. The bread-and-dip pairing suits a lighter wine outing rather than a full meal.

To find the bar, go to Building 1 and follow the back hallway behind the Small’s Pizza storefront. The wine bar is tucked away there, so do not stop at the pizza counter assuming you have reached the room. It is a mid-priced choice for a seated drink and a bite.
